Right Shoulder To The Ball

I'm a little confused about this. In the Chuck Cook video on another thread he stressed the importance og the thought of getting the right shoulder to the ball. I've read Monte saying the same in the past. Is this a plane issue or a power move?

To me, if you do it right then it allows one to keep their trail arm bent and extend it through impact versus lose the angle early in order to reach the ball. It's how you get a bent right arm at impact which has to do with swing radius I believe.

I remember Monte saying it was the #1 thing he was thinking about before a long drive competition a few years back. Does it provide speed in itself or does it just allow the right arm thrust to happen at the right time?

Depends on the swing pattern. Some that try to get chest rotation and the right shoulder thru the ball may be barking up the wrong tree given their swing.

I think it's more of a feel thing. Had a very good older player tell me years ago feel like the right shoulder "covers the ball" on the downswing.

Use Side Bend. It gets you closer to the ball

I think this also helps people who "crash" their right shoulder into their side and don't rotate their shoulders through. Monte has talked about this a lot, Watson has that video at the clinic, etc.

I've only recently "discovered" the importance of this, the fact that the shoulder can really only get in the right spot(s) by pivoting properly too, that this action done properly is NOT an over-the-top move, etc.

And there you go. That's why people are so deathly afraid of doing something like right shoulder out to the ball.

Helps to retract scapula muscle by top or transition and hold its release till impact. Right bend to get shoulder below and meeting head is also a factor. Finding the act of left shoulder/arm "throwing a frisbee" helps facilitate getting under down plane and executing right shoulder to ball thing better. Getting the two working together is sweet hitting.

It's really good advice and something I'm working on. Everyone has a different way they need to move their right shoulder to the ball, though. For slicers, it's more down and then out. For people like me who slide and hit pushes and hooks, I have to feel more "out," with my lead shoulder feeling low and moving to the right (I'm a lefty) as my transition.

 

Additionally, moving your trail shoulder (or more specifically, your humerus) through the ball is essential for chipping and pitching.

Instead of getting the right shoulder to the ball, find the optimal way to get the club head to the ball.

Keep in mind that your shoulders naturally want to rotate at the same angle as your hips. The only way you can get them to turn steeper than your hips, is to add side bend of the thoracic spine.

Rotating the shoulders properly has been something I've worked on the last few years.VERY difficult to do when hitting a ball.I could go on and on as to why but the bottom line is that it is tough to do with a club in your hand while hitting a ball at full speed.

Everyone is different on these feel things. Seriously. At best a feel might work for 20% of folks.

Try to get the shoulder to the ball before the club. You may then understand what handle dragging is.

Today: Practiced more shoulder turn on the backswing, and then focused on keeping my right shoulder down and through instead of up and out. The results: higher flight on the ball, better compression at impact,  eliminated hitting the ball thin on the bottom grooves. We’ll see what happens on the course ⛳️this Monday.  Mike M.
