Interesting Find: Callaway Proto Irons

Found these at the local golf shop. Some guy had the shop order these from Callaway "several years" ago. They had to contact a certain person at Callaway to place the order. They are shafted with Rifle 5.0. Apparently they have become too challenging to play anymore so the guy is selling them. They look like they have been hit very little. Any ideas for what irons these were the proto for?

Owned these for a long time, excellent irons. They sold this set through retail channels not a “prototype” in its transitional sense. BB

Check that. Wrong lookup. MB1s were 2015 I think. Thanks for the info, BTW.

I thought this was a pretty common iron. They sold a lot of these sets, not really a prototype. It was the model before the Razor X muscleback.

It was interesting Cally did essentially a mass production of the "proto's" I had several sets, they also had the v groove and heavy head configurations as well. The Razr MB's are the same profile as well.

These are the precursor to the RAZR MB. Not sure what years they were available but they were available to order through any Cally retailer and in some stores (Golf Galaxy had a set)

it was callaway prototype, MB1 and then Razr X MB's. All pretty much the same I believe? I have a demo 6 iron at home of the Razr X mb that I practice swinging with all the time in my house. It's got a flighted 5.5 project x and is too weak for me. Looks like these have a pretty weak shaft as well. What are they asking for them?

I have the same except shafted with KBS Limited black 130X shafts. Excellent condition on da bay sitting for months under that price.

IMHO, $275 - $325.00 would be a good price.

The set the OP posted appears mint I think that’s a pretty legit value for a nice set of MB’s.

These might have been refinished. I’ve had a set of these since new. They are matte finish. Never seen a polished set before. Great find in that condition at $400 IMO.

Quick update: these are Prototype-R irons. Just looked at the photos more carefully and found the "R" stamping on the hosel. That dates them to 2010. Remarkably good condition for 8 - 9 year old irons.

Had a set years ago, very nice irons. If I ever get around to making a Cally bag, these might just be the set I end up with.

Yea, my razr x mb has an R as well, means regular heads as in weight. There are H heads as well, for heavy. Those prototypes are pretty old though. I took that 6 iron out a few days ago and reminded me how nice that blade style is. Callaway is supposedly testing a new blade to be released soon, hopefully comes back to this design again

Have a set of razr mb. Project x flighted 5.5

100% mint, only took one of the clubs out of its original plastic.

Never hit a single ball.

Just don’t have the game for them and probably never will....probably should sell em.

It is a very Easy to hit blade. Great feel, control and they look great.

 

See if they’ll take $350 for em. Great sticks!

Wow, those are in pretty sweet condition for the age of them [2010?] I have a set with PX 5.5 ..R.. Endo forged if I recall correctly. One of the best looking set irons Callaway has ever made in my opinion. Someone will be very happy to get them.

I am reluctant to play non-conforming grooves. Unlikely I will ever play in a tournament that adheres to the groove rule, but possible. These also have a little higher VCoG than I like which may be another way of saying I am not good enough to play them. Plus I would destroy them on this south TX hardpan down here. Saw them on Saturday. They might already be gone. There was a guy caressing them as we left.

Callaway did make some of these with conforming grooves, but they are hard to find. They have a different hosel stamping, but I'm not exactly sure what it is. Think it was a "V".

They're great irons, going from memory they're supposed to be Endo-forged, and yes, the prototypes for the RAZR MB.

What I'd like to know is if the MB-1s are in any way different from the RAZR 1s.

I still own a set of these, they are a great set of clubs, truly love the feel...working with Ping now, so I take them out once in a while, great clubs though.

I still have a lefty set of these from 2009-2010. Best irons I've ever hit and had every one of my aces with them. Didn't know that some of the grooves were non-conforming. I should check out the hosels. You should buy them just for the pure pleasure of striking some of the best made Endo forged irons.

Definitely the softest feel Callaway iron Ive ever hit. Will probably never sell my set. Solid distances on them for their lofts also.
