Tour Velvet-Why do so many pros play them?

More or less this. Not all high calibre players are like Phil where you can basically interchange things on a whim and still play well. Creatures of habit more than anything.

I think it is just that perfect combo of familiarity, great feel, availability, and predictability. There is also the consideration to be made for varying shaft butt diameters which are less of a size issue with softer grips like the TV and a bigger issue with firmer grips like the NDMC.

And it is a grip that doesn't stand out. I think that if you're not getting payed to play then you take something discreet maybe?

I tried the MCC and MCC +4 this year and really don't like the different compounds and the fact they aren't a full cord grip.

 

Tour velvet and tour velvet cord are awesome no nonsense grips, with no directional or asymmetrical designs in the grip. When addressing the ball I like to just focus on gripping the club with a square face vs. the grip having some alignment aid or pattern that could throw off my eye thinking it isn't square.

Great the first couple months then not so great. I play a ton but cant afford new grips a couple times a year. I also found that they were very hard on my hands and forearms. so I went to a different grip.

This is why PGA pros play them. No worries about lasting a couple of months even, just get them replaced.

I use them because they don't hurt my hands at all, which some of the rougher grips can do. Next time I will try the Crossline I think now that I am able to buy them in black.

i've used TV's for lord knows how long. they're cheap, tacky, and compared to other grips are a bit more supple and take to more wraps of tape underneath if you want to experiment. recently put the TV+4's on my wedges and have to say, i might just move to those next season - they are pretty awesome and i build up my regular grips the same way anyway.

I totally disagree with easy on the hands, Golf Prides rubber irritates the hell out of my hands. While Lamkin's compounds don't bother them at all.

Just scrub your grips with soap and water and a wash cloth after every round or two and they will last plenty long, even Tour Velvets. I have no problem getting a season or two out of them. Before I started cleaning my clubs frequently, the TV would get slick pretty quickly. But when you take proper care of them they last a while.

I wonder how hard you guys are on your grips. I clean mine a few times a year and I still don’t need to change them out. They are not slick at all. I have close to 200 rounds on my tv’s

they last a lot longer then just a few months.. wire brush scrub the grips with dishwashing soap, water, rinse, and wipe after every round. close to new for at least 50 rounds! ,

 

the wire on your brush are not for clubs.

The only grip that doesn't see out a season is the 58*, but that gets a lot of use, otherwise they're good for a year and I play a lot of golf.

One of the all time classic grip designs. For me, they were the first grips I ever played. Many companies have had them as their standard grips of choice for years. Good in all conditions. Will last if taken care of. Love the newer align version.
