Wilson Staff Blades - First Impressions

I’ve had some time with mine now and can truly say they are fantastic irons. The feel/sound and performance is exceptional. Not a steel shaft player any longer so the re-build is currently underway. First observation the bore thru design is purely cosmetic they are taper tips. I’m relieved to say the shafts pulled very easily with low heat and without damaging the sole pin plugs what so ever. First huddle successfully navigated! Waiting on a set of Fujikura Pro IP 95i shafts to be delivered. I’m really excited about this setup and they should be in the bag for a while. BB

So the plugs are for looks alone, or am I missing something?

It's correct to say that the Staff blades are not a true full bore through design.  Wilson has partially bored the bottom 3/4" of the hosel.  The shaft seats on the outer ridge of the "inner" bore.

Wilson has removed weight from the hosel; the plug is there to fill the void.

But, there are no issues in changing shafts.

Well that is odd... I got my Wilson Staff blades today and had a go in the simulator...

These actually feel lighter to me than my P790's with a KBS 90 shaft.

The Wilsons have the S300 Dynamic Gold shaft which is heavier.

For some reason the Wilson's seem to suit my swing, so that they feel light , except I can really sense where the club head is.

I was expecting to be all over the place, but I was more consistent striking the blades than I was the P790's and I only lost 2-3 yards, with a lot higher spin numbers.

7 iron carry of 155 consistently, remarkably so.

9 iron 132 carry again consistent

PW 120 carry

I also tried 3 swings with the butter knife 3 iron... all good strikes, but 2 pushes and one dead straight.

190 carry on the straight and 185 on the pushes.

Obviously i am not a long hitter, but I was expecting a much bigger fall off - loft to loft the Wilsons hit it  LONGER than my P790s - and I was NOT expecting that.

It's remarkable how easy these blades are to hit.  Not sure if was just swinging it well today. Will keep testing but these blades might be going in my bag a lot sooner than I expected.

It seems a little weird but I often find clubs with heavier shafts feel lighter in the heads than the ones with lighter shafts, even though the total weight is higher. I don’t know why but it could be because the heavier shaft has a higher percentage of the total build weight all along the shaft and the lighter one has more of it in the head. Even when I swingweight them the same I notice this. But the adjustment is pretty quick.

Sometimes I can feel the head more with the lighter shaft while heavier I think I am feeling the shaft weight a little more. It’s all about the balance that fits you. I like 110-115g shafts because they feel balanced to me, but everyone will have their own sweet spot.

I think i may have found the right shaft weight by accident - I had always played with lighter shaft and I bought these Wilson blades stock (I have not had a really good fitting before)

These blades really do feel good...something else I didn't expect.. the smaller clubhead gives me more confidence which is again counter intuitive.  I think it is because the ball looks bigger, lol.

Anyway, delighted with them - they look utterly stunning too which is always a bonus.

I really hope so.

Trying them out some more and I'm in heaven.   It seems easier to just swing them freely, which might be something to do with having the right shaft weight?? Don't know.

The feel off the face and the consistency in distance is fab.

They are in the bag. 😊

From 790s to MB blades! Now that’s a jump!! Good for you. They’re beautiful.

Picked up the Wilson Staff CBs on a whim on BST and they unseated my ZX7s in the bag. Thinking about picking the blades up too while I still can for a Wilson head-to-head matchup. Seems logical to me..

Those CBs look really nice too... Rick Shiels (UK golf pro with a big audience) reviewed them recently and loved them.

I was playing 115g shafts forever, went to S400 & Rifle in 130+grams. There is a wisdom to old school heavy and the MB setups that lean that way. It's not for everyone but if it works, go with it.

Unfortunately, not for me. Was playing the Modus 120s in my V6's, got the CB's with the DG S300 and lost a full club in distance. Back to the 115g's!

My distance is way down with the CBs as well, though I love the clubs in every other way.  Perhaps in my case it's the shafts, too.

That's interesting, because the lofts are actually stronger than the V6. Which shaft did you get? Anyone else lose distance with the CB?

Hah, hence the "not for everyone". There's a small minority who seem to do better, I'm one of them and it was quite by accident that I discovered it..

I played the blades last season until fall and then I finished out the year with the V6's. I was probably half a club longer with the blades. The Wilson Staff blades and the V6's were two of the nicest irons I've ever owned but the lure of shiny new Srixon's was too much for me to overcome .🤣

I think I’m the only one that went from the shiny new ZX7s to Wilson Staffs lol. I didn’t lose any distance with the CBs and hit them as far as the Srixons with KBS Tour 120 stiff shafts.  If I pick up the blades I might go with $-tapers for some extra height.

My CBs came with the Dynamic Gold S300.

I never gave it much thought in years past, but now that I'm more serious about improving my game I'm curious if there's a shaft that will work better for me.  I may look into a shaft fitting later in the season.

S300s and my swing never match for whatever reason.  I really like KBS Tour and $-taper shafts but I’ve only played around with irons I’ve found on here.

I used to play the S300 and didn't give it a second thought, but there's no other reason to lose distance in a club with a stronger loft than what I was playing. Come to find out the S300 was almost a full flex stiffer than the Modus S 120. It makes a big difference and I just realized I ain't a spring chicken anymore. It was an eye opener for me

Those Zx7's were sweet, but I was coming off the V6 and I absolutely loved them. I'm glad to hear you didn't lose any distance, which means I'm in the wrong shaft.

This could be my case as well.  I'm still fairly young....in my head.  Not so much in my body. 😀

I second the staff cb’s.  Just picked up my set today and took them to the range for the first time.  Effortless distance.  They feel and perform fantastic!

Seriously thinking of picking up some the staff MB’s from 8-pw to blend in from time to time.

Doing that, as opposed to picking up a full on second set of MBs, comparing the two, and selling one full set on here, is definitely the more logical take.  The minimalist in me though is screaming for 3-P MBs and Wilson Staff wedges that I’m sure I’ll skull no more than 50 yards every time lol
