Wilson Staff Blades - First Impressions

Recommended Posts

Got my custom order in yesterday. I did 4-PW with C Taper limited black in 125g S+ straight in. Unfortunately the only X stiff on the fitting cart was X100 so I had to take a guess and use the MP20 head to test the C Tapers. Hopefully Wilson gets this sorted out as it’s not ideal for those in this bracket of club.

Anyways we are snow covered here but we have a range with heated bays so I was able to test outdoors with a swing caddie for rough yardages. Ball speeds were very consistent and flight was exactly what I’d like to see. The clubs are as soft as my MP20 were with a bit more sizzle off the face. The long irons are very small but quite easy to hit. Only drop off if you put a properly terrible swing on it and nothing will save you then.

I found them very easy to work up and down or draw/fade. I struggle to fade irons but with these it feels like you just think the shot and it happens. Overall fantastic first impression and great build. I’d like to see these in a few more bags as they are criminally underrated. I will update this thread when I head to Florida on the 1st of Feb.

Yours have a longer ferrule on them than mine do. Maybe the black shafts?

Those are some great looking sticks! I hit the FG-59's several years ago and was seriously impressed (yes, seriously!). If those are as good or better than the 59's, I anticipate you will have a lot of fun with them.

Lucky bastard.

Yes I got rid of the MP20s because I got a good deal on these and I had a lot of money in the Mizunos. I went and hit them back to back and there was no difference in feel and for some reason I felt more confident with the look at address with the Wilsons. I also saved a bit of money which is a bonus. The iBlades were not fit for me so I won't discuss them. The Wilsons are slightly longer than the Mizunos and tend to not spin quite as much. They are VERY similar irons. I could happily play either set. I did find on sim that I had bigger distance dropoffs in the long irons with the Mizunos on miss hits. Not sure if that would be the case for everyone. The Wilsons also seem to do a bit better on thin strikes. Also, even though the Wilsons feels as good as the Mizunos, they feel more powerful despite still feeling soft which I prefer. The MP20 are probably the softest iron you could ever hit - almost to the point of feeling weak? The ball speed is good but they seriously feel like you're hitting marshmallows.

Attached two reviews. This guy seems to think the Wilsons have a bit more help as well which I agree with.

If I could get myself to move past my Wilson V6 irons then I'd be all over these. I loved the FG Tour 100s I had two years ago also.
