New JPX Line?

Recommended Posts

Well, that pretty much guarantees some sort of new material introduction or the use of a foam/gel dampener or a different finish. Think about it, what hasn't Mizuno done yet? Hollow body? Check x3 (H4, H5, HMB). Titanium faces? Check (MX1000). Flat blade? Check (loads). Small Cb? Check (loads). Cast GI iron when they are known for forgings? Check (lots). New Material? Check (boron). Ball speed in a player's iron? Check (power frame or w/e the call the outside of the 900 tour and 919 tour now).

Only thing left is either infusing with gel/foam/ball speed booster or a darker finish. I guess they could go something massively SGI but they have had that before and it didn't sell very well. I think it was one of the MX series irons that came stock with 2 hybrids, was hollow headed in the mid irons, and a fat cavity in the short. We couldn't give them away. Technically any of the models could be blended with the JPX Fli-Hi as well to make a SGI set. I fit this very often to low speed players and start them around the 7i in the Hot Metal/whatever fat iron of their choosing. Haven't had one complaint yet, in fact, usually have people request the full run of the hybrids to the 7i because they like them that much.

Speculation is always fun, here are two thoughts I have. First he mentioned that they were surprised how well the ST200X driver sold. That was a Japanese influenced, extreme lightweight driver with their own Japanese lightweight shaft. He did not mention it but it seems similar to a XXIO that caters to the older and wealthier country club set. I think they may explore this option in the JPX iron line since there is the demand in North America experienced in the driver. Second is a hollow body iron in the game improvement category. It seems like everyone wants to a least try a hollow body iron, including me. The HMB is a players distance club so I wonder if they will offer a second hollow body offering in game improvement. Honma has hollow body in the game improvement XP-1 line, PXG has an extreme forgiveness club, Muira claims that the IC-601 is game improvement, and Ping has the G710. My thoughts.

Played the 919 Tours for a bit which was an amazing iron, but my eye I guess got tired? of the hosel transition - putting all that mass in the toe led to a visual trick to many that there was offset when offset was nearly non-existent. I started to struggle a bit with alignment of the mid-irons that was clearly my own fault and issue but decided to move on.

Switched the MP20s and love the visuals at address. If they could put "invisible" tungsten in the toe and go back to a "conventional" hosel or MP20 style address, I'd definitely be all over that - don't think that's the surprise though.

I got shown a good trick once for checking what 'square' is for your irons, it probably seems ridiculously obvious / simple but I found it helpful - set the club face up using the straight edges of your flooring, be it tiles, paving, carpet aligning the bottom groove to the straight edge.

It often surprises me how far out I am

Agreed. Although Its mainly just mass that creates the forgiveness in the 919’s, when I switched from 919 Tours to MP20 MMC’s I noticed a drastic improvement in off center strikes, the titanium/tungsten really works and I’m glad Mizuno stuck with it and improved the feel with the copper underlay

The looks don't really win me over. I'm sure they perform great, just not enough to make me break out my wallet with those looks.

Remember what Voshall said on TXG, each cycle gives them an opportunity to focus on a major facelift for a single product within the line. The way I see it, it’s the Forged irons turn. 900 was focused on the Tours, 919 the Hot Metals & HM Pro. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see T20 laser milling across the JPX Irons. They’ve got to take on Srixon.

The big surprise he eluded to...I hope for for a new look in the wedges, S series returns with a JPX style CBX and/or Hi Toe design. They need greater differentiation between T and S, and a chromoly GI wedge may be more popular than their stainless JPX wedges.

Yeah super common. Take a quick peak through Tour Spec Golf at any game improvement iron and you'll almost never a PW weaker than 43 and 5is in the 22* range almost universally. Not to get into it as I don't want to start a war/the 90000000th thread on the topic, but it serves a purpose for the average player and Japan has realized that for a long time. I just clicked on the two fattest irons I came across first on the site and the specs are exactly what I thought (see below). Japan is also very common for having a 10 iron. It is not a PW, it is a 10th iron. You see that even in the US Honma releases and Callaway tried it with the BB04 but it confused way too many people and they abandoned ship for the next release.
