Oh my. There is to be a serious ice storm to hit after midnight tonight for Asheville and this part of the country. It is going to be up to a half inch accumulation. Very few of us are planning on going to work tomorrow.

So the fact that I have a main golf instructor that I have been working with for 5 years I rarely look at the Instruction Academy thread on the WRX. I will tell you about my 80 year old Grade A stick coach Ed in the future. He has helped my game greatly. About once a month I bop around in the teachings, working on's, and this is how you cure that ill. I was asked my driver distance and how far I hit a wedge? How could those two stats be related I wondered. I knew that Monte was a well respected instructor over there so I had to click. Now honestly my 8 iron on down to all my wedges used for hitting approach shots is one of the strongest facets of my game. I know my distances and can deliver it tight on a good day. Hell the nickname given to me by my Californian desert golf league was "the wedge."

What? there is no need for seeing how to play those clubs better is always my hard headed outlook. Like I said I was captured by the title and Monte's first post. Well I enjoyed reading it and said to myself we will do just that Tuesday and see what happens. First I never hit those clubs full throttle very much. I work on the 1/3, 2/3 and parallel at the top settings going back(8,10 o'clock, and full)  and know what numbers those deliver with various short irons and wedges. I have an extremely smooth tempo with a calm transition. Now remember I am always the shortest hitter in the group after listening to that baloney self praise by the commish. 😉 I ain't got it all regarding playing the game jack. 

So whenever faced with a shot yesterday from 135 in I took one extra club. I sometimes in the summer teach young male beginners on the range. I ask them to just give me a smooth placed base hit over the infielders head with your golf shot. I tell them swinging for the warning track is not HOW IT IS DONE. That is hitting the ball hard and not swinging it with rhythm, Rhythm is Key boys.  As soon as you figure that out the faster you will be to becoming a bogey golfer I add.

So I took my own preaching  and combined it with Monte's thread's message and implemented them into my round.  I was concentrating on hitting that pure smooth base hit over the infielders heads, so about a 75 % of full swing. I did that every time I had a 8 through SW in my hand for an approach shot . What do you know? I hit my yardages even better than I would during an on day. I am a believer, it worked, I was healed and saved.  This proved to me once again that you can never learn enough about this grand game. Heck one of those yardage shots set up my putt of the year (so far). Oh I will be telling you of that sick birdie hole eventually. I say thanks to Monte for the info. 

Try it gents if you need from your shorter clubs more accurate distances. Message..we all swing those clubs too hard.

Mike, my less than a year known but now in my top 3 of golf buddies to play with , has been on occasion (never out or place or too frequently mind you) dropping some golfisms my way. I have always enjoyed them in serious moderation, but love hearing a new fabulous one.

 

So the 16th green sits out there with plenty of water surrounding it.  It is with a decent drive a 100 yard shot into the peninsula green.

Myself and the two others hit nice shots to inside 25 feet. 

The north pointing blonde spikes hair guy then lays on this,..........." ok  Carl we got 3 in there with decent birdie looks, how about you join us on the dance floor?" 

Carl let's it fly but it is soon obvious he has yanked it. It's got no chance of hitting land. Carl lets the club drop to the ground and puts his hands on his knees in disgust. He gagged and rinsed it. I felt kind of bad for laying on the pressure. whoops. 

 

Y'all ready?

 

Mike says to Carl , " Awww, it's wasn't that bad, I'll give you an 8 on entry!"   

  I howled. There he went again. Diving reference for those that need assistance.

Well of late I have experienced steady play. I have had bunches of pars. Birdies have not come and doubles have been avoided. On borrowed time I know but I pretty much expected the trend to continue. Due to the 15 mph winds on a 42 degree day I felt an 82 would be a good day. 

Started out with 3 steady pars and felt comfortable. Nope a round of stable play like I have been experiencing of late was not to be in the cards. Starting on 4 tee the mess began. I tripled that big downhill dogleg par 4. I bogeyed the next 3. It was getting shaky. My mindset was you are overdue for some reality mr. so it's possibly going to be an ugly round. On the 8th tee I yet once more parked a drive OB in route to a double. Oh my I was having big trouble out there. Took Par on 9 and finished the front 8 over. The temperature would rise at the turn and we would peel off two layers. The winds went from 15-20 to 5-10 and the sun was there now full speed. I had a few pars and a bogey to start the back 9.

We got to a short dog leg left par four that has a pond in front of the green and has a menacing approach shot of 150 to 120 depending on how long one hits a drive. I have a 120 yard shot in. The wind is definitely in my face. I looked at it and remembered the Monte lesson. I grabbed one club more for the wind and one extra for the Monte smooth base hit shot. It looked too long at the apex. It lands on the back sloped knoll behind the green and releases down onto the green surface. I really thought it was too much club but it got me to the middle of the green. Thanks Monte it worked at that point for a 3rd time. I faced a very difficult putt. It was an 35 footer that started with a banked uphill to the right putt. It had to get up there and then almost die, just barely shutting off the gas on a hillside is what it called for. Once one accomplished that the putt would have to start trickling to the left gaining speed traveling downhill 4 feet to the pin. The TOUR make % on that one was 10 boys.

As I am looking at this challenge from all angles and really studying it Mike ( by far the best putter in the club) says.......

 

" LP I wouldn't get out of the electric chair to take that putt. "

 

I was in a pre putt zone so a baby smirk was my only reaction.

 

I had a line I just had to execute the perfect speed. The Toulon put a smooth stroke on it and it went up to the spot on the hill I selected. The group kind of gasped as it turned to the hole. That one has a chance I heard. It had a beautiful pace as it slipped into the hole center cut coming downhill to the left. I tossed my putter kind of gently off the green and did a little dance. I looked Mike directly in the face and said,

 

" Now look, some of us have some touch around here MR. Electric Chair Guy!"

 

It was by far the best putt I have made this winter season. It helped me to catch fire. With the help of Monte's short irons swing suggestion I peppered the pins coming in. Putter was steady. I got two more birdies. 8 over front 2 under back. I shot a 78. WHAT?!!  You old man you, by hanging in there you broke 80 some how once more?  The streak continues because I found the way to flip the switch. I went from hands on my knees to dancing on a green. I found my Southern Karma out there.

We played bonus holes until right before dark. I met for the first time the cool cart barn dog as we packed it up. I stopped by the Hare and Hound to pick up dinner to go in Landrum. As I turned down the road I saw a pretty glow in the sky. Yes it's over those mountains I travel home to Asheville. I once again had a full fun day down in the upstate of SC.

The thread on punch shots made me think of  discussing this.  So I just wanted to get some examples to show how golfers hit their wedges way too hard and too far and it makes it more difficult to manage distance because trajectory and spin are not consistent.  Almost without exception, golfers over the handicap of 0 improve their proximity when they hit more club,  with a shorter backswing, with less speed and keep trajectory and spin down on most shots.  
 

There’s no world long wedge contest, they are made for accuracy not distance.  You ever notice how higher level players have much shorter swings on wedges than driver?  Most of you know that even though I’m an old fat man, I can carry a driver 3 bills without much trouble, yet my PW is 130-135.  140 is NEVER a PW unless there is an extenuating circumstance.  

 

Whenever I have this discussion with people, here are the comments I get and what I respond.

 

1.  “I can easily hit it that far, that’s my stock PW.”  I don’t doubt you can, but why would you want to?

 

2.  “I’m a very good wedge player.”  I don’t doubt it, but you’re not on the PGA and even they are trying to be better.

 

3.  “I don’t do well hitting partial wedges.”  It’s not always a partial wedge, it managing the length of your swing better because it’s too long.

 

4.  “Tour players hit their wedges far, and high.”  Yes, but they are skilled enough and practice to manage trajectory, distance and spin...and have you every watched carefully at how many lower trajectory shots they hit inside 150 on the range and course?

 

5.  “The greens at my course are firm and I need to do that to hit it close to tucked pins.”  See Scott Fawcett’s thoughts on going for the pin.

 

Learn to hit all your short irons 2 clubs shorter than what you think you hit now with a shorter backswing.  This is especially helpful for those with excess arm swing in their backswing, but even if you go back to your full yardage, you’ll have another shot in your bag, but most will find a much better level of consistency not trying to hit short irons full (max distance).

Another sign of an ill spent youth is my declining physical health.  A few back surgeries and next thing you know, P3P is throwing down barley pops like chiclets when he plays (on doctors orders mind you).

My most recent back surgery occurred about 9 weeks before a pretty fun golf event.  As evidence of my ill spent adulthood, I wasn't cleared to play for 12 weeks.  And off I went, I knew I couldn't hit full shots, but what the heck.  Prior to the injury my handicap had ballooned to a 6 (maybe even an 8), at the time wiping my butt was an ordeal much less hitting a golf ball, but forge on I did.  Anyway, off I went taking half swings around the course.

Oddly enough, the distance loss wasn't as great as you would think from the tee, maybe 20-25 yards because I was hitting the center of the club face more consistently.  Then, because the idea of heading back to the surgeon so shortly after the last time was forefront in my mind, I clubbed up.  And I mean I clubbed up a lot, putting the 9-3 swing on it.

At the end of the day we were discussing our failures and successes and the final tallies.

P3P fired a tidy 3 over having never lifted my hands above my shoulders on the front or back swing.

I am all in on this theory and while I don't have the mental strength to do it 100% of the time when healthy, I do try.
