Best colored golf ball to see among the fall leaves?

Minarets

Recommended Posts

I prefer to play yellow during the year and white as well.  2 years ago, I played orange and pink balls in the fall as the yellow wasn’t enough contrast when the sun was in your face to see.

Orange and pink balls were always easy for me to see among the leaves.  I just picked up some orange Wilson Duo Optix. Will try and put in play tomorrow in colder/wet conditions.  Anyone have a good orange/pink ball that plays well in fall/wet/cold?

That is why I cannot do green or yellow during the fall. I live in Tennessee. Lots of leaves are on the ground. When the sun is shining and it reflects off the golf balls green or yellow and white golf balls are hard to see. The orange and pink were very easy for me

I remember the MGS folks saying matte finish balls don't perform as well in wet conditions. Not sure if that's true or not. I used to play the Volvik Vivid balls, but stopped one Fall when I couldn't see them in the leaves. I know Vice has a glossy neon red version of the pro soft / pro / pro plus- you could give one of them a try.

  • Minarets changed the title to Best colored golf ball to see among the fall leaves?

My first few rounds this year, I lost a bunch. I bought some green on sale and couldn't find them in the fairway. 🤣

I got a bag of orange mix off eBay and they seemed to work well. I recently bought a box of 45 red and orange Nittro's that were cheap. See how bad they play tomorrow.

I used the orange Wilson Optix balls yesterday. And while I had a hard time seeing them in flight off of a driver, they were super easy to spot on the ground among the leaves.

the bad

is prefer them be shiny and not matte.  On wet ground they certainly pick up a lot of mud/dirt and take more effort to clean.  Second. I absolutely could not putt with them.  Too soft. I felt they were a little short on the drives and on pitches/chips thought they SHOT in to orbit.  Went way too far.  Putting had zero feel.  Was crushing them past the hole. I ended up keeping a ProV in the pocket to putt with once on the green after 4 holes.

all in all they did what I had hoped which was easy to find.   Now I need one that actually plays decent on touch shots and on greens

Typical for the very low compression matte balls. That's why I prefer mid compression and also shiny too. The Soft Feel is an easy choice (yellow). But, if it has to be orange or pink, maybe Wilson 50 elite in pink?

I still find white amongst the leaves easier than yellow or orange. The biggest problem I have is with the lower angle of the sun there is more shine coming off the grass and the reflection of the gloss ball is lost in it. I have a sleeve of E12 in red and a box of Soft Feel in red that I am going to try this week. They were my low light ball, could see them easier then any other color. Hoping they hold up to the leave and the fall sun.

For me the Taylor Made yellow still is the easiest to pick up, even when mixed among yellow leaves.  It's just such a piercing, highlighter like yellow that it refuses to blend in.

I'm glad the orange is easy for you to see.   A few years ago, I purchased some orange Bridgestone and they were very difficult for me to find, even in the fairway.   The Optix balls are different though.

I had a similar issue. Pink and Orange are a nightmare to find in the NorthEast where we get a ton of foliage. Shiny green seem to work best for me. I love the look of a matte ball but as mentioned they tend to get dirty super fast in the damp conditions.

While visibility is terrible in the air, I've heard that light blue works as a good contrast against browning grass and the reds/oranges of leaves. There's an interesting article that compares about 5 different ball colors in various conditions on course; I'll see if I have a link saved. Apparently red, orange and blue were the toughest to spot. Then again, it all depends on the person-- rods and cones and all.

If the sun is at your back, yellow is easy to see among the leaves, but when looking into the sun, I cannot see it.  I have no problems seeing orange and pink tho.

Perhaps I am in the minority, but white golf balls are the easiest for me to see during the fall golfing season.

I can see it both ways - pure white isn't a natural color, so it's going to pop out among the browns, oranges, and yellows of fall foliage.  On the other hand, colored balls can create a luminescence in the sunlight, like @Minarets mentioned.

These are working out well. I still manage to lose a few, but they seem to work well.

I suspect this will be regionally dependent. Here in Colorado, at least on the Front Range, I find orange, pink and bright lime green work pretty well. The yellow that is used on Titleist and Z-stars isn't so good, though.

White can also get lost as we have a lot of leaves that have a silvery side when they fall off. I was helping a partner find a ball over this past weekend and we both walked right by a white ball several times even though it wasn't actually covered by leaves. Just well camouflaged.

I've always found that blue balls vanish in the air and ground. Maybe, during certain conditions they are ok. The blue gamer soft had to be the biggest waste of a good ball in modern times.

I agree. My son bought 2 sleeves of blue noodle balls. Lost 2 on first 2 holes, soon as i hit it, lost in the sky, you would think the blue would show up on the ground, but they don't. Bad idea.

To be honest I bought a bunch of orange and red thinking that would be great. Turns out I am finding the white better at this rate.

The yellow against red leaves works well.
