I used to play golf with a guy a while back who was 6'3 or 6'4 and played +1.5" length irons (I'm 6'1). I tried his 5-iron one day at the range which would've been 39.5" in length and I absolutely flushed that thing. Shot after shot was right out the middle, nice high draws, I was very surprised. No idea what the swing weight was but they felt great. I'm toying with the idea of going longer in my next set of irons.

FWIW Rory Mcilroy is like 5'8 or 5'9 and plays all his clubs over standard length. There's no one size fits all in club lengths.

So my OG irons were +1" and my new irons are stock length. I seem to hit my new irons very well, but they are much nicer irons. It makes me wonder if they were 1" over, would I hit them better?

The only reason I thought about it is a set of heads came up for sale so it would be easy enough to  do. If it's worth doing at all, that is.

When I was fitted for my OG's it was 1"+ and +1* lie. I don't feel like I'm hunched over at all. It seems like my height is a weird cutoff.

So worth the cost/effort, or just game the hell out of my OE sticks and be happy?

it just depends on your wrist to floor measurement and posture at address. If they feel too short or long, they probably are. I'm 6'6", and play 1" over, but I can play a standard set just fine too, I have really long arms.

Since I switched to graphite shafts, they have been a half inch over the stock steel and I really like it.

When I did the TaylorMade fitting, he had me at a half inch over and 1 upright, I think.

I will add my 52 and 56 wedges are the same length as my pitching wedge. I felt too hunched with a standard wedge.

My son's 6'3, 200lbs, and doesn't play much golf.  But when he does play he plays my backup blades which are standard, and he chokes down, hits the sh** out of them, 5i is 200+, straight.  Point, all depends on what you're comfortable with.

Friend worked various tour trucks back a few years ago and said very rarely did any of the taller pros go over +1/2"

Ernie Else - +1/2 and +3/4 back in the day

Stewart Cink - +1/4" and 1/2" before

Pieters - +1/2"

D. Love III - +3/4" at one point, then standard

Robert Karlsson - +1"

Wrist to floor is most important. Figure out your wedge length and go from there.

Additionally, us taller golfers need length in the shorter clubs, and not too much more in the longer clubs.   A set 1-2" across an entire set makes your short irons better, but your 4,5 way too long.

I'm 6"3 with a 37.5" WTF. Broad shoulders,  shorter arms and small hands.  I started my wedges all at 37.5", and did 3/8" increases up to 4i.    The results have been great. Added length allows for proper hip rotation.

My shafts are 122g X stiff.  Keep in mind the added length will 'drop' the flex down a step or two.

I’m not as tall as the OP and recently tried a 3/8” increment build after reading about it here on WRX.  Used the 5 iron as the base.  I made it 1/4” longer than standard and then did the 3/8” increments from there.  I really like it.  The OP may want to consider this as a way to get some nice lengths.

Just an update on this. I think it’s a bit too long for me.  Short irons felt a little cumbersome on the finesse shots and longer a bit heavy.  Some of this is clearly due to these heads coming more upright and also the shafts (Dynalite Gold XP R300) being way different than I have ever used (DG S300).  Additionally, I’ve been having all sorts of major issues with my ankles since assembling and am about to have surgery number three on the left one.  So, lots of variables on this experiment and even more with me!

I’m going to shorten these a little bit more over the winter a few months after another huge surgery on the right ankle.  I did all sorts of combinations on paper and decided about trimming off 1/8” or so on the long (through 6) and then also begin the 3/8” between the 6 and 7.

Finished lengths based off 5 with 1/2” drop to 6 then 3/8

3 - 39 2/8 (I don’t use)

4 - 38 6/8

5 - 38 2/8

6 - 37 6/8

7 - 37 3/8

8 - 37

9 - 36 5/8

W - 36 2/8

These lengths still might be a bit long.    Whenever I decide on the right length (and can stand), I will modify my graphite iron set to this.
