Well, to get us back on track (and I've been guilty of posting some pre-90's stuff too) how about a couple of mid-90's British Indie gems? Saw these guys at the London Astoria in early '96.

Ok I was holding out on these until I saw Q had the goods to hit 4 pages with his 90's music thread. 😛

 

Nice work sir, it is a popular spot.

 

I'm kind of surprised I am going to be first to put up something from this band.

They are from a neighboring state here in Tar Heel Land. Started at the University of SC (lindsayland as it is often referred to on a different thread.)

They all love the game and play a ton of golf.

Darrius Rucker has a fab smooth voice. I get a bit of Lou Rawls power myself.

 

Back then I was living in the D.C. area. The region went  ga ga for Hootie.

 

I'm not into his country twist though. 

 

Congrats on making the songs from the 90's thread. The 19th hole has some solid older music appreciation choices to enjoy and participate in.

TEN was released in 1991 and slow to sell only to rocket to #2 on the Billboard chart later in 1992 (13x platinum).

So i'm one of the only people who thought the 90's was all about Gangster rap? I'm telling you guys this decade was the pinnacle of rap music and it's NOT EVEN CLOSE

 

More Wu-Tang for you. The Genius (GZA) was very famous for his smooth beats and softer lyrical style. He had many great songs....The 2 marquee ones from his first 2 albums were "Liquid Swords" and "Breaker Breaker"....which are both very good

 

But my alltime favorite GZA song was "4th chamber" which has one of the low-key most famous beats of the 90s for people who know rap. When the beat drops at around 4:04 to close out the song--I could listen to that 100 times over

So no offense intended, but I consider rap of any kind to have no redeeming features at all.  Just my opinion.

I loved it. Probably because i grew up playing basketball. But looking back i appreciate it in a different way. Guys like Dr Dre and Ice Cube, then the Wu-Tang clan and many of it's members. These guys grew up in very unfortunate circumstances and rap was their outlet to sing about it. Some of these guys , Dre, Cube and RZA in particular, became very succesful in other ventures (Dre for Beats, Cube for Acting, RZA as a soundtrack guru in Hollywood).

 

When i listen to the lyrics now, i think about them more. Some of the guys , like Ghostface Killah for example, were actually very articulate in talking about their circumstances growing up. You just have to get past some of the swearing etc...
