Disassemble 2021 Scotty Cameron phantom 5.5

Recommended Posts

I have done it. It is pretty simple to take them apart. First off, make sure you have the correct allen wrench for the 4 small screws. Add a little heat to the screws before trying to turn them as there is loctite on the threads from the factory that you will want to soften up. Easy to strip the heads of the screws if you don't heat them up a bit. The sole plate is held in by some double-sided tape in addition to the screws. If you heat up the sole where the weights are (I would remove them first if you have a wrench as they have rubber o-rings that can melt when heated) and where the screw holes are, the sole plate should loosen up. See attached pictures for reference.

Maybe you guys can answer this question regarding Scotty Mallet's, other than sight lines and tolerances, what are the differences between an off the rack 5.5 and a ct 5.5?  Thank you

Only time (to me) tour issue would be considered is if it's something impossible to buy OTR.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I have never replaced the double side tape on any scotty sole plate/cavity. Never noticed a difference with or without. I just trust the screws to be screws and hold things in place.

I guess I can try to reassemble it without the adhesive and see if I have any rattles or vibrations. If I do then cross the bridge of a sole tape

I have picked mine apart, too much heat melted the tape, but I did reassemble it with grip tape. No difference in feel/sound.

So I am here some 5 months later to eat my crow. On my 2022 X5.5 I did notice a hollow/tinny sound once reassembled without tape. The tape used appears to be 3m VHB automotive tape.

Not sure why, but mine sounded hollow without the tape. Any idea why or what can I do to fix it?

I opted not to go back with VHB (mostly because I could not find any locally and am impatient), but instead went with the Scotch brand Indoor Double Sided Mounting Tape cut in to small pieces and applied in similar spots to the factory placement. This killed any little bit of hollowness to the sound and it now has a very pleasing tock when struck. The tape is so readily available and inexpensive that I have zero worries about longevity as I will simply disassemble, replace, and reassemble as needed.

In case you would want to go the route of factory, here's a link to 3m's VHB page

Already a dead horse, but I complain all the time about the "fake" demand for this stuff.  It's so strange to me that that extra stamping with an odd ball paintfill will all of the sudden make a putter worth 10-15x.  So weird.

I can now confirm after today that the 22 PX 5.5 is about identical inside to the 21.

Does anyone have any suggestions for the double sided adhesive? Everything I’ve been seeing is on the thicker side which I fear would cause the bottom plate to stick out to far.

Look at 3m automotive panel trim tape, it's black with a red backing, comes in a variety of widths and thickness.

Clean, add a little pre heat (5-10 seconds hair dryer or heat gun) and that'll stick like no tomorrow.

3/32 Allen wrench...

Mine is/was the same.  Sounded hollow after I had it DLC refinished.  Opened it up and all the tape was removed/missing, so I put in two layers of double sided grip tape and now it's great.  Very solid sounding.  Just needs something to absorb the vibrations in the cavities.

Easy to do but don't use too much heat to loosen the Loctite on the threads of the soleplate screws...

do you have to use heat to loosen?

good to know what size too before I started to screw around with this thing

well that was easier than I thought

Used the 2 size allen wrench in my 2022 11.5

the 3/32 didn't fit

Didn't have to heat anything to remove

as I expected, the guy who did the aftermarket work did NOT put back in the double stick tape

I used the scotch brand listed above

was a little worried as it seemed thick, but worked with no issues

and the tin can awful sound and feel is totally gone.

Excited to get this out there this season.

OT but, I was fortunate to play with a top 50 LPGA player who had a masterful T22 and although I thought it was beautiful.. I cannot imagine why its 20K+ lol. Insert similar to the other CC button back the korn ferry player had and that’s at least 800-1K. Some are beautiful but its just crazy.

You are correct...my mistake.  I didn't have my readers on and the size of the Allen wrench is a 5/64.  I used double sided tape the first time and then went back and did it a second time using the Scotch brand mounting tape and it works/feels/sounds even better.  Easy enough to do over and over, if needed.

How is the neck attached on these? Is it actually welded from the bottom like it looks!?

I tried the double sided scotch brand it is a bit thick and the sole plate stick out just a tiny bit.
has anyone used the dab of silicon as mentioned above?

that should work great I would think??

I ran into the same issue with my detour insert. Clean off the insert and putter so it's a flat surface area. If you put it together without anything on and the face sits perfectly flat then dab silicone and install instantly. If it sinks in and needs to be raised out, then apply a thin bead of silicone along the face or insert and let it dry to the touch then screw on.

The white mounting tape is thick. I use a little bit of heat during assembly and the tape squishes down nicely.
