It's Not a U.S. Issue, it's these stars that have underperformed

The dismal performance of the U.S. team over the past 20 years is not a U.S. issue.  It's an issue of the following individuals not stepping up to perform for their team & country.  I don't know why they've been terrible.

Tiger: 13-21-3 (and he got to choose his partners)

Phil: 18-22-7

Furyk: 10-20-4

Bubba Watson: 4-10-0

Curtis Strange: 6-12-2

Mark O'Meara 4-9-1  (self proclaimed as one of golf's greatest)

Combined record: 55-94-17

Stricker was 3-7-1.  I don't want any of these underperformers as captain, on television, or any where near the team. Old say, when you su*k, you su#k.

A good BM should fix it for ya 🤣

Stricker is a nice guy an all but why he was chosen as captain is a mystery to me. But with so many having losing records it limits the choices I suppose. Ha.

So far Stricker seems like hes done a pretty decent job in pairing and preparing the players for the match.  Maybe there is more to Steve Stricker than most of us who don't know him personally than meets the eye.

Exactly. He's extremely well respected amongst his peers on both tours.

I remember watching him coach a few guys on the practice putting green during the pga championship that had solicited his help.

Why is Sergio been so good then because his putting sucks. Ballstriking by nit handing the other team holes and keeping pressure on gets it done. Makes the other team press and get out of their game.

Because Sergio cherishes the Ryder Cup.  He has passion and has constantly risen to the occasion for Ryder Cup play.  He was mentored by Jose Maria Olazabal who was mentored by Seve Ballesteros.  Not too mad of a mentor lineage right there.  I would rather have a team full of players with Sergio Garcia's passion for the Ryder Cup than almost any other player and their passion.  Maybe that is why Sergio has been one of the best players in Ryder Cup history.

It's because he is a great alternate shot that can putt his great approach shots. He is a great driver on the ball on the other end and so always puts partner in good spot. Best ball he does well too because having a partner frees him up on the greens and he makes a lot of birdies. His singles record is mediocre.

Agreed.  Being what it is 80% of the points a player can contribute assuming they play every session (5) comes from team play.  Sergio has proven to take advantage of what the matches offer.

We pick them based on stroke play performance———-/ to play in a match play event.  There’s the issue.  Europe chose several folks based on past match play performance.  And they always do this.  And they win.  ThAt and putting. We talk all about length.  And I just palm my face. Every damn time. What wins ?  Putting.  Putting. Putting.

Hot take….so based on US stats for the just completed season the team should be

Poston

Reed

Johnson Zach

Kokrak

Gibson

Todd

Burns

Hadley

English

Mahan

Tringale

Schauffle

That is definitely the hot take of the day!🤩

He is a great pressure player in this format. Almost the opposite of what he would do in majors. That 3 wood he hit on 16 today was best shot of tournament so far I'd say. Closed FSU out.

As I typed Thomas hit a lazer iron on same hole!

NA's putting numbers aren't as out of this world as the media makes it seem. They would be poor fits on this course for sure. T

Said it a second ago elsewhere.  The European team played so bad yesterday .  It didn’t matter who was picked. They could have picked  Phil And Freddy and still win.

I wouldn’t go that far but the OP mentioned “last 20 years and used Curtis Strange’s Ryder Cup  as a shining example.  A player who last played in one in ‘95.  Perhaps retirement has dulled my math skills.😏
