Best clothes for winter golfing

Recommended Posts

I live where I can golf year round but it can get a bit chilly in the winter, definitely in the 40's. Was thinking of just heading to REI and trying on jackets until I found one that wasn't too bulky. Last year I started wearing thermal long johns under my golf pants and it was nice. Just not sure about what the best top layers are.

Walking or riding? If riding I'd go for some sort of wind breaker for certain and some light layers under. If walking I'd go for something breathable like a sweater and layer from there, maybe a compression layer if you like that route. Also depends quite a bit on sun, wind, etc. as at that temp 40* can feel far different depending on those variables. I generally walk and carry in 40* temps and it's quite comfortable with the proper setup.

It's also amazing what a hat that covers your ears can do (especially if it's windy).  Not only does it keep your head and ears warm, but if it's windy it reduces wind noise.  The perception of less wind makes it feel less cold for some reason (at least to me).

I have a cozy titleist beanie for this reason!

If you are trying to stay warm and aren't worried about making a fashion statement, the Gerry fleeced lined pants from Costco for $27 will keep you warm until the greens freeze.  You can also pick up a 2-pack of 32 Degree vests for $24 that definitely punch out of their weight class.  A vest is the way to go to be able to swing.

Hi, Toronto Here. 🙂

I wear alot of fleece for the colder months. Thermal long johns (top and bottom) from Uniqlo. Fleece jogger style pants over and a Fleece zip up. I also carry with me a toque (beenie) and a thin muffler to keep my neck warm. Oh and some may laugh, but I bring winter mitts to keep the hands warm.

Edit: Also wear the thermal socks from Uniqlo.

Year-round PNW golfer here. our options have to be fairly waterproof (separate thread, but can't go wrong w Galvin Green and Sun Ice).

for Tops, fleece is great, especially if you have an outer layer to protect against wind/rain. The North Face, Patagonia, or anything from REI (or MEC) is great. Winter mitts are also smart, I use the FootJoy ones.

I also have a rotation of base layers from Under Armour, like this https://www.underarmour.ca/en-ca/p/tops/mens-coldgear-armour-fitted-mock/1366066.html?dwvar_1366066_color=001&start=0&breadCrumbLast=Long Sleeves

the ping norse is the best jacket i have found.  Too warm over 45 degrees if the sun is out.  When its cloudy and windy and cold, this with just an under armour base layer will keep you warm.

I have all 3 versions of this jacket.  The newest one just recently came out so i haven't tested it in cold weather but it feels good

Do any of our European friends at WRX use anything from Sunderland?  The website looks like it may be aimed at a little older crowd, which I am, as the sizes appear to be more regular than really tapered.   Looks like they have several mid layer and gilet combos, but I have no idea if they are actually warm or just some cheap rubbish.

I also live in the bay area and when temps hit anything below 60 we will not be happy campers. We are very fortunate. For me I side on not wearing anything bulky. Best suggestion is picking up a running thermal that hugs the body. Another on is what others have said picking up the 32 degree thermal layer at costco. Add that to a long sleeve over a polo and if you want an added buffer, wear a vest. With that, you can shed layers as the day warms up.

You can get russell athletic compression leggings and long sleeve tops for like $9 at Walmart. Simply wear them under your pants and shirt with a light jacket or vest. In the 40*s is barely cold enough to wear a beanie.

Smartwool 250 base layer. 100 times better than UA

Absolutely agree, and I grew up in Baltimore where UA was king well before they became a worldwide brand. Merino wool is the best base layer for any cold weather activity (skiing, hiking, etc.) and it doesn’t make you feel like a sausage.

It took a global pandemic for me to see the light on neck coverings - a wool or fleece neck gaiter makes a huge difference on those cold days.

Good socks and a beanie. Moved from PNW to CA and all the layers haven’t left the cupboard since, but in a Portland winter I remember layers that were wind-proof and totally waterproof were key. And boxes of hand warmers for the pockets.

Regarding the beanie, I agree if it's not windy.  If the wind is blowing, the beanie works very well.

I've got the Ping Norse jacket in the classifieds if you're interested.

I play quite a bit in the off season here in Germany as long as there's no snow. I will usually wear a fitted baselayer from UA, Nike, or Icebreaker. Then a merino or cashmere sweater then a down or primaloft vest. I'm toasty with these layers when I'm walking. Can't forget a beanie and merino wool socks. If it's windy/rainy I'll throw on my Galvin Green Archie jacket. If it's really cold, I have a heated vest and rechargeable hand warmer in my pockets.

A hydrophobic base layer, both top and bottom - long sleeve, sleeveless - depending on your warmth level, bottoms can be full length, or, not. If you are riding, you may need to go more midweight, vs. lightweight for walking. Sox should be hydrophobic, too. Wool sox work great for me.

Insulated pants for riding; windproof and water resistant pants for walking.

On top, the outer layer is at least windproof, and, usually waterproof (I carry both, the windbreaker is very lightweight and breathable, waterproof jacket is warmer, but, less breathable). For mid-layers,  I have a few 1/4 zips, and, vests for insulation, and, depending on the expected temperatures, I may go warmer, or, lighter. Examples of tops are: Galvin Green Insula Dwight, Ping Edison, etc.

fwiw, I am a PNW guy, and, a walker. I have the Clicgear mitts for my pushcart, and, they help to keep my hands warm. You can put hand warmers in the mitts, but, my hands stay warm enough without them.

I saw that but I am 6' and 175lbs, I don't think a small would fit me. Medium probably but doubtful on the small. If my local shop has these in stock I will try them on and see though.
