Then you've probably played Carolina Lakes?

That's the course where I pretty much built my game in the early years.

We usually play there on the way home from Pinehurst.  Good fun, but I find #3 and #4 kind of meh.

It's been well over 20 years since I've played there. Only hole I really remember is #8 and only because I had a complete and utter meltdown there (very similar to Sam Burns' yesterday!) during the first qualifier event my senior year.

Suffice to say I was -2 going into that one and wound up carding a 40 for the 9 hole event. Might still be half of a Cleveland 60° at the bottom of the pond on the left 😂

That may be the place I left a Power Bilt 3 wood in a lake at or it was at Beacon Ridge in Pinehurst--- can not remember for sure--- Back in my 20s I had a horrible temper on the golf course. I learned to repair clubs out of self perservation.

Actually only played it once and that was after moving, really didn’t get truly into this crazy game until after high school.

Spent about 2 hrs of my practice time today playing with that BECU wedge---- Learned to hit it out of the sand and it works good from greenside bunkers. I can hit a darn near straight up popper with the face all the way open. Actually the funky looks grow on you after a while. I usually call hybrids little funkys because they all look funky to me. So now I guess I can call it the funky wedge--- Also spent about an hour with the lead tape getting the PM 56 dialed in. I also practiced the old 11 iron some and it is a keeper too but as bad as I hate to I may have to change the original grip. I am going to try after I rest some to rough it up and clean it some. I did not play per say today but did have a 6 hr practice session. Mostly short game but did hit 2 buckets of balls. Went out about 8 am this morning and got home at 2. Had a fun session and straightened out some stuff

I drove 9 hours south today at 90mph

Where did you grow up in NC at? I was in Charlotte and the folks on Step Moms side were around Pitt County.

Speaking of Bay Tree  I have the data plate off the big water tower sitting in my shop. The company I drove a truck for did the demolition on the water tower I guess about 4 years ago now. I hauled all but one load of that tower out and got the data plate. The last week it was open I played all the courses 7 days straight took vacation time. That Robbers Roost , Beachwood and Possum Trot were my courses back in the day. Sadly only Beachwood is left now. And BTW at 64 yoa I still have a head full of shoulder length hair just ask Uncle Cardy.

Side - side note. Small world.   My grandpa did the grading work  and shaped  all the tees and greens of robbers roost and possum trot.  He worked under The architect Russel  Breeden  .  I played possum trot several times before it closed. Never got to play robbers roost.  I have a list of the courses he shaped , and have played around half of them.  Including  my home course in upstate sc.

It is a small world indeed--- My old man may have very well known your Grand Dad--- My Old Man was involved with the group when Robbers Roost was built he was one of the small investors and one of the player consultants. My old man knew Russell Breeden in fact I met him when I was a kid. He also worked with the Palmer group when Kings North at MBN was built. In fact I played Kings North with my old man 2 weeks before it was open to the public. I was around 13 or 14 at the time. Yep I always had a lot of ties here even though I was born and raised in North Charlotte. In fact I take pride in the fact I have as many if not more ties than a lot of these  ***hats that were born and raised here. This area was my second home growing up. Beachwood and Eagles Nest are about the last 2 70s type courses left up there. I did play my last round at Possum Trot as I did at Indian Wells ,Robbers Roost and Bay Tree--- With Blades and persimmon. For me no other way. Possum Trot and Indian Wells were played with a certain set of VIPs you know a lot about.

Yep.  Late 60s was a time whne they were rocking and rolling. One course to another. Never even bringing the equipment home. Just course to course.  From Virginia to MB.

i have a box of grading blueprints from around 30 courses.  They’re rolled up and stuffed in a big box.  Some 6 ft in length. They were what my grandpa used to build the green complexes with.  Hand drawn by Breeden.  Grandpas been gone about 12 years now. And I still haven’t unboxed all these.  I unrolled a couple.  But put them back and never came back to it.   It’s one of those things you don’t want to do in a rush.    I’m going to have to make time to sort these properly.       My plan was to frame a few big ones for a big wall space I have , and to donate a few to courses that still exist.  Perfect thing to hang in a clubhouse or pro shop.  They won’t have anything like this.

Sorry not meaning to hijack.  Just anytime people mention old school MB courses , robbers roost snd possum trot get mentioned.  Sad that both are gone.  I enjoyed possum trot.  another Breeden course that’s gone down there is cypress bay in Little river.  My sister in law used to own a condo on that course.  It was a good little track for locals.

Yep I forgot about Cypress-- What was bad they had spent a bunch of money on it right before it closed--- I know of two people that tried to lease it one was from Charlotte--- They wanted Frankie Vareen to lease it but he and his son had already gotten Eastport and were in the process of getting it back into shape which they did--- I do not venture up on the North End anymore-- I still can not ride far even in my Benz

Yep the front half is to be used for housing for CCU the back part is too swampy to build anything on. Now on a lighter note the Wizard is to remain open. For the 4th time in 20 years they were proposing putting houses on it but it got shot down again. The same guy who owns the Witch owns the Wizard and Man O War.
