Car Shows on TV. Who’s a fan?

My carrier is Xfinity/Comcast. Most are on the ‘Motortrend’ channel. There are quite a few. Iron Resurrection, Texas Metal, Phantom Works, Bitchin’ Rides, Fast N’ Loud (Discovery), Chasing Classic Cars, Garage Squad, Hand Built Hot Rods, Full Custom Garage, Count’s Kustoms (History channel)… There are more that aren’t coming to me at the moment. My favorite is probably Bitchin’ Rides. The quality of car/truck they put out is 2nd to none. I read the minimum is $250,000 with a 2 year turnaround. I think most of the ground up, full on customs are well north of that $250k.

Hate most of them, same trope for the popular ones.

 

Find car for show or auction, said show/auction is a few days away, crew stays up all night to finish car, run into a major last minute issue, somehow get the issue fixed, finish car upon sunrise, get vehicle on truck and head to show/auction. Rinse, wash and repeat.

 

 There are some good ones that don't do this and go through proper restoration, rebuild, etc. But you can also find similar videos/build on YouTube.

A lot of them are following that recipe. That’s pretty much Gas Monkey Garage in a nutshell. It’s why Bitchin’ Rides stands out.

I really enjoyed the ‘Biker Build Off’. Two custom bike builders built a custom bike and had to ride them to a bike show. Some really talented builders competed. Not like the OCC/buy a frame crap. Seems the custom bike trend has mostly come and gone. A few of the bikes from.

I used to really enjoy watching full-on resto/custom car shows with a seemingly unlimited budget...until there were 7 of the exact same show with a different name and it was more about the "image" and scripted bs.

 

I now stick to Mighty Car Mods, Dirt Every Day, Hot Rod Garage, Roadkill, Roadkill Garage, and Faster with Finnegan.

Top Gear/5th Gear/Three Blokes from UK, I mean Grand Tour. I like a little entertainment/humor, less drama. 

And... WRC on Redbull Channel for racing.

Full Custom Garage is my favorite--- I like his talent and the knack of building stuff out of junk without a lot of fancy tools--- Roadkill and Roadkill garage are my favorites too stuff like we used to do---- Dave Kindig I can do without too many glitzy mega bucks cars that are basically trailer queens--- Texas Metal I like his chassis building skills but the end product most times does not excite me---- The one with Joe Martin out of Texas I like a lot of his stuff. Gas Monkey well meh sometimes it interests me sometimes not Richard Rollins needs to be renamed Richard Noggin. I also like the one out of Maryland Junkyard Empire. Like the one where the guy goes in a junkyard and does the history on some of the different models of cars-- Saw a lot of these shows when I was laid up last year with a broken back

Yes on Joe Martin and ‘Iron Resurrection’. I was first introduced to his talents when him and his bro competed on Biker Build Off a couple times. They still build bikes as well. Really liked the one below. I agree Dave’s builds are mostly all high end trailer queens. I read it’s a minimum 2 year wait and $250k minimum. And that’s before the show got so popular. But the quality is second to none and it’s unlike most of the other ‘rush to beat a deadline BS’.

I have mixed feelings.  Having owned a restoration shop since before they were on TV , I know what it did to the customers mind.  They went from reasonable beings to thinking overhauling was real overnight.  It’s not real. Not at all.   Pimp my ride was not real.  Etc. 35 guys cannot build a rusty car into a  finished product in 60 hours. Much. Less can the 10 they show working on it do it.  
 

gas monkey does not buy a car today and flip it at auction 3 days later after blowing it apart etc. 

 

you’d be shocked how many people came in expecting that overnight stuff.  Luckily the 08 economy collapse killed off enough of the belief in miracles so that seems to have gone back to normal.  
 

 

then there’s the taste aspect.  I’m cursed with good taste.  Most of my clients come to me because of past builds.  So that shows it to be true. I won’t build it how you want it.  Not entirely.  If it’s ugly.  Go to someone else.  My point here is this.  Watching these shows is a mixed bag.  Some things I love. Some of it is butt ugly junk . Example.  Richard from gas monkey.  Generally has bad taste of left to his own devices.  Aaron Caughman ( sic?) on the other hand has an  impeccable eye for stance , style , wheels and building a car that just has the proper stink on it.  So I watch some and can’t watch others.  
 

same is true for me at car shows in person.  I don’t enjoy them.  I can’t just walk around and look. I find myself rebuilding each one in my head , to help it.  Lol.  
 

for whatever reason. I’ve found the motorcycle shows to be more realistic as far as showing what actually happens. And the time frames .
