Anyone else love their crazy fast winter greens? 45 putts yesterday, including a 5 putt.

Shot 95, turned in 92 for handicap (9.x index).  Next highest handicap score in all of 2021 was a 90.  One 5-putt, six 3-putts, the rest 2-putts, not a single 1-putt.  9 greenside wedges and not even one of them stopped close enough to the hole to make the putt. Only one was a bladed sand shot that went over the green for a double wedge on the same hole.  Another one did roll of the green though and end up in a sand trap for another wedge.  We have too much slope for fast greens (course was designed for 9.5), and I'd suspect they were running 14, maybe closer to 15 yesterday. I tracked putts for a while a year or two ago.  Usually was 34-36.  I rarely 3-putt more than twice in a round. And it wasn't even that cold. Overnight was mid-30's and when we played in the afternoon it was over 60.

Bermuda greens ? Ours are dormant, bumpy and very slick. I 3 putted 4 greens from inside 15 feet the other day. I play at another course with bent and rarely 3 putt those.

My local greens are under a foot of snow.  

 

So, they're running a little slow.  

 

I was in Ft Myers Florida last week, and it was like putting on polished concrete.  I could fart on the ball from 15' out, and still get it within a foot.  

 

Gotta love this game.

I am not quite where you are at, but if you are above the hole on some of our greens, you are putting to the bottom of the green.  No chance on stopping.  I have seen balls go up the hole and turn around to come back down, leaving the player with a longer putt from behind where they are standing. It is ridiculous! 

 

Each course should have a flat "safe" zone for winter pin placements.  Otherwise, it feels like mini golf; totally random

Don't have winter golf here in Ontario, but last year one of the nicer country clubs in town was hosting a tournament so they had been getting everything in great shape, including lightning fast, hard greens.

 

The day before, they did a day called "Superintendent's revenge" where they put the pins in the most outrageous spots.  Might be 2' from the edge of a green, might be at the crest of a hump so if you miss in any direction your ball is gone.   They recommended picking up your ball after 4 putts.

Ours are champion Bermuda running 12 right now. Just rolled them. They’re surprisingly smooth.

You would have preferred our course yesterday. Rained all night and most of the morning. Running about 6 on the stimp. Nearly put my back out hitting a 50 footer.

Posted about this is another topic… I live in south central PA and the greens at most places around here are absolute lightning right now. 
 

Play in a large group that is all single digit handicaps. 4 of them were at a country club recently and said they had about 160 putts between their 4some. I played a quick 9 at a public course outside Carlisle and it was like a superintendents revenge. Benign slopes were taking balls off the greens. 
 

Certainly makes the last weeks of the pre-winter golf season interesting!! And always makes me feel like I need a new putter 😂

One year after the original post… I hate how fast our dormant greens have become.  In the past 36 holes I have had 11 3-putts.  My scores are way up there.  Come on spring.
