I had a really great conversation today with Alex and I found out some things about my putting that I knew but the data verified.  That said, we created a putter which ticks off a lot of my wants while addressing the needs which will, hopefully, make me even more consistent. 

 

Material: Carbon Steel

Model: DS72 H (355g)

Milling: Shallow AMP

Finish: Matte Black

Lie: 21* (Red dot)

Loft: 3* (standard)

Alignment: Top Line & Ball Width Flange

Shaft: High step (9" first step) chrome 

Length: 35"

Grip: Grip Master Leather Wrap <- This was the only leather grip they had on hand and it came off the tour van

Engraving: Mr. PING + zip code

Colors: Combination of royal blue, grey, and white

any pictures of the graphics of the shaft?  I think they were going to change the graphics of the graphite shaft just curious if that is true.

I like it! With the black shaft you don’t notice the hosel being different. Great looking putter.

Here is my Anser 5D. I was fitted to something face balanced, but I really like the look of a hosel. They found this “Prototype” head for me. Couldn’t be more happy with it, the adjustment they made with the loft has been very beneficial as well.

I received my welcome kit and did the preliminary testing. In my opinion the Ping app is a simplified version of SAM Putt Lab, which I’ve used to test many putters. Both systems produced the same. The most insightful metrics to me are impact face angle, tempo, and shaft lean at impact. All three can help dial in toe hang, weight, and hosel type. 
 

However, in my experience these systems consistently recommend settings which negatively impact my ball performance. Specifically, they generally recommend too much loft. For example, SAM suggests I play 4* loft which on Quintic shows the ball launching and skidding with back and side spin. Drop my loft 2* and ball performance becomes ideal. 
 

I’m lucky to live in AZ and I’m doing my in person on Thursday. Marrying the two systems will be awesome. Personally, I wouldn’t order a custom build without seeing ball data. 

I was reviewing a few notes and forgot to mention the fitting app and Quintic did recommend different lofts. The Ping app, same as SAM, suggested 4* loft while Quintic suggested 2*.
 

We went with Quintic numbers for ball data and the app for stroke data. The combination resulted in perfect specs. However, I wouldn’t rely on one or the other as you really need both data sets to get 100% dialed in. 
 

Long story short, if you’re doing a virtual fit and the app results don’t align with your expectations speak up. Even better, if you have data from other fits share them with your fitter. Talk a lot, listen even more, and you’ll end up with a great putter.

Has anyone been able to book this months in advance by emailing ping?  Im going to be out that way in august and want to make sure i get a spot.  I think they only post about a month or 2 in advance on the booking site.

I’m in the same boat. I might be able to go in March put they haven’t posted any March openings yet. I’m wondering when that drops because I’ll need to pounce on a Friday.

I was able to book further out in advance.  Just shoot them an email and let them know your situation.  If not they only allow up to 2 months in advance.

For those who have done it, would I be able to get large engraving like this on the sole? I want to engrave my last name and I haven’t seen anyone in this thread do a font this large yet.

I would send an email to your fitter now with a basic design of what you are looking for. I actually reached out prior to even scheduling a booking to see if they would or could build what I had in mind. I had to compromise on a few minor things but they agreed to the design and told me they were up for the challenge, so I booked the fitting. They ended up having to program their CNC to engrave what I wanted, which from what I understand is not typical, but that was their solution to building me the putter we agreed to early on. I will also add that the more custom you go, the longer it will take to get your putter. I think I was around 8 weeks where some others on this forum were around 3-5 weeks. I personally didn't mind the wait and felt the wait was worth it once I finally got my putter.

Update: My putter head *was* completed except for a minor problem.  The machine shop goofed and did a single flange sight line instead of ball width sight lines.  Alex assured me that my order has been put to the front of the line as they re-mill the head and start from scratch.  Hopefully, it will be completed and shipped out for coating by the end of next week.

Based on my fitting, I doubt they would recommend much beyond basic lettering or small designs. However, my guess is head weight would be the determining factor. Since the putters are engraved Vs stamped you’re removing material making the head lighter. I was told they can only add so much tungsten without altering performance and don’t offer stamping as that can impact performance properties too. Keep us posted.

For those interested, it sounds like this kind of engraving on the sole is highly unlikely. I’m still going to go through with the fitting as I care more about how the putter performs than how it looks but kind of a bummer. Below is the response I got from ping. 
 

“These sole engravings within PLD Custom are unlikely.  We offer a lot of custom/personalized features with PLD Custom such as initials, paint fill etc., but we at PING focus on any way we can help you Play your Best.  These sole graphics, while possible...have little bearing on PING Putter performance.  Through an authorized retailer, we offer logo, name and words laser etched on the face of our classic models.”

Made my order -- Anser D, patina finish, no lines/dots, "Bubba" grooves (though I'd call them Hovland grooves!), Pingman and Play Your Best on the sole, as well as a custom laser engraving. Black chrome shaft, which I think looks great with the patina finish. PP58 Large grip to start with.

 

The fitting was great -- it was awesome to geek out for an hour. Impressed with everything so far -- now just have to wait for the putter! Will post some pictures eventually for the curious.
