Forgiving wedges

SuperSpurs106

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have Vokey wedges (probably because lots of pro’s use them) but feel like I would benefit from more forgiving wedges.

My handicap index is 6.4 but feel like improving from 100 yards in could take me to the next level.

Any tips/opinions on more forgiving wedges? I’ve looked at Cleveland CBX2.

TIA

OK, let's see what Vokey SM9 offers:

  • LW: 62*, M grind / 60*, 5 grinds / 58* = 4 grinds
  • SW: 56*, 4 grinds / 54*, 3 grinds
  • GW: 52*, 50*: two F-grind bounces each
  • PW: 46*, 48*: one F-grind bounce each

With a fitting, you can find a forgiving Vokey mix among these 22 loft/grind combos - as long as you practice once in awhile.

Ping Glide 3.0 gives you some forgiveness in a traditional profile wedge and they also give you some grind/bounce options. Great wedges.

Forgiveness in wedges really doesnt exist. Loft is the overriding factor. I mean you could get a bigger wedge for more face area-would help with shanks. The other thing is just making sure you have correct sole grind and bounce for your swing and conditions.

I’m really liking my Sub 70 286 wedges. Considering the conditions I’ve played in so far this year they have performed very well.

Just put a CBX Zipcore 56 into play. Had the original CBX that went in and out of my bag over the last couple years. The CBX Zipcore looks smaller at address, feels better, is heavier (original CBX was on the light side) silly good out of the sand and easier to hit on full shots than my bladed wedges.

Haven't played mine yet but it's hard to not like everything about the cbx.. Clev truly improved on all the previous iterations

Another vote for the CBX.  it’s really as versatile and easy to use wedge as the old 588s were.  Might want to check out Edel too.

A leading golf club designer (can’t remember who unfortunately) is on record as saying the average blade wedge is much less forgiving than the average blade 8 iron. Now if you play blades and strike your 8 iron really well then a Vokey 56 is for you. I’m a low digit HC and I play ZX7s with 60, 54 and 50 CBX2s. I find forgiveness in wedges extremely important even though I am a better than average ball striker. Play what works for you not what works for Justin Thomas. He does practice for hours and hours. L

BTW, the wedge manufacturers, Vokey included, have been designing wedges to be more forgiving and sole grinds are only part of that equation.

When I think forgiveness in irons I think of retaining ball speed on off center hits. If this is what you’re looking for, the CBx or the set wedges from whatever iron set you’re playing is the way to go.

When I think forgiveness in wedges I’m looking more at how the sole interacts with the turf and allows for similar outcomes with slight variations to the low point. This can be achieved by going through a wedge fitting and matching your chipping and pitching technique, your typical turf conditions, and the bounce/grind of your wedge. Because of this, Vokey is one of the best options as they have the largest combination of loft/bounce/grind. Another advantage of Vokey is that once you get this fitted you can replace your wedges easily as there aren’t major changes in design from season to season.

So a quick update on the cbx zipcores.  Payed cbx2 and though good, didn't work for my eye.

Was on the fence about continue with my zx5/7 combo or going all zx5 until I can dedicate more time. Keep in mind, wedges are my strength. In fact the shorter my clubs get, the more confident I get. Took the cbx out today and within 5 shots decision was made. They slow incredibly well with the 5s and are crazy forgiving. Was more or less just swinging away and even a few chunks still flew straightish.

Will also say, they felt surprisingly good. My (previous) gamers were Cleveland full face and these didn't make me feel like I was missing anything

Another vote for the CBX Zipcore here. I bought a 56°, and when I demoed it it felt really good, I like the weight of it. It's not a miracle worker, I did lose some distance on the fat shots. The thing I really liked though, the spin. I have never spun a ball back on course, and on the sim at the store I did. I know that spin will go down on the course, but it was nice to see that a few times.

Same boat. I just replaced my CBX wedges with Sub 70 286 - 50/54/58. I liked the CBX but trying to open up those wedges seemed a lot harder because of the cavity back.

If one is looking for a forgiving wedge, I highly recommended Edison wedges.  Terry Kohler has written numerous articles on this site and the man knows what he is talking about.  I have always struggled with lob wedge shots riding up the face and coming up short.  So, after reading about his design principles, I decided to order a lob wedge and give it a try.  I have been pleasantly surprised, and now I have an Edison sand wedge and gap wedge.  All I can say is that these are great performing wedges.

Hello!

Im a beginner. (hcp 28) Been golfing for a little over a year now.

Im a salesman by trade so i immediately started searching and buying and selling clubs to make a little profit to pay for this "hobby" So i've had 4 sets of irons and even more wedges and almost no lessons. A typical stupid golfer 🙂

So after a set of old Vokeys (52,56,60) to two brand new Clevelands RTX3 (54,58) to a single CBX 56 wedge and my Wilson Staff d7 gapwedge from my set. Its just better when you are not a good ballstriker like me. Its just when i dont hit that sweetspot the ball still flies a reasonable distance and not to far offline. And the spin is much higher then on the rtx 3 wedges but that is just me being terrible. The thing im trying to say is that ive tried a couple of wedges and this CBX makes golf a little easier and most important of all my day on the course a little better.. more fun!

Ive booked some lessons! And told myself no new irons untill im at Hcp 20! Is that reasonable ?
