Modus 120 X vs TX

Recommended Posts

Hey fellow WRXers, a pre-fitting predicament I'd like some assistance with. I've got a fitting coming up at Club Champion in a couple weeks and I reached out to them to see if they stock the Modus 120 TX in their matrix for me to test and unfortunately they don't, so I've come to you looking for any experience with that shaft.

Background: Played Srixon Z-Forged irons for a little over 3 years now with the Modus 120X. I absolutely ADORE the shaft, it feels so amazing to me. The only issue is that since I got fit for these back in 2019 I've gained a bit of speed (7i comfortably 93-95mph) and I'm prone to a bit of an over-draw and ball flight can get up a touch high for my liking. I've done some testing with DG X100s and those are pretty solid in the shorter irons they're a bit laborious in the long/mid irons and honestly I'm not in love with the feel in the same way I am with the Modus. The obvious solution there might be the AMT Tour White which I'll consider with as open a mind as I can, but I've had a cup of coffee with the original AMT shafts (granted S300 flex) and didn't love them either.

So, basically what I want to know is do the TX 120s have that same feel as the Modus 120X? On paper I would guess that's just what I need: a touch heavier but not X100 heavy, a touch firmer flex to hopefully knock down flight a tad and reduce those over-draws a bit as well. If they feel just as good then I'd be ready to take it and run if I don't find anything else that works in the fitting.

I'd also be interested in testing the Modus 125X (worried it may be a bit heavy like the X100) and since it's Club Champion I'm sure they'll throw in the Oban CT and Accra i-Series but I'm not really wanting to jump up that expensive unless it's a Cinderella situation and it's a perfect fit (I do love Accra though and have them in my woods). Never gotten along with Project X so doubtful any of those would work and not super into KBS with all the drastic delays (and also never "loved" any of those either). So any of you that have tested the 120X vs 120TX how well does the TX maintain the feel of the X?

The Modus 120 is a pretty radical profile (big hinge in the middle) so if you're loving them then i'd hesitate to look anywhere else, especially since you mentioned exactly what would be expected when trying a much more mid stiff shaft like the X100 re: feeling more laborious and not liking the feel as much. I don't have any direct experience, but i've seen a mix of opinions between the X and the TX, mostly folks that think the X feels like a noodle and the TX fixes a lot of that. However there is more X use on tour than TX (guys like Casey and Finau) so it's definitely a feel thing.

One option would be hard stepping the 120x two times which is viable since you're only going up to 5i in the set. That would stiffen them up and make them slightly heavier, kind of tweener between the X and TX. Otherwise i'd build up a single iron with the TX that you can compare with the X in lieu of being able to really test them yourself.

Sounds like the 'TX' is exactly what you're looking for.  It's a little stiffer than the 'X', with the same profile characteristics.

Safest bet would be to have a club dude install a 'TX' in one club for you to use and test.  Then if it happens to be a hair stiff to your liking, you can have it pulled and soft-step it into the next club down.  Test again to see if that's ideal.  Worst case, you're only out the cost of 1 shaft and 2 installs

Yeah, that's not a bad idea. I only wish Golfworks sold the TX, I'll have to find one somewhere.

Have not hit the TX but I play the 120x and agree with the solid ideas above (double hard step an X or try one TX and have the option  to soft step). What I can say from my fittings is that the 125 is a totally different animal and if you love the 120 feel it won’t be a good option. YMMV and all that…

S3 has CPMs at 336, 322, 306. I'd say go TX

I assume that's TX, X, and S respectively? So similar difference between TX and X as X and S in that case. That's good info, thanks! I think barring finding something else I like more in the fitting I'm gonna at least test the TX because it really seems like the most logical choice given what I want out of a new shaft.

Late to the party here but I’ll share my modus 120x/tx vs dg x100/amt white x100 as I played the whack-a-mole with shafts in my t100 irons.  Started with amt white s400 as that’s what was available. Wet noodles, took them out day 1.  Went to TI x100, which is what were in my previous irons. Stable, solid, but a bit laborious in the long irons as you mentioned, but also the 9 iron/wedge shafts feel like rebar to me. (More on that later).  Next I tried a modus 120x in my 3 iron, 7 iron and wedge.  3 iron was auto pilot but I generally hit long irons better than most. Not laborious like the TI x100.  7 iron was fine but apexed around 140’ which was just obscene for a 92ish swing speed. And wedge was fine as I never take full gas wedge shafts.  I liked the feel but wanted to bring launch and spin down so I tracked down some tx and tried soft stepping them 1 time. Feel was solid but stiffer than x100 and miles stiffer than 120x. Like I couldn’t believe me they were the same line of shafts.  Lunch was low in a good way, brought my apex down to 110’ or so which was a perfect window for me but then spin went off the planet with my lifelong ball of a pro v1. I was pulling 7 irons back 30’ off greens on par 3s. 9 irons were even worse. Like it was impossible to hit a back pin with anything but a wedge.  So then I got this hair brained idea to get some amt white x100 and hard step them to the 7 iron and then use 8 iron shafts for the 7, 8, 9 and P and holy cow it’s amazing. The AMT are lighter in the long irons as you know so hard stepping the 3-7 gives them a little more heft and stability in the tip and then the 8 iron shaft is just a touch softer than the 9/w shaft which softens that rebar feel just enough to be tolerable as I also play an dg 8 iron shaft in my gap wedge and s400 in sw/lw.

I was fitted at club champion almost two years ago and they put me into oban ct125 as you anticipate they will push you towards. I found the frankenstiened amt set I put together to feel very similar to the Oban 125x.

Bottom line, If you really like the 120x I’d hard step 1x and see what that gets you. The TX is a different animal.

TX plays like a board compared to X in the 120. Almost to the point of them not feeling like the same shaft. If the X is good enough for Stenson, it can handle anyone's load on the downswing. I would hardstep 120x before going to TX.

Sorry to revive. How is the 125 different? I hate a low-mid hinge, although I love some of the Nippon line (SPB, 1050GH). NOT the Modus3, to date. Thx for any info!

Pretty different profiles. 125 are pretty linear and 120 has a big soft hinge in the mid of the shaft.

Yes, but it wasn't clear whether the 120 TX had that same big soft hinge.

CK Pro White, for example, is very different X vs TX.

Oh i see. TX is the same as X. It doesnt display that flex on there but I have swung the TX before and its just a heavier variant of the X being at ~126g.

generally speaking those quirks of the TX being a totally different profile than other flexes in the line tend to be graphite wood shafts. There is no iron shaft that has a completely different profile than the other flexes in the model line. The different flexes will shift up and down but will have a similar shape. You would never have a stiff flex have a soft handle and the TX have a super stiff handle. There is already too much confusion in shaft profiles in general

The 120tx will still have that hinge but it’s much less apparent.  I play 1 inch over length and the 120 tx plays to me much like a smoother x100 with more sense of where the club head is.

the 125x remind me much more of a kbs tour x flex.

Interesting. The KBS Tour always had a kicky tip, in my hands. The 125 looks like it would feel more like a C-Taper, or X100. Pretty straight linear.

The 125 doesn’t have that kicky tip, but does feel stiffer in the handle like a kbs tour to me.  Does not feel as hingy at your hands like an x100.

I play X100, loved the 125x and thought they gave me similar flight and spin with better feel. The 120x I load to hard for and I balloon and hook them. 120tx was not too bad, but probably not for me.

CWebb's post above show the profile data, from the Wishon database.  Comparing the 120TX to DG, it's actually not all that much stiffer than S400.

In the long Nippon thread that's floating around, someone asked Nippon directly, to help clear up the noise.  Their response was that 120TX was a similar shaft and profile, but 11 cycles stiffer than 120X.
