Standard length of 370 cut graphite shafts

Is there a standard measurement of cut graphite shafts before assembly?  I'm building a set 4-PW. They are 370  diameter and I have already  trimmed the tips.  Appreciate any input!

There is no standard length.  Dry fit the shafts, measure club length using a club length ruler, then butt cut to your preferred playing length.

I’ll add to the last post. There’s no standard length and there’s no standard to measuring either. Some companies measure with out the grip on.

Club assembly isn't an exact process. As I see it done, it is a try and fit procedure.

 

A machine lathe could be used to precisely turn down shafts to a particular diameter instead of a belt sander, but I've never heard anyone doing that.

 

A lathe can also be used to enlarge holes as well.  It requires more skill to set things up properly.

I bought the specially  shaped cutting tool needed to enlarge a hole from the inside.  Someone with more skill could make one with some tool steel and a bench grinder.

 

I also have a milling machine.  The motor has bearings that allow it to withstand side to side forces as well as up/down forces (relative to a drill motor that is a poor relative).

 I recently went to graphite shafts in my irons. Golfworks graphite irons are ½" longer than their steel shafted irons for swingweight purposes. I have always played my irons +1". With graphites, I play +½" which gives me the same overall length i had with steel shafted irons.

Which is wrong. Playing length should have priority over swingweight, and there are other methods to increase swingweight.

Yeah but....

For a lot of years OEMs made the graphite shafted irons a 1/2" longer for that reason.

Yes it is.  Just because the individual specs can vary between different heads or that there are multiple methods for measuring - doesn't change how exact the process is or can be.

Because it's overkill and a waste of time.   The shafts are already manufactured to the required size.   The preparation by the builder only needs to either remove the paint (for graphite) or chrome (steel) to prepare the shaft for gluing.

Not only is it wrong but it's not even necessary for swing weight purposes for a large percentage of modern graphite iron shafts.   For the most part, the shaft designers are already moving shaft balance points to compensate for the lower contribution of the lighter shafts.

Because it was easier (or cheaper) for the factory assembly process - not because it was better for the customer.   And the fact that vast majority of them are no longer doing it any more should be a good indication that it was never really a good idea in the first place.

I used to build to 37.75" 5 iron length progression, but changed to 38" because it helps with graphite swingweight.  Playing length is arbitrary these days anyway, with lofts and shaft lengths varying all over the place among the various OEM's.  Just as long as your chosen length progression starts with some wedges that work for you, the length of the other clubs in the set don't matter all that much.

I play all my graphite shafted irons at equivalent steel shaft length and don’t worry about swing weight.
