Cash tipping problem

Recommended Posts

I use the club storage service at our club and they do a good job of cleaning my clubs.  When I return my clubs to the rack I put a $5 or $10 bill on the bag, generally sticking out of the pocket.  I frequently carry cash but yesterday found myself with twenty dollar bills and no smaller change.  I walked into the pro shop to see if they could break a $20 but they went cashless.  Prefer not to ask the bag attendant to break a twenty but I guess I could.  They are frequently teenagers on the weekend.  I do not think many people tip at my club.  I could use Venmo, but that means tracking down the attendant.  Perhaps that is the solution.

Thoughts?

As a member of a non-tipping community I need to ask: do those guys get any wages for what they do? I suppose you pay an annual fee for the storage so someone gets the money. Thus the remaining question is how will it be distributed.

I know tipping is one of the backbones of USA but from my point of view it is also a backbone of not paying income taxes in areas they are supposed to be payed. From my point of view it is simply bizarre someone gets tipped for what s/he is supposed to do and already gets payed for it. In my country it is customary to tip for a service beyond normal standards but for an average job done? No way.

Just my thoughts, I know many of you disagree with me but so be it.

I disagree on only one point. In this country, staff normally get paid.  😉

Although the US way is certainly becoming the norm.

But I believe that hospitality staff are actually taxed on their estimated income from tips.

The concept behind tipping is that people get rewarded for doing their job well and get instant feedback when they are not.

Our bag room staff make an hourly wage and also make income from the tips. Those that go beyond - service with a smile, making sure all clubs are well cleaned, etc. do better than those that do enough to get the job done but no more. Tipping gives me a chance to give direct feedback and reward the service I appreciate.

It was explained to us by a server at a restaurant that her employer needed to keep a record of her sales, and that there was a number derived based on a percentage of that that she needed to claim on income taxes.

Say I want to tip the club attendant $5, but I only have a $20. I just hand him the $20 and say something like  "give me back $15 please, the rest is for you" Unless you're in the first group to come off the course in the morning, the attendants at the club I belong to that has them usually have a wad of small bills to make change with.

I don't leave money laying on my bag for them, as it is too easy for it to blow away or some unintended recipient to swipe it.

Yes, that is the concept elsewhere but in USA it seems that tipping is expected always. Let me give an example.

A friend of mine took a holiday in Mexico a few years back. It was an all-inclusive hotel so all the food and drinks were already paid for. Also it was included to have drinks brought to you at the pool. Despite of this the guests from USA tipped the waiters up to 20 dollars per drink for something the guests had already paid for and for what the waiters already got their salary. I find that utterly strange.

Oh, one more thing, When I go to a restaurant I expect good service and I do not tip for that because that is what I and all the other customers expect. I tip if the service is better than expected and only then. Not tipping does not mean the personnel did not do their job well, it just means they did what was expected.

Truly first world problems here... 🤣

I have to admit my first thought was, "Maybe just go play at a public course and schlep your own stuff back and forth from your car".

But my second thought was, "That would be nasty, better not say it".

My impression from my relatively few (10) visits to the USA is that the standard rates of pay in the hospitality industry are significantly lower than the UK's minimum hourly wage. Not sure how the UK compares with the EU countries minimum wage but I believe Finland doesn't have such legislation at present.

I remember years ago working at a high end resort in the cart center. We picked the bags and players up in the parking lot and also cleaned the clubs after play and took them back to their vehicles or ferry line. Anytime we heard an English accent, we knew that no tip would be forthcoming so a lot of them ended up hauling their uncleaned clubs back to their vehicles. Just the way it was after being "stiffed" by them numerous times.

I later worked for an Irish company where most were Irish, English or Scottish.  They could not get their heads around tipping either. They finally got to asking me if they should and how much. Just different cultures in that aspect. 😲

On your question if you want to just tip them $5, ask for change back. They will not have any problem with that. And if they don't have change then tell them you will catch them next time. Happens every day where I work.

I’m guessing a lot of people in the US agree with you but it’s a cultural thing. There are a handful of restaurants in a select few cities that have increased all their prices to pay employees more and have outlawed tipping but those are the exception. Restaurants and bars love it because the customers are now responsible for paying the employees and the companies are able to pay them less. I live in a large Midwestern city and servers and bartenders generally make $2.13 an hour and rely on tips. I’m actually really 100% sure how it’s legal because minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.

As for the employees in the bag room and running carts, most of the ones I know are making 8-10 bucks an hour and the perks are free golf and food while on the clock.
