putting mat or carpet

I currently practise my putting on a nice bit of carpet it rolls true and at a good speed, would a putting mat be of any benefit? Other than having lines marked on them do they help?

I suspect that it probably depends on what you are practicing during your putting.

If you are working on mechanics, etc then I suppose that carpet is probably just fine. If you were working on start lines, etc, then I would go for a putting mat. I have my PuttOut mat always out in what was the golf room (now the home office - thanks Covid!!) and I like to pop my mirror and gate down as well. It's maybe just the carpets in my house but I wouldn't be able to do that and be sure that I was doing what was needed on just the carpet.

I always found it really hard to roll mats out and keep them flat.

Plus, when you put the mat down, you're still subject to the slope of the floor.

I'd probably rather get a carpet to lay down than a putting mat TBH. A good, heavy carpet can be found with straight lines, too.

I have a room with really old, worn down carpet and it's perfect IMHO.

My home putting practice consists solely of rolling the ball down one of THESE and basically using a Perfect Practice mat as a ball return.

I think the difference between carpet and a mat would be the speed, depending on the rating of the carpet. I believe the putting mats are comparable to an 11 on the stimp meter (so they advertise) and this can be better if you want to practise your pace.

the finer and shorter the carpet, the more comparable it would be to a green. I haven't experienced a house with carpets for over 15 years, so the only thing that pops into my mind if more like putting out the rough.

I use a mat since the floors around me are all tiled / marble due to the heat.

I don't honestly look the the lines or care for them on my putting mat, as you can clearly see how straight the ball is going and watch it roll end over end is , for me, good enough. I also don't use the gates, or any of these tools they often provide.

As someone mentioned, the mat still follows the natural curve of your floor. If you don't have an even under surface, then you won't hit a straight putt anyway.

The workaround to get it more flat is to "iron it out" with your feet. just don't give yourself a burn on bare feet 😉 alternatively, just give it a vacuum in the forward direction (Pushing it) to both clean it and to flatten it out at the same time.

I have a 12'x3' Birdie Ball mat 10/11 ( 10 in one direction, 11 in the other) stimp. Speeds vary from 9/10, 10/11 & 11/13. I got that size so I could rotate it till the putts would roll straight. BTW, ALL houses are un-level a slight amount. I have the 11 going downhill and the 10 going up hill, so they are slightly faster & slower respectively. I add painters tape if I need alignment aids. I practice about an hour each night mostly focusing on alignment & stroke. It HAS made a difference, for the better, in my putting. It's been a good investment for me.

Is that May thick enough to use over carpet or is it really only useful on hardwood or concrete?

It would depend on the type of carpet. They make two thicknesses, 1/2" and 1". If going over carpet, I would go with the 1" just to help it stay flat. I have the 1/2" and when I placed it over the cheap vinyl flooring in my basement, you could see the ridges on the putting surface. I moved it upstairs to the hardwood and it is flat. On carpet, I would make sure the carpet was completely flat or you will have curve to your putts.

I like the well putt mats - really thoughtfully designed with length and speed options.  I use a small dumbbell or two to keep it flat on the ground.

I have a Birdie Ball matt. It's what they call "municipal course" speed, but I think it's a lot faster than that lol. It's 12 feet long. Works great. The dog didn't s*** on it... yet....
