PXG 0317 CB Irons

Ok here’s my deal, I currently playing to a 7 hcp and had gen 6 0311P’s across the board in my bag for a while.   For my longer irons the clubs are amazing.  Distance feel dispersion all spot on.  Where I was getting into trouble was my shorter irons when attacking the greens.  I found for me personally, the shorter irons in 0311, 7-PW, although I had zero issues making the greens they were almost too hot for me and many times, especially on those downhill lie shots to green, unless I really choked down on club, shortened, slowed my swing down, I was just flying greens and the balls weren’t sticking.  Then they released 0317 CB.  For me, I like the feel of 0317 better, it’s softer, dunno just feels incredibly good.  Ball flight was a little higher but more spin and now my attack shots on greens are sticking like glue.  I also found little or no loss in distance.   So, in end what I realized, I didn’t need a full bag of 0311P’s,  I simply combo’d 2 long irons in 0311P and the rest are all CB.  Couldn’t be more happy.  The guys at my PXG store easily had my CB’s bent properly to blend in with my 0311.  I have the best of both worlds now.  Distance, forgiveness in my long irons off the deck and pin point accuracy, workability and feel in my shorter irons in the CB’s.

I was just fit into the 0311P and I currently play combo Zx5 4-6, ZX7 7-PW. I was worried about short irons with the P and debated going 0317 there. What makes the 0317 better? Distance control or dispersion or both?

I've played the original Zx7s the last two years.  I ordered the Gen3 P this spring and returned them bc they were quite a bit bigger at address than the Zx7s.  I am now in 6-P in the CB and 4-5i in the Gen5 T.  The CBs are perfect and honestly my favorite set I've ever owned.

Curious since you split it that way how much more forgiving the Gen 5 T’s are than the 0317 CB.

I could be in a full set of CB.  I only ordered up to 6i in the CB bc I was a little worried they may be too much to handle, and it has been the opposite.   I found a great deal on the 4i-5i Ts, so I am going to stick with it for now.  I may order the 5i CB at some point.

Thanks… so forgiveness/playability wise both are in line with the ZX7 then?

I am hitting them better than my Zx7, which is saying a lot, bc I played the Zx7s for some time.  I may dare to say the CBs are a touch more forgiving for me, but they are super close.  I like the look of the CBs better down by the ball.  CBs have been super forgiving on thin and toe shots for me.

Well I hit them at the fitting and the CB was much better for me than the T. The issue was mishits which the P was still a bit better than the 0317. I just hate only using a 7 iron because of this as I may want the 0317 from 8-PW

My TXG built babies came in today. Off to test them, but here are a few pics and comparison to the Srixon ZX 5s.

Compared to the ZX5 the CBs have a much narrower sole, shaper toe, and slightly shorter blade length. The top line is pretty darn close, which I like…find it more confidence inspiring compared to something like a T100.

Those look great!  Very interested to hear your reports on how they compare to the zx5, especially in the longer irons.  From what the earlier poster said maybe they fit right between the zx5 and zx7’s?

I ordered the first week of June. Delivery took 7 agonizing weeks.

I did not need to read that, end of June I ordered. The heads have been there for 2 weeks according to my PXG order.

I have a golf trip I'm planning in August and I want these for that trip. I hope it's sooner.

I also have to order a 3W but may order that directly from the manufacturer since they say a week.

I hope so I can only blame my current irons so much longer for bad swings 😂

I just finished my initial test.

The CBs look great, feel great, and are ultra consistent. Dispersion is tight, and best off all my long left is mitigated. Spin stays in a consistent window and long left is 5-10 yards and catches the green vs upwards of 25 yards long with the ZX5s.

The irons are a full 1-1.5 clubs short of the ZX5s which are 2* weak. Really, that’s the only difference I notice. Bad shots are bad shots regardless of the club, one is simply longer. Good shots feel great with both sets. If I built a combo set I’d personally split the set at the 7 iron. I’m a poor long iron player so a bit more forgiveness in the 4-6 wouldn’t hurt.

So far so good. Tomorrow I’ll do a gapping session and share the results.

Below is a comparison of the 4 irons. The ZX5s are easier to strike and a bit hotter and lower spin. The CBs had much tighter dispersion. I’d say the CBs are more comparable to the ZX7s than they ZX5s.

47 descent is good with both. I like the extra spin with the ZX5 but not the extra dispersion. Same shaft?

Unless I’m looking at it wrong the extra spin was with the 0317 CB.  I’m actually really impressed with how it stacked up to the ZX5.  Ball speed was close, spun a touch more but it blew the zx5 away with dispersion.

Thank you for taking the time to post this.  Just looking at the #s the CBs held their own in ball speed far better than I expected, and I’m shocked to see the front to back dispersion better with it than the ZX5 (assuming I’m reading that right with the range of distance being front to back dispersion).  I figured the extra forgiveness of the ZX5 would win in that area.   Which makes me wonder, is there any chance the forgiveness difference is more in feel than performance where the CBs provide more feedback so you feel the misses more but don’t penalize you as bad as you expect?

You are correct. The CB spun slightly more with much tighter dispersion.

The front to back dispersion was great. I flushed one with the ZX5 that went further than expected, which is fun in the sim, but not on the course. The CBs were consistent from swing to swing.

I’ll post a GW, 8i, 5i comparison later today. You do feel the CBs more, but they are not harsh. A bad shot doesn’t sting your hands like some other player irons.

Thank you so much for these breakdowns and comparisons.   I’m recovering from elbow surgery and won’t be released to swing until November, so I’m living vicariously through you guys that can test these.  To this date the best irons I’ve played with graphite shafts was the i200s w/ steelfiber i95 shafts and I’m seriously debating just ordering these 0317 cbs with the exact specs of those i200s vs going to get fit and testing the new Axiom’s and other graphite shafts.    Getting fit is probably the logical thing but the injury happened April 2022 and I haven’t played since then so I don’t know how patient I’ll be waiting to hit the course when I’m cleared!

Was tired, meant to post that I like the extra cb spin but the extra 7 yards carry on the zx5 on paper looks good. However, if it was a long left nuke that doesn’t mean much. What I love about my current irons (JDM MP20 MMC) is that the long left is only 5-10 long and the short right is only 5 short. With the MBs previously I found the long left was still at least 10 long but the short right was always much shorter. It looks like those CBs are in the +/- 5-10 yard range which is what we want. Clubs should not “always be pin high” as we want the draw to go slightly further and the fade to spin up and be slightly shorter. Thats part of what gives us distance control on tweener yardages. I’d be taking the CB all day with those numbers. Given the spin and descent angle you have a little room to bend the 4i a touch stronger because that spin will be higher outdoors. I really like going 22-26-30-34-38-42-46 on my iron lofts.

Below is a 7i vs ZX5 7i comparison. The ZX5 is 2* stronger so differences are likely loft related. With that said, dispersion and ball flight are both more consistent with the CB. I didn’t notice any difference in forgiveness. The biggest difference isn’t really between the clubs themselves, it’s how you want to set up & gap your bag.
