Trouble Choosing: ZX5 vs ZX7

Find out which sole works best for you. IMO turf interaction is more important than ball speed retention on off center hits. Zx5 look great for at address for what they are, but have very wide sole.

I am a +1.2 at the moment.  Just got my ZX5 4-5 and ZX7 6-9.  I transition to a Vokey 46 degree PW.  Great set!

Do you live in SoCal? My daughter just transferred to SDSU and play on their lax team. Will be looking for games when I swing out to the West Coast on weekends this spring to watch her play (I play out of Bethpage).

I am a 3.8 index and got fitted last spring for new irons. Hit both the ZX5 and ZX7 along with a few other brands players clubs and ended up with the ZX5's. I didn't notice any real difference between the 2 Srixon clubs besides a bit thinner sole on the 7, and ultimately decided I'll take forgiveness every day over looks. I am not out to impress anyone that looks into my bag, I can hold my own without looking like a pro.

A combo set with 5 series on the longer clubs and 7 series from 7 iron to PW would work great and they look enough alike that they also look great in the bag.    I agree with the others that the 7 AW is awful (and I'll add extremely unforgiving).   Just throw a Cleveland CBX gap in there instead.

Been to the range for a few sessions since picking up my new ZX7 9 iron (SFi110) to compare against new ZX5 7 iron (SFI95).    Both are MKII.   Overall, I have been very happy with SF110R which are perfect for overlength iron set (great feedback a couple months ago, thx all!)   I tried the SFi95 to see if it would be a good match in longer/mid irons.  SW is a couple points lower.   Originally, I was going to go with ZX5 in 6I-8I and ZX7 in 9-AW.   I'm loving the ZX7 9ron.  Great turf interaction and overall weighting is perfect for me.   Was on the fence about 8 iron so glad I am doing this trial run.   Thinking i'll go ZX7 for 8 iron with SFi110 and possibly swap out ZX5 from SFi95 to SFi110.  Overall, new all MKII are really good!

Just received a set of MKII's.

I did not care for the ZX5's mainly due to not being able to keep the flight down as well and the longer irons were screwing up some gapping I had at the top of the bag.

I don't have trouble hitting a 5 iron and don't use a 4 so a combo wasn't really needed.

Went ZX7 5-W and a 3 iron/20* utility iron.

Use SM9's in 50/54/58.

Weather is lousy here so have some time until real world testing but been very happy so far with some sim time.

Im a 4.7 index and just bought a triple combo set in the MKII's.

4-5 in zx4 (standard loft)

6-8 in zx5 (bent 1 degree strong)

9-pw zx7 (bent 2 degree strong)

just ordered from DD today. Cant wait till they come in!

Cool set up, curious what lofts your wedge set up will be?

I think we all should talk to Shane Lowry. He’s looking for a caddy right now you know. And if any of us were his caddy, we’d see even Open champion Shane Lowry plays the ZX5 in 4 and 5 iron and ZX7 6-P.

That right there tells me I should go full set ZX5, or even ZX4/ZX5 combo. Last thing I want is to go to Ireland, run into Shane Lowry at Lahinch or Portmarnock, and he’s got a more forgiving set than I do. Not a good look. He’ll be drinking out of his Claret Jug and mocking me.

Great perspective and such practical advice.

Time to dump my RTW Wedges for CBX wedges.

Empty my Z Star XV balls for some Soft Feel and Noodles.

Great thread. I'm in the market and hit some ZX5's the other night during an indoor league. I was very impressed with the feel, distance (indoors) and spin. I'm coming from gen1 PXG 0311s and ready to move on from Bob. Currently a 4.4 and looking to either do all ZX5's or a combo. Wedges are all RTX. I feel like they'd feel right at home in the bag. Cheers.

Had the older zx7s, just got the zx5 mk2 5-pw with modus 120. These are excellent and don’t feel clicky off center strikes.

soles are thicker but I have not noticed during play.

can’t ask for more from this 9 handicapper.

Get the original zx7 and save money….look and play better than mk ii

Other than paint fill, they look almost the same. I have had marginal increase in performance in the MK 2, the original zx7 has performed well for me.

I am thinking about this combo:

ZX4 - 4 iron 21*

ZX5 - 5 iron 24*

ZX7 - 6-AW 28*, 32*, 36*, 41*, 46*, 51*

Without having to do any bending or anything the lofts seem to match pretty well here.  The ZX4 4 iron is plenty long and I would not have to carry a 5 wood, I can probably hit that 4 iron just as long and better.  I prefer long irons over any kind of wood/hybrid.

any thoughts?

I had posted in another ZX7 listing. I went:

ZX4 - 4 iron standard loft

ZX5 - 5 and 6 iron standard loft

ZX7 - 7-pw standard loft except pw is at 45 degrees to go with my 3 Edel wedge lofts of 50,54,58

ZX4 felt soft like ZX7. ZX5 was a little more clicky but not as bad. ZX7 ball heights were 100-110 feet. ZX5 ball height was 90-100 feet and ZX4 was 85 feet. I had the OG same combo set but went ZX5 4-6 and I will say this MKII is more forgiving.

Thanks. The grips are very tacky. I would say more than Iomic but not as close to leather grips. My hands sweat so I need that tackiness

love the tackiness as well and cant find anything that i love. I tried the winn but they wear out fast and are awful in the rain. Currently have the Lamkin Sonar plus. Need an upgrade

If you want your 4 iron to go the distance of a “set” 4 iron you might consider the ZX utility at 23 degrees.

I have the ZX7 5 iron at 25 and the 4/23 utility. Works well

So I might be a little too good if a ballstriker to add opinion here. I play 785 5-pw and either a u65 4 hybrid or a 4 rescue depending what I need.

I’ve done some good work with Zx5 5&6 (a portion of my bag I really fiddle with) from recent memory I’ve had cobra one length there

taylormade 760 there

currently 785 still

where the 7 shines is a bit more is from rough. I feel they don’t get caught in rough as easily and you can kinda hit a few other shots with them.

i also saw that I would get some poofers with the 5 with good contact where the ball just straight up doesn’t go.

i came from apex pro 16’s and finally wore my last set out of those so had to change.

i would say the 7’s can fit most decent strikers

I would have to agree. The 7 is good if you are decent at striking the ball. I like my 5s and they go far but the 7s feel and sound better and it’s noticeable by a large margin.
