Rory's driver length 45 not 44, right?

Recommended Posts

So they are saying Rory's driver is 44" but this report last year https://golf.com/gear/drivers/rory-mcilroy-taylormade-sim2-driver-setup/ says he was playing his driver at 45.5" a number I've seen many times over the last 7 or 8 years. He said he took a half inch off, so that would be 45" right?

This was a build here at 45 1/16. Rory always played 44.5" shaft, playing length 45.5". His playing length now is 45" but shaft is 44". Waiting on Trottie verfying this

“Driver was good. Driver was really good. I'm much happier with where I am there,” said McIlroy. “Obviously off the tee is such an important part of the game for me.

“I knew I just needed to change it up a bit going back to a driver length that I'm a little more comfortable with. But the thing is, going to 44 inch driver with the previous shaft I was using I was too stiff and I couldn't spin it.

“I needed to go to a slightly softer shaft and I can hit more shots with it and feel a bit more comfortable sort of playability-wise. I feel like I can hit a few more shots with it. It sort of hangs in there a little bit for me.

This says 44 inch length, which would be down 1 inch from his prior 45 inch (cut) length.  It seems to be saying he's playing 44 inches cut, which is 44 1/8 with a grip.

What doesn't make sense is him saying the old shaft is too stiff at 44".  Shafts should get weaker if you butt trim an inch and play them at the same swing weight.  Maybe just the low spin of the black is more pronounced at shorter length.

44" with 60 gram shaft seems weird, but maybe not, I am not a builder or fitter. TM standard build is 45.75 so to cut it down by 1.75" would theoretically need a ton of weight to be added to the head.

Saw some highlights of him hitting some bombs in the WGC yesterday, so seems to be working.

It was tipped an inch already.  What I'm saying is the same shaft butt trimmed an inch is going to play weaker when the length is shorter and the swingweight is the same- which means the head is heavier.

Same reason why the same shaft plays weaker in a 3 wood than a driver if they are tipped the same.

It’s not a 60g shaft. TR Blue 6x is like 68-69g raw. Standard length retail build heads are a little lighter than really what should be “standard”. 45” playing length with 68-69g raw shaft won’t have any probably getting D3-D5 with just a few grams of melt.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
