Fishing rod in the golf bag?

Mych

Recommended Posts

Silly idea, but I was going down my YouTube fishing rabbit hole and ran across some videos about the zebco dock demon 30" rod.

I've thought about carrying a telescoping rod before, but they're a PITA to extend and put away. I'm thinking about getting a golf club sleeve (34") and using it to protect a dock demon rigged up with a compact reel and a lure, and just having it handy for a quick cast or two before/after the round or when it gets insanely slow.

Thoughts?

Just how slow does it get where you play🤣

I think getting a rod out on the course and casting your line into the nearby pond is an excellent way of letting people know what you think about the pace of play.

I played a charity scramble 2 weeks ago where we waited 30 minutes on a tee box. When we drove up there were 3 groups on the hole and 3 waiting to tee off. 6+ hours.

Normally, 4 hrs but there are a few spots where it tends to crawl depending on the time of day.

My buddy bought a dock demon as a joke, then proceeded to catch, back to back, a 10# and 22# catfish off the stupid thing, so I can confirm they work. I’ve never stuck a rod and reel *in* my golf bag, but scouting ponds while playing and allegedly sneaking back onto the course later that night to fish is a different matter entirely lol

30 minutes wait? Yeah, get your rod and line out!

I've played some pretty slow rounds and can understand the desire to kill time more effectively, I'm just not sure there's much worth catching in the courses around me.

Love golf and love fishing, but at the same time?

Fishing after play, definitely. Just ask Boo Weekley. During play, can’t say I’d do that.

I'm not sure how I'd feel if I saw a guy in the group ahead of me stopping to fish during a slow play day at the course.

I mean if you're waiting so long you have time to fish - you should find a new course, not a new hobby to do on the course. I dont think theres really any way you can gracefully transition from fishing back to the teebox without wasting time.

I am a huge fisherman and I grew up fishing all my life but IMO it's largely disrespectful to keep a rod in your bag on the golf course. Basically saying you're unserious from the start about golf.

Not to mention most courses dont allow fishing on their grounds but YMMV I guess. Just IMO.

I'll say that's probably the longest I've ever had to wait at any tee box other than to start a round, or if a course is letting people start on #10 and screwing up the flow. My company was paying for us to play the tournament, so I didn't have much choice but to sit right next to that beautiful pond and wait. 🙂

At that point it really wouldn't have mattered if I caught anything. The wait was brutal.

If it was slowing up the pace of play I would lose my mind.  If it wasn’t effecting pace of play I would find it hilarious.

True, but as we all know - perception is reality. If I'm standing on the tee waiting and I see a guy casting his fishing pole instead of getting himself ready to hit his ball when the green in front of him does clear, it looks to me like he's not playing "ready golf". So I'd be inclined to start placing some of the slowness blame on him and his group.

And yes, before you ask, I really am fun at parties.

Not in my golf bag, but when we lived in Montana, I often played a morning round at Madison Meadows and then drove over to the Madison River.
