The perfect hybrid search

Lftygolfnut

Recommended Posts

I need some help finding a hybrid that suits my need for a quieter, softer feel that is still mid spin and has a generous enough face for tee shots.

visually I prefer a mid size fairway wood style shape, not iron like or overly large.

Taylormade makes closest to what I want but they have way too shallow of a face that I don’t do well with tee shots. Very soft and explosive feeling though.

anyone have any recommendations?

I’ve also tried Callaway, Ping, Srixon.

ETA. Decided to stick with my ZX hybrid. It does everything I need. I’ve finally gotten to the point that I’m sick of trying out new clubs. Lol

I currently have a Ping G25 in the 20*, Regular flex TFC shaft.  I also have the Cleveland Halo, 22* and 25*, the original halo, not the launchers or the XLs, or Hi-bores; the original blue/chrome ones that came out about 20 years ago.  The Ping and "old" Cleveland Halo are both very, very solid for me.  Well-struck shots are high, straight, and true.

My question has been whether or not, or maybe how, the newer hybrids would compare to these "old" ones.  Even the Ping G25 is, what, over 10 years old now?  What am I missing by keeping the old one?.  I hit the old Cleveland Halo just fine.

What TM hybrids do you feel have a shallow face? I like my Stealth 19* and hate shallow face woods and hybrids.

One of my favorite hybrids in my bag is my Adams A12 OS 17 Degree Hybrid. I have it shafted Regular for more kick.

The range in distance for that sucker is pretty big because the flex allows me more variance. I am NEVER replacing that club. Just yesterday, I felt like I was hardly working and boy that ball FLEW.

Ya ya... I know... Old... outdated... defunct.... 😄

Nice, my bro-in-law has Adams and refuses to use anything else.  He's trying to convince me to grab them for cheap if/when I find them out in the wild.  I also played in a recent round of golf with a guy that was paired up with me.  He was using the A12 off the tee on many holes.  Sounded like a rifle when he hit it, that distinct "snap" sound.

Tried that one. Good hybrid but it’s tingy and low spin.

I think it sounds great, very stable and doesn't hook. I can easily hold a green with it, just have to hit down on it. The Apex UW is also great. Maybe try a different shaft though if you need spin.

Not to deviate, but the Apex UW is the GOAT. compact but deep faced, the 19* has replaced my fairway. If I could get my hands on a 23* it would be game over! Maybe try the 21*

For the prices they are charging for those, they better be the GOAT.

CPO sells them cheap. Wait for the next fairways sale. They were just like $150 for like new which sometimes comes in wrapper.

Those are for the 17, 29, and 21. The 23* is tour only and notoriously hard to find, usually $400+ easily for the head alone.

If you have not tried the Cleveland Halo Hy-Wood... it certainly might be worth a look. It really is stupid good as a long hybrid and a very forgiving option off the turf and tee.

THanks for the tip, I would love to check this out.  My "old" original halos are still awesome, so this must be good as well.

Tour Edge C721 is my fav mini-fairway style hybrid. So stable and so long and easy to launch.

I second this.  C721 is the oldest club in the bag and don't think about changing.  The new E version is the same size as the C721.  The new C series is more like a iron.

Mizuno ST-Z 230 looks very aesthetic and ticks all the boxes.  I had a TSR3 and think this is better.  Very forgiving and hot

I am actually thinking of trying the Mizuno ST-Z 230, as a replacement for my 7 wood.  They look really nice, and reviews have been pretty positive.  Might even consider the  JPX923 Fli-Hi, but I understand it is draw biased, which a no-go for me.

If you don't go titleist for a hybrid then you're making a mistake. Their hosel is the best for hybrids. Just choose what head you want.

Can I play a Titleist if I'm an average to below average player? I've always thought that Titleist is only for really good players or tour players?

Callaway has a pretty good system too. I've always liked the performance of their hybrids.  The TSR3 weight for heel to toe adjustability was very functional.  I prefer the stability of the Mizuno though as that head (once you get your loft and lie right) is crazy consistent across the face.  Titleist hybrids went a little hooky on that toe miss.

I'm really wanting to try the Mizuno's, but they're so expensive.  Price is a factor for me as well, so I'm probably going to have to go with one that is several years old
