Ideal Iron for the following situation:

DocRJL

Recommended Posts

What club would provide somewhat of a "player" look, offers some forgiveness / tech yet still has some mild playability, has a narrow sole / lower bounce?  For reference I tend to be a bit of a picker / sweeper, some early extender tendencies yet still a solid player. Play off average Midwest conditions. I don't do well with high camber in the sole or higher bounce irons.

I have been told what I am looking for is between Mizuno JPX 923 Forged.  I will also try out Titleist T200 and Callaway Apex Pro or regular Apex.

Any other ideas out there?

Srixon ZX5 or ZX7, or a combo set. The ZX5 are a little thicker, but don't look much different at address IMO. Plenty of forgiveness in both models. I am more of a digger, so the V sole works well for me.

Not if he’s a picker…

I don’t think T200 really fits that bill. While I do think they’d be good in Midwest turf, I think they are relatively higher bounce and higher camber.

Even doubly so with Callaway Apex (regular Apex). Those soles do NOT want to get into the ground. I like higher bounce and Apex soles are too much for me.  Pretty thick top line too.

I do think you should consider Apex Pro 24 though. While they do have some camber, the soles are a bit thinner to offset that.

Maybe you’d get along with T150. Definitely sharper soles than T200. T150 sole shape is ok for me on firm turf, but probably too diggy in Midwest turf for me. Maybe better for you. Folks say T150 are really good for thin strikes.

I would say that you are on the right path with the JPX 923 forged.  Great set, long and mid irons flow into the short scoring irons nicely.

As someone who fits the bill on your needs, no ones asked the most important question yet.

Do you need to hit it higher or lower?

For me, I am always fighting the battle of wanting the help a Players Distance iron can give, and the benefit of playing with more loft throughout the set to maintain height and spin.

I de-loft slightly, launch on a 7 iron for me is 20-23* and tend to have a high ball flight. I would like something that gives all the perks you mentioned but a little lower flight. I am sure that a lot of that comes down to shaft.

He's a sweeper and doesn't like much bounce. 🤣

I do feel the 0317CBs would be a good set to at least try.

Given what you say I get the sense the JPX 923s are a recommendation based on the shape of the sole. That would seem to be more important than the bounce angle on an iron (which generally tends to be fairly consistent among the various manufacturers as it is (unicorns excluded)).

When comparing the 317s to the 923s, the sole shape is a little sharper on the 317s. I wouldn't say they're a no go for a picker, yet the 923s may be a marginally better fit (which can be more or less meaningful depending on the golfer).

For reference I play the 0317STs and the CBs are much more forgiving. I simply chose the STs because that's what I was drawn to when buying.

These are opposite of what he’s looking for though. He wants low bounce and CG. Ping is high bounce and CG. Someone else recommended PXG and my understanding is they are like ping with the high bounce.

Second the Ts1-M, absolutely meet all your needs and fabulous irons. Plus you can get 2 sets of these for the same price as most of the irons listed here that are nowhere close to what you are looking for. I built a set of these to tide me over until this years Apex Pros came out. For me, as a very thin stripe to picker, these blow the Apex Pro and the Mizuno Pro 245 out of the water so now I’m building a second set for my Arizona bag.

I’ll issue a mea culpa, I lazily read and was focusing on an iron without a lot of camber. i230 would be a great option but it is, indeed, wider soled with high bounce.

I'm more of a picker as well, get along with narrower soles, and miss on the thin side. Just did a fitting this past week and while the T200 would probably be game-able, the T150 was far superior due to the sole/turf interaction. They look great, feel fantastic, are plenty forgiving, and manage thin strikes very well. Join the cult man, quit playing around 😂

JPX 923 forged would be good.  If you want a little more distance and forgiveness, T-200 (more shaft options as well).

Apex’s don’t dig? I’ve taken divots that I could re-sell at Home Depot as sod…
