Old But Still High Performing Clubs. Any others?

I've been experimenting down this road lately. I think it's hard to find similar performance in woods if you go back too far... the difference between a modern driver vs. something circa ~2010 or so is pretty large when you're talking about ballspeed and forgiveness across the face. But if you can middle it all the time, take advantage, you may not see too big of a drop off. I still play an R510tp from time to time!

But stuff like the G400 series or anything within the last 8-10y will probably keep up just fine.

You’ll have to explain to me why driver distance, which last I heard bore some relation to ball speed and forgiveness (if not “across the face,” where oh where shall forgiveness be found?) peaked in 2005.

My 5 wood is a first generation G series. Just to make sure i wasn’t leaving anything on the table in terms of distance and forgiveness I hit the g425. My G series went a few yards further and felt much better. I think it’s about 8 years old now. I also am gaming the original cobra cb/mb from 2016. Can’t beat them

lol what?

My point is that newer drivers are longer and more forgiving overall. If you can center it up on the face time after time: new or old driver performance won’t differ all that much

Still playing an Taylormade R9 3 wood with Fujukura shaft. No need to replace.

I've had an R9 4w since 2010 I think. Bought it secondhand for ¥10,000 (back then a little under US$100, now about $75).

Probably my best ever club purchase in terms of value for money. I've tried other fairway woods to replace it, but it has seen off at least 10 challengers, the last one being a TM Stealth 5w.

Now, however, it is threatened by a Ping 430 5w I bought late last year. I'm still in the trial stage, but this might be the one. The first on-course trial of the Ping a couple of days ago went well, but I prefer the shape, sound, and feel of the R9.

Thinking about it, most of my modern bag is "old" by WRX standards. Driver is a Ping G400, which I got the year it came out (2018?), my 7-wood is a V-steel, hybrid is a 2013 model RomaRo, irons are Mizuno MP4s, and I've a Srixon z745 A wedge as my gap wedge. And the putter is a BeCu Anser2, though it's a fairly new addition to the bag.

Only my wedges are close to new. I got an Artisan 56* early last year, and the 60* is a 2021 Vokey Forged.

BeCu Anser2 = presumably No sound slot? (And sound slot = Anser MnBz only?)

Right, no sound slot.

I've a Anser that I think is MnBz (90s reissue, I believe) that has a sound slot. No picture of it, unfortunately.

I prefer the feel of the reissue Anser to the BeCu Anser 2, but I putt better with the latter.

And by "better" I mean I only miss two or three short putts a round with the Anser 2.

Every now and then, when I'm wearing out the sweet spot I'll throw the SLDR 430 JDM in the bag. It's longer than any driver I've ever tried, by far. It's just too penal when my swing isn't the best.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Just wanted to provide an update after another round with them.  First I'm in shock at how good these feel.  May be blasphemous, but I think if you blind folded someone they wouldn't be able to tell they were cast.   Second, these have been really accurate.  They are so easy to align and I've hit so many shots online.

But the most important aspect is the sole grind and turf interaction.   They don't have an obvious V-sole like Srixon but you can easily see the leading edge camber that just cuts through the turf with no digging. I think that's mainly why they feel so good. I really hit down on the ball and these allow me to be aggressive without worrying about any dig.

I'm not sure why there were never released in the US but I think if they did they would've had a cult like status.
