Had to share what is this never seen anything like it.

Recommended Posts

Even when done correctly it looks capable of causing injury, though I'll let a physio or the like give some decisive info on that. At a minimum my body is . Ignoring that part I just question the other hoop jumping needed to make this work.

With other recent discussions we've seen good pics of how much less importance the trail hand plays in stability through contact. Clay Ballard has a 10ish minute video where he discusses the pressure changes in the lead hand through a good strike for elite players. We know the forces that exist from the club trying to continue it's path out & away and escape the hand as well as from all the moments the club's torque acts on. I don't see how this grip properly overcomes those for anyone with a quicker transition or who swings at a higher speed in general on top of now making trail hand pressure a lot more important.

There's zero chance that having the inertia of the club acting against the fingers of the lead hand in a weak position like this one is as sound as a traditional grip. You can also feel how much weaker the closure of the lead hand thumb is when in this upside down grip rather than something traditional. The lead hand is in a statically and dynamically disadvantageous setup for anyone trying this, as is the lead ulna, radius, wrist structure, and the entirety of the arm & shoulder musculature from what I can tell.

An aside, and it could maaaybe be the mics used, but none of those example shots in the little medley at the beginning sounded like they were flushed. I doubt it was the mic/mics, but maybe. I'm sure it was aided by all the dancing their feet were doing in the downswing, but I have to imagine the grip played its part as well.

Hard to believe but this grip has been around 30 years or more.

True story... about 25 or 30 years ago when I was a PGA member and teaching, I had a guy call me and booked a lesson on the condition that "you can change anything with my swing except my grip.".  I thought, 'How bad could it be?' and agreed.  He showed up and I watched him hit a few balls to loosen up and was completely stunned. I couldn't figure out how the guy could make contact without breaking his arm or dislocating his elbow!  But he was hitting the ball all over the place.

So I sat the guy down and we talked about his grip. He told me he had read about it in a golf magazine like Golf Digest or somewhere and totally believed in the reasoning behind it... it made sense to him.  And I told him I honestly couldn't honor my agreement because I had never seen anything like that in my life.  But if he gave me 15 minutes to attempt to change his grip, and he didn't see improvement, he could leave no charge and no questions asked and he agreed.  15 minutes later, he was hitting some solid shots, pretty straight and a nice trajectory... still room for lots of improvement but they felt and looked like golf shots.  We continued on... he was happy and paid me for the lesson at the end and scheduled another for about a week later.

And then I NEVER saw or heard from him again.  I always wondered what happened?  LOL

He went back to his old grip

Is it the guy in the video; the creator of the grip?

I don't think so.  But who knows?  I honestly can't remember anything about the guy other than that gawdawful grip.  After he left, I HAD to go try and replicate it and take a few swings where no one was watching me.  Never could figure it out.  Actually the most mysterious thing for me was how the guy could get it to parallel at the top of his backswing.  I never could without smacking myself in the face with my forearm.  Was afraid I would dislocate my shoulder or elbow!

Big brain moment there, could have just as easily sent him packing but instead you might have saved his golfing life 😅

It sure gets views. What it doesn't show are the 50 other takes per intro clip golfer to get that one good looking drive. 😄 😄😄

Years ago when I was first getting into golf I had a funky reversed grip. I don't remember if it was left hand on the bottom or a reversed hand like this, but it worked only for a while. When I tried a regular grip it was so foreign.... LOL

Now I can't imagine why the heck I tried golfing that way.

There was a player on the Web.com tour who played with a reverse grip - left hand low.

That's what it was; left hand low for sure. When I was a kid it felt natural and seemed to work. I always said the right grip felt wrong. It did for a while, until my consistency went up. LOL 😄

Josh Broadaway actually had his PGA Tour card for a year, IIRC.

Crazy leverage in his swing, he smashes it (pic below). I tried it one day at the range - it hurt and I could barely make contact. But it’s far easier to lag the clubhead with the trail hand on the end of the club. I’ve seen it used as a drill before I think.

He’s quite a character. I first learned about him on the Golf SubPar podcast (episode link below). He walked on at Troy University, the coach was unsure and said he didn’t have scholarship money, but let him play in a 10-round qualifier against the other guys to see if he could make the team. He waxed the field by 14 strokes and the coach magically came up with scholarship money. Ended up making over 230 starts on the Korn Ferry, had 17 top 10s and won $734K.

I taught a semi-famous instructor for a little while and had him hitting shots cross-handed to help him achieve a certain feel with the right elbow and his hands. He did it for about two hours. Most balls had an apex of about 30 feet, but… that cross-handed grip can really promote shaft lean.
