"Thud" "thwack" "solid" sounding fairway woods?

Recommended Posts

Do love my TSR2 for performance but it's a bit of a higher pitched/metallic sound than I love. I'm just curious what out there sounds/feels more solid/dull feeling? Bonus if it comes in 4w and 7w.

Titleist TSR3 has great sound and feel, in a nice compact package.

It's funny... The Tsi3 sounded great and felt great but I thought the TSR3 looked significantly smaller, little too small for my liking in a 3w. Maybe I could get used to a smaller look though, would be an easy transition since it would be a head swap only.

I like the cobra sound.

The old F8 I had felt amazing, but performance was meh. The last Cobra wood I hit was Radspeed I think, and it felt more tiny/hollow compared to the old model. Is Darkspeed back to that solid feel?

I am left handed. I did see a few Stealth bonded 4w heads on ebay... do you know if they make a 7w? I'm a big delofter (not sure if that's good or bad...) and I tend to play higher lofts on all my clubs, hence the 4w and 7w I have now.

All you need to achieve exactly that is a couple grams of hotmelt in the head. When it comes to all steel fairways like the Titleists you can just reduce the adjustable weight by a couple grams and have that added back via hotmelt, little bit on the crown and a little bit in the sole and it's "thwack" city.

I was tinkering with lead tape on my 3W. The same weekend, a replacement part arrives for my lawnmower. After fixin' the mower, I took the Craftsman sticker that came with the part, and put it on the crown for fun. This wood now sounded muffled and more subdued when I tested it. Turns out it wasn't the sticker...but the strip of lead tape at the rear and on the crown side of the club head, that did it. I think the crown is the biggest contributor to sound...maybe. 🤔

I ned to check but don't see a port in mine? Or do you need to go through the hosel on these. I forgot about that option. I did HM once before to a driver... kind of messy/annoying process. Have my supplies around the garage somewhere.

Yeah it's definitely one that you have to setup a station for, hah.

I'm not sure if there is hosel access, but normally the screw hole for the removeable weight goes through into the head so you use that for access.

Went from TSi2 FW to Qi10 Tour FW and the Qi10 has a much more solid feeling impact with a "thud" type sound. The Cobra DarkSpeed LS FW I tested was between the Titleist and Taylormade in terms of sound and feel.

Driver: Cobra DarkSpeed LS 10.5° - Tensei AV White 65x
3W: TaylorMade Qi10 15° - Kai'li White 70x
5W: TaylorMade Qi10 18° - Kai'li White 70x

Wedges: Cleveland RTX 6 TourRack 54 mid & 58 low - Modus 125 Wedge Shaft

The Titleist TS2 has more of a solid thwack sound than the TSi and TSR versions to me.  I have a TS2 as my back-up 4W and it's a much different sound than the TSR2 that's in the bag.

I have found that the latest iterations of both Taylormade and Cobra have that dense feel / solid 'thwack' that I prefer.  Callaway is not bad.  Titleist is still a little tingy / harsh for my preference.  Out of them all, I really disliked the Ping G430 4W the most because of the sound / feel (but love the hybrid).

OP, I kept my TSi2 4W in the bag because of the sound and feel you are talking about.

TSR fairways have an empty "clack"  that seems closer to what I hear with multi-material heads (I.e. titanium + carbon fiber).  I sent my new TSR2 4W - after 3 rounds - up to my dad's house to live in my spare bag up there.
