What putter head weight does everyone like?

Recommended Posts

Saw this the other day, with Scottie Schefflers head weight being 343 I always thought I was the odd one liking light putter heads (for a period of time I had 330, now playing around with 345-350), figured a bit more heel toe weighting can help moi

was wondering what do you guys like to play? Or if anyone knows other kinds of head weight specs that show up on pga? I always assumed 355/360 was the norm

There is a general correlation between putter length and putter headweight but swingweights are not an exact science. Take 33 inch, 34 inch and 35 inch putters. As a general rule, the shorter the putter, the heavier the putter head.

I think a good modern day general rule of thumb is 33 inch putter - 365g and above, 34 inch putter - between 350g & 360g, 35 inch putter - 350g and below.

I play my putters at 35 inches and I find it difficult to judge distance control with any putter that has a headweight of 355g or above.

Scottie is playing his Spider at 35.5 inches and a headweight of 343g so this falls right into the modern swingweight.

Putters have generally over recent years become heavier. I have never gone down to the path of broomstick or counter-balanced putters but they usually have headweights of 380g or above but this is offset with a heavier grip.

Conversely, Tiger's putter is 35 inches and has a headweight of 326g which would be considered light by modern standards.

I can’t stand light putters, just don’t flow for me, feel unstable

My new SC 5.5, 34” has 25g weights to get head to 385, normal shaft, grip, no counter balance, feels perfect.

My Toulon Portland has the 40g plate, head is 386, like em heavy.

This suddenly makes a lot more sense to me! Thanks

Same here, I just can't seem to putt consistently with a light putter head.

I use the PXG Battle Ready Gunboat @35" with a head weight of 420 grams. Total putter weight is 620 grams.

I want to like a lighter putter, and have tried to make them work. The heavier putters just seem to be easier to control, and distances are much more consistent. My Meridian at 370g has been the best for me, but who knows what the next experiment will be.

Swing weight is much more important than head weight IMO. Unless you are using the same grip and shaft on every putter you try or buy, I just worry more about how it feels vs paying attention to the head weight. I have putters with heads in the 380 range that feel lighter to swing than putters weighing 320 because of the shaft, grip, etc...

345-355 for me, lately heavier just can't get it going and lighter is just inconsistent for me. So sweet spot at 350g at 34.5"

With my current putters, I like a D9-ish swing weight, and I usually get there by adding one inch to the shaft.

I have an old 1996 Newport that I loved for a long time... but now sits on a shelf because its too light for my current preferences.

I tried slapping a bunch of lead tape on it, but the old skinny shaft loaded and kicked way too much.  I guess deviating from the original design is a bad idea.  It sure is pretty to look at though.

350. I play a 33” length but have gone as short as 31.5”. I agree with others, a lighter putter introduces some unwanted unforced errors. I play an LA P Series 135g in my 350g Coggin at 32.5”, which is a really nice setup for me.
