Looking for a 230yd club

Recommended Posts

So I carry a 3 wood that I hit roughly 260yds and 4 iron 210-215. I have a 20° hybrid that I hit 240 yds. It’s hot and often find myself playing away from it afraid of it jumping. Would a 21 or 23 ° solve my problem? Not opposed to a driving iron as well. Just trying to figure out the proper loft to fit my gap.

Try a 22° or 23° hybrid. Could become your new favorite club quickly. Mine is my secret weapon and my only gripe would be the gap to the 5i, which is bigger than I‘d like.
I have a New Level NLH-01 which looks sleek, sounds and feels great, is very forgiving and much less hook prone than other hybrids.

I‘ve hit some of my best approach and tee shots with it, and can keep it low into a headwind when needed. Absolute rocket launcher.

That’s a challenging spot for sure. I am the same, but for me it’s 220-230. I have a driving iron that you can pull for my cold, dead hands, but I can’t hit it off the deck very well.

I do think that when it comes to that sort of distance, people either like Long irons, Fairway Woods, or hybrids. Do you find yourself more comfortable with one over the other? I could make some recommendations but want to see what fits your eye first.

Given what we know, which isn't a lot (in terms of actual data), I'd recommend a 21 degree Callaway UW. These are very hot, but retain the ability to launch as needed. I can hit shots that launch high and land softly, but I can also keep this club low and add some more distance as needed. I have a Ping 7 wood that I also love, but it's more of a high launch only club which is why the Callaway usually is in the bag (depending on the course).

You have the right idea. Get a 21 and you’re golden.

I went with a 7 wood for that gap.

That was going to be my recommendation.  My brother went driver, lofted down 5w, 7w, 4i and he can hit about any shot he likes with it.

For me, my 230 is just my 18.5* hybrid.  Sometimes its hot, sometimes not, but I'm also in the belief that at that distance I'm trying to not necessarily stiff it, but hit a quality shot close to the green and then let my chipping and putting take center stage.  I find the 3h is much more versatile than the 5w or 3i that I've tried to use, as I can do the shots that either of those can do with my 3h, but not the reverse.  The 5w goes high, the 3i goes low, the 3h can do both.  So if you like hybrids I'd say play with the lofts some to find one that fits what you need.  The Titleist hybrid adapters are good because you can adjust the loft without adjusting the face angle (same with Callaway I believe).

I’m a low ball, mid-low spin guy so I replaced my 3i with a 7w to fit that gap with more holding power.

This is good insight. For me, 220-230 is one of 3 things...

- Longest Par 3 i'l probably play

- Second shot into a par 5

- horrible drive on a long par 4, and probably in the rough

In all of those instances, I'm not tryin to flag it, I'm trying to get on the green, or close to it, and more importantly, hit a shot that sets me up to get down in 2 more shots. For me, that's a hybrid as I don't have the confidence over a 7 wood, and I can't hit a long iron high enough to stop it near it's pitch mark from that distance.

That 20* probably spins too low. Try to find a higher spinning 19*-20* hybrid or a 5/7 wood. Maybe the Taylormade tour 6 wood with the weight slid all the way back will hit that number.

Ya sorry I should have included it’s a callaway apex pro 20°. Thing is HOT! I do have a Callaway forged ut in 21°. Going to try that tomorrow and see!

Yep I totally agree.  That 230ish shot is important for me in general.  My course has 2 par 5's I can hit with 230 and 2-3 par 4's where I'll hit it (plus one par 3 if I play the tippy tips).  So I always want something that I have confidence in.  Thats why I cannot get the 5w working, I cannot get the results off the tee, then the 3i I cannot get the results off the ground into the 5s.  The biggest issue I found the answer for was off the tee, I just throw the ball on the ground.  As soon as I try to hit it off a tee it goes to hell.

So I have a stock 3 iron callaway cb I have never tried. I also have a callaway 21°  UT I haven’t hit much. Also have a 23° callaway hybrid I can try. I hit the 23° earlier this year and it went the same distance as my 4 iron I felt. I am skeptical to see how this UT works out of the rough and fairways for that matter. Great off a tee for sure

Tweener for me...I have a GI 4 iron that goes 220-225 and a 5 wood that goes 235-245. Depends on your game and what you like I guess.

Flight/spin and consistency/versatility would be what I'd be looking for to get the most use out of what you're seeking, besides just the perfect distance.

Just got fit to a Qi10 Tour 5 wood (18 deg) for this yesterday. Carry was 235 with weight back, ~250 with weight forward (Ventus TR Blue 8X). Plan is to play driver, mini, and then 5 wood or 3i depending on set-up. I've played a TSR 18 deg (Ventus TR Red 7X) but felt it was one dimensional (high and spinny, although that could have been the shaft pairing) and didn't conjure much confidence off the tee (great for stopping shots into par 5s though).

Good luck!

Static loft might be a great recommendation on paper but as for how you adapt to a new club the yardage won’t be as simple as 1° equalling 3 yards.
I play 2 4 irons for a similar reason. One being my iron set 4 iron and the other is a Srixon ZX Utility which yielded faster ball speeds than my Miura 4 iron at the same loft. Bent it strong to get rid of any massive overlap between the two.

My apex uw at 21° when I hit it perfect is my 225-230 club. YMMV. At your speed a more std 7w with a little higher spin would like fit the bill for you.

I love driving irons. I have had a U505 and now have a new HiFli and they are so easy to hit off tee and rough/fairway. They just go straight for me. I highly recommend giving one a try if you can. I go 13.5 mini driver to 19 degree HiFli.  That gap is about 30 yards, if I wanted to fill that I would buy the 2 iron in the HiFli is a second.
