my honeymoon with SGI's

Apologies if this question has already been asked. I play Ping I20 irons and have not yet seen the G25 iron. Can someone please tell me if the width of the sole on the G25 is wider then the I20 ?

Thanks
Yes, overall the G25 is wider than the i20, but not as wide as the G20. Sole widths are progressive. The 4 and 5 irons are still pretty wide while the 8,9 and PW are thinner, but still wider than i20 soles

This will be my second resurrection today but thought I'd submit my G15 convert membership application. Jeff, please request your royalty fee from PING.

Like most here I have played for a long time and "gamed" many, many sets. Too, many sets.

Over the years, I began to gravitate to player's clubs (Cleveland TA3, MacGregor 1025 CM, Cobra SS Forged and Adams A4 forged). I was playing three time a week and my handicap was a paltry, for me, 9.7.

I remember reading this topic from Jeff and thinking it was just a honeymoon. A desperate attempt to "convince" themselves that golf-greatness hadn't alluded them. I was different. It was putting and driving that were my bugaboos. Surely I could still strike pure iron shots. Have fun with your cast, cavity-backed shovels, boys. While you are in iron-play purgatory, I will bask in the beautiful paradise that only a forged player's club could provide. As I have become older (and fatter), work, family and other obligations have taken more and more of my golfing time away from me. Now, my handicap has plummeted to 16.5 and I only play once a week. It was during this time last year that I remembered my best rounds were played around 2000 with Callaway Big Bertha 4-10 irons (remember that gimmick?). Oh, those were the days! The days before I worked as a club-fitter, repairman and salesman. Before I "knew" how my irons were holding me back. Before I knew that the stinging vibration of a poor shot was actually called "feedback". Before I knew what "buttah" felt like.

Yesterday I fell on my knees to the alter of you, Jeff. You didn't know it but you and I were engaged in an epic battle of wills. In the end I submitted because, deep down in my soul, I knew that you were right. You always were. I am now the proud owner of PING G15 4-UW in AWT stiff. I thank you, Jeff. Without knowing it, you may have just saved my golf game. Just like you have done for countless others.

Three cheers for Jeff.

So in the last few years I've had S58s, S56s and i20s in the bag. Got
a great deal on a set of Rapture V2s so I bought them 4-U. They have
been sitting in the garage for about 6 months.

Finally took them out the other day and wow, so easy to hit. I'm pretty
much a sweeper/picker and these irons just ignore slightly thin and fat
misses. Thin misses just go high and long. If you catch it a little heavy
these won't dig; just glide into ball.

These irons are super SGI with a ti face and tungsten toe weight. They
seem to really work well with my shallow angle of attack. I thought
distance control might be an issue with these because of the ti face
but Ping has engineered these really well. I mean you're not gonna be
precise with an iron like this but if I'm honest I don't have precise
distance control with any iron. I'm just not that good.

Actually, my distance control was better than with the i20. A thin hit
with the i20 is a low line drive 20 yards over the green. A thin hit with
these Raptures goes pretty much the same distance as a flush hit.
I like that forgiveness.

I just turned 60 a few months back and I don't plan to play in the
state senior am so why not? That's what I say to myself, lol...
I'm not into "mastering" players irons anymore. Just wanna play, shoot
decent scores and enjoy my time with friends.

I'm a 9 HC and my first time out with these I shot 78, which is a good
round for me. I think these will help me lower my HC, not that it
really matters anymore. I just keep an index for my own purposes.
I can't shoot 67 or 68, let alone under pressure, which is what it takes
to compete with the seniors in the state am.

So I'm taking my ego to the woodshed and I'm gonna play these
Raptures for awhile, wide sole and all, and see how low I can go.
Now if I could just putt!

I can elevate the ball just fine with my scoring irons and use hybrids in lieu of my long irons (2 iron - 5 iron). However, I have a backup set of G15 irons with AWT shafts for use as I get older.
Funny you say that. When I bought the Raptures I thought I'll just keep
them and use them when I get old. Then I realized, I AM OLD! And yes
they have AWT shafts.

Traitor !!!

Spring of '12 I had access to a Golfsmith hitting bay pretty much as much as I wanted. I hit all manner of shafts in the I20 and G20. I20's weren't bad but (strangely enough ?) I couldn't feel where on the face I was hitting the ball. G20's were (not surprisingly) more forgiving but I also had a good idea of where I hit them (on the face).

Hands down the most consistent shaft was the DG S300. I was about 2-3 yards shorter than the other shafts but the dispersion was MUCH tighter. Very consistent distance and very straight. A no brainer. So I fit myself for length and lie (Yellow dot) and ordered 5-U with DG S300 Yellow dot.

Last year I had the best ball striking season (irons especially) of my life. This year is proceeding nicely at the same rate.

I've hit the G25 and can't seem to hit them at all,,,,,, to be fair though it was during the off season when I wasn't playing and really didn't have much of a swing going. That, and I only hit 4 or 5 balls 2 or 3 separate times so I really didn't give them any sort of a fair shake. Then again, I have ZERO desire to replace my G20's,,,,,,,,,,,,, :smilie_ping: :D

Okay, so I've posted on this thread a few times and I've been on both sides of the fence, but I came from a conclusion. I will never go back to sgi or even gi irons again. I just find the thick soles to be nearly impossible to cut through rough, and the lack of feel utterly frustrating. I didn't mind it for a while, I played nike machspeed forged irons, but I ultimately found out that they were costing me strokes due to their lack of versatility. I just bought a set of mizuno mp 68 blades, and will be playing a combo set between them and the mp 58s, and will not be going back anytime soon. Handicap of 0.5

I never got a chance to post in Jeff's epic thread because I would NEVER leave my Mizunos. Thin top line and sole, next to no offset and chrome shiney goodness, be crazy to swing anything else. But I enjoyed reading it and found it intruging that so many lower hcp were either switching or had been playing big ugly clubs.........blasphemy.

I am 4 weeks into a set of G25 and couldn't be happier. My GIR have increased by 3 -4, I am definetly hitting it closer to the hole and my scores have decreased. Just want to say thanks to all that contributed, it pushed me past vanity to results. Good stuff !!!!!

Sigh, maybe it's time for me to start playing SGIs. I hit my AP2s well, but on those off days, I just don't enjoy the game.

Considering I'm not going to be on the Web.com tour or the PGA, I may as well make the switch to make the game fun and easy. Since I already made the switch in regards to my FW and hybrid, I don't see why I shouldn't make the switch in the irons, right?

Have a look at this thread. Have a feeling you'll be posting in it in the upcoming weeks to let everyone know you've made the switch. :)

LOL! I actually read his review a few weeks ago, and that really got me thinking! I did like the G25s when I demoed them, but it's a bit more difficult for me to part with the AP2s since I save all my money up to buy them not too long ago.

Weren't you playing these before? I thought you were, or maybe their older variant? I somehow recall you saying it was a forgiving club that didn't make you feel like you were playing SGI or something along those lines.

Have these helped pull you out of your slump?

I am playing 825 Pro's but am not not getting along with the longer irons (5-4).

yup, played JPX800's last year. Then got rid of them and basically went back. I'm not really sure if i'm in a slump yet, our weather has been pretty bad early in the year, my handicap went up, but i feel like i'm due for some good golf!
