Welp This was my line up for tonight. Just cracked the Old Rasputin BBA XIX. Little bit of a gusher and that all too familiar scent of diacytl (buttered popcorn) Im letting it sit right now but have a feeling this will be a $22 drain pour. Too bad I was excited for this one.

I love regular Old Rasputin, thought this would be a winner for sure. I messaged the bottleshop on FB and the owner is nice enough to offer an exchange for somethings of equal value which was awesome especially after having to toss over $100 worth of bad beer out during the year between Silva Stout 2015 Bourbon county barlewine and a Molyans BBA stout that were all bad.

Good on the owner! What's the deal with the infected barrel aged stuff, is it the aging process or the barrels themselves....I know I've tasted that buttered popcorn taste before in a bb beer, but never in a non barrel aged beer.

It can be a number of things. Bacteria in the barrels. Un clean filler lines, bacteria in the bottles. This is why the Bruery now brews and bottles their sours in a 2nd brewhouse. The bacteria that makes sours sour is not necessarily good when it gets into stouts from improperly cleaned lines. When you introduce an element like barrels there is always the risk of an infection happening considering the beer is in the barrels from 6-18+ months. As drinkers we just hope QA is good enough to weed out any issues before product hits the shelves.

Hmm at least I wasn't the only one who was thoroughly unimpressed with BA Rasputin. My wife and I couldn't even finish the bottle. I wouldn't say my bottle was a gusher, but it was definitely overcarbed and had a nasty cardboard taste. It was a pricey drainpour.

Exchanged the bad BBA old rasputin for another Pugachev Cobra from hangar 24 and a Modern Times Orderville dank IPA. Was really cool of the shop owner to do that. The cobra was 4 bucks cheaper but i just told him to call it even.

SoCal guys, I need some advice. I have a work trip to the Anza-Borrego off-road area coming up in Mid-February. We will be flying into San Diego and staying there the first and last night. Where should I go for some great brews? I'm thinking Modern Times and Ballast Point, but I'm sure there are other good options as well. Also, I might be able to squeeze in a little bit of golf. Where should I look to play? FYI, I've never been to the area and am super excited about it :)

Thanks!

New to the Forum - just wanted to say hi all fellow beer geeks. I was head Brewer at LauderAle when they opened in Fort Lauderdale, FL. I've also won many home brew competitions in the South Florida area. I'm going to fire up the kettles again soon and brew some award winning Double IPA if anyone lives in the area and would like to try it.

After today's round I believe I'll have a Terrapin Wake N Bake coffee stout.

Both are solid and you won't be disappointed but I'd suggest alesmith and lost abbey/port. SD has so many options for beer

For golf check out Barona Creek it is about half way between Anza Borrego and SD. Stone in Escondido not my favorite brewer but their bottle list is pretty dang amazing and they usually have Pliny on Tap since they distribute for R.R. in So Cal. the beer gardens is a pretty chill place to hang out too. There is so many there you cant go wrong Port/Lost Abbey, Alesmith would be two I really want to hit.

Modern Times Orderville solid IPA super hazy and dank with just enough pine. Getting back into Ipas again now that some new stuff is hitting phoenix and buying $20 stouts is getting old in a hurry.

Also started my first Tavour order in over a year. Melvin Brewing Asterisk IIPA was too hard to pass up. Ships 2/13 so I'm sure I'll be adding a bunch more since flat rate shipping from them.

Happy Monday :)

Already this year?

Yep, this year's batch will be arriving locally this week.

Curious to see what you think. Before the craft beer boom Hopslam was king, but now it's a shadow of its former self. Bought a 6pk a couple days ago and I drain poured the first one. Just not the same beer. Maybe it's all the Domino Sugar but it was unbearably sweet to me.

Trimtab IPA out of Birmingham, Al and Tropicalia from Creature Comfort out of Athens, Ga. Both very tasty and flavorful and the Trooicalia is not the easiest to find.

Also a 64oz growler of Cherry Street coconut porter, also out of Atlanta

I live about 1.5 hrs south of Athens and Creature Comforts makes some good beer. Arcadiana is a good one from them.
