Cleveland VAS 792

Made up with an old friend today........
I bought a set of Cleveland VAS 792 12 years ago and really liked them despite the purple cavity and strange offset hosel. My dad though thought they were terrible and wouldnt partner me in the club 4 ball if i had them in my bag. i got a set of eye 2+ and we lost the 1st round.

Today i was invited to play at a club that i had wanted to play for a while and when in my garage to grab an old bullseye i like to use on quick greens i saw the vas's in the corner in my old Tommy Armour 845 carry bag. I dont know what made me do it but i pulled out my beloved i3+ and put in the VAS's.

I play off 14 and had 2 birdies today. I dont pretend to be able to work the ball so hitting the ball dead straight was a real bonus for me today. Sure i was probably a club weaker than the i3+'s but i soon compensated and had a real enjoyable round. I pared all the par 3's and birdied the 2 short par 4's with deadly accurate PW's.

Dad is coming up to see our 3 mth old baby in a couple of weeks and he is bringing his clubs. The Vas's are staying in the bag - im old enough to cop his abuse and go my own way now!!!

Has anyone got a set of VAS's they love or any irons that they have had for a while and just cant give up regardless of technology??

My father-in-law picked up a set last fall at a garage sale for like $20 that also came with some old Taylor Made Bubble Burners. He purchased them kinda as a whim but ended up loving the Irons and was playing some of the best golf with them. For father's day I got him a set of Hogan CFT's which he has been playing with since, but I think he got better results with the VAS.

Those VAS Irons sure are ugly, but I guess they work pretty good b/c he still talks about them.

Thanks,

Interesting post. I had these in high school until I switched to some ping eye 2s my senior year. However, I really loved these clubs despite the purple graphite. I sold mine almost a decade ago but my dad has a set that has sat on our porch for years. I should pull them out for fun soon.

They were good clubs, but the extreme perimeter weighting, damping pad and purple color that came directly from the Rossignol ski design team didn't fly with conservative golfers. They got an A for engineering but an F for market research.

I was an 18 handicapper and a slicer when I bought my VAS irons in 1995 and immediately fell in love with them.  I didn't play a ton but practiced pitching and putting often.  I just couldn't hit irons or woods.   Sliced them a lot.  The VAS irons went dead straight.  The were never very long but I knocked off 4 strokes almost immediately.  They made the game enjoyable.  I remember writing Roger Cleveland a letter and they sent me a shirt, a towel, some grips and a very nice thank you letter.  I used them until 2000 when I committed to playing more and got fitted for clubs.   I ended up purchasing some Cleveland TA3s with UST graphite shafts with 1.5 inch longer shafts.  I found out my shafts were too short and was told I couldn't replace the boron shafts with new graphite so I bought new clubs instead.  Sold off my VAS and with some lessons became a 3 handicap.   Now 20 plus years later, I was still hanging around a 6 handicap when I got injured in January.   I assumed I would never play golf again.  Sciatica so bad, I just can't take a divot.  But in June I got talked into getting some VAS irons again.  Your really can play easily without taking a divot.  I have played 3 rounds so far with them.  They are really dead straight.  But those boron shafts do not hit the ball very far (plus the irons are 6 degrees more loft than the Calloway Rogue X irons they replaced.)    Truly the hardest part about trying to play now is figuring out the distances.  The pitching wedge is 35 yards shorter.  So I am going to try and find someone to replace the shafts but if I can't, I will not complain because I can at least play occasionally now.  Far better than giving it up.  So I thank those VAS irons and Roger Cleveland a second time!

The Launcher HB irons are the logical progression from the VAS, perfect for a no divot sweep swing. You should seek some out to try. They don't sacrifice a yard of distance for ease of hitting and accuracy. Just as ugly too. 😆

Two of these a day cured my sciatica: https://www.puritan.com/puritans-pride-brand-0102/tumeric-curcumin-450-mg-015419

Glad to see other people giving the VAS some love. Granted these have a special spot in my heart because they were the first irons I bought for myself, but they did perform well enough for me. I'm probably going to sell them (minus the 3 iron) to a family friend.

I used to have a VAS 2 iron in the bag back in high school. It holds the distinction as the first club that I ever broke over my knee in disgust.

Just bought the vas plus for £30, just couldn't resist as I've always wanted a go with them......5 hours later and I've carded a one over 72 gross with 2 birdies. I'm addicted to ugly....played zings for a good while. But these just bomb straight, not long but very very straight....they're staying in the bag
