2013 TaylorMade R1 Driver: Review, Video and Pics

i picked one up today ...i dialed it down to 9 degrees. This opens the face two degrees.

Maybe because i'be been used to the neutral setup of the I20 my current driver...well current before today.

i would open the face a bit and swing further right to produce my push draw.....and maybe just takes some time to get used to it....

But i was having trouble playing the draw with the R1....i guess there are several things at play....the R1 also has a higher swing weight.....

I dunno

anyone else have this issue???..I suppose its good...I can really snap through and end up with a straightish shot...no more snap hooks.

did you ever move the ASP to close the face? or swap the weights to put the 10g in the heal to influence the draw? those 2 will help you get that draw back

no i haven't tried that yet. Anyone here test with weights in standard position then in the draw position? If so did you notice ballspeed loss in the draw position?

I did and there was a slight gain in ball speed ........ That was over 10 shots for each position.

I will say the spin is very low with the R1. Almost PING Anser low. My longest LM efforts with the R1 were at the 10* setting (and I like 8.5-9* drivers). The interesting thing is that I hit a few very low on the face due to the inconsistent tee heights in the sim, and still managed to keep spin at 1900 or so. Low on driver face is typically the spin zone.

My only beef is that when playing the club at the 8.5 degree setting the face felt cranked VERY open and I like a neutral to .5* open face. THe ASP wasn't helping because I hover. And adjusting with my hands was freaking me out a bit. TOo mAnY aNgLes for my brain to babysit. I guess its good that I play it at 10*

I'm playing today - I'll snatch one and let it go head to head against my Anser/Diamana D+ combo !!

I'll post a review from actual outdoor play tonight.

Why was the tee height inconsistent? Did you not use the same tee for all your shots?

I tried it with draw weighting (light toe), fade weighting (heavy toe), and neutral weighting with two 6 gram weights. There was no appreciable difference in ball speed.

Very interested to hear your followup...I just came from a Diamana ahina 8.5 not to long ago. I have a friend who has the same setup and with some recent swing changes he seems to need some added spin and launch.
2 questions
1. what are you avg ballspeeds and spin R1 and Anser
2. what kind of launch angle are you seeing comparing the two

this would be a great help to me in addition to your on the course review....thanks Adam

Thats really interesting....i was reading ...(obsessing as usuall) over this and supposedly when you take weight out and move it toward the heal you are moving the mass out from behind the ball and the energy trasfer is less efficient...

But we are not machines...i'm sure you saw what you saw.

thanks for the feedback

Dude. Yes I used the same tee but it ones of those broken plastic ones that goes in to a rubber fitting and it had electrical tape on it, etc. Did my best to get it consistent -- not my first rodeo.

Ok so I get to my golf course today and I FORGOT my Anser driver at home in the garage. But my kid (NCAA D1 college golfer) is at the course and is just chipping and putting, so I asked to borrow her driver to go toe to toe against the R1 TP 65-Phenom. Her driver is a Titleist 913D3 with a RIP Phenom 70-s. So this is a good test situation. Similar shafts. Both set to 9.5. I hover so I ignored the ASP.

I played 18 holes hitting 2 drives off each driver tee box. Since this was golf I can't give you any numbers except I hit the 913 far more consistently. I couldn't hit the to the intended spot in the fairway with the R1s. It felt like I was constantly trying to correct my driver swing to hit it straight - but I connected with a few.

The 913 set up dead square - point and shoot - hit the same shape all day. (And I've never hit the 70 Phenom in the 913- new setup for me personally)

-Distance was similar +/- 5 yards here and there. Slight edge to the Titleist but nothing meaningful.

-Trajectory was similar with both. Forward flight - penetrating with good rollout on cold dry fairways.

-Sound is much improved in the R1, but still not ideal - loud and solid, but not as loud as the R11s. Tolerable. Different than indoors. ----->Real balls help!!!<------

-R1 graphics bothered me immensely - even after extended range time and 18 holes. It actually drove me nuts. It was a little embarrassing because everyone who sees the R1 tries to diagnose the idea behind the paint and talks endlessly about it. I guess that was TMAG's game plan. I found it distracting. It felt like I pulled up in a SMART car and everyone gathers around to talk it up.

913d3 was just a sleeper. Did it's job and did it reliably. My vote goes to the Titleist. Just personal preference.

see this is where i get confused. im the one who usually defends the graphics because i dont see them.

but every time i show a member my driver...they say nothing about the graphics. not one word. and my members are twice my age. im usually the one who brings up the graphics because im afraid they may be turned off by the graphics but they literally say nothing. i thought they would all say the same things everyone else says, "ahhh i cant play this, this is too distracting" but no nothing. then again none of them are members on here.

We were busy at our club today - many golfers out trying to get 18 in before the game. And we've had bad weather lately so everyone was itching to get out…and nobody had seen the R1 in person..so when I busted it out I had to peel the plastic off the head.

The "paint', as everyone called it, was the number one talking point. The club got attention and people wanted to hold it and hit it while we were on the range.

Guy's we've hit the ceiling. Get the right shaft for you and pledge your allegiance to your mfg. The R1 is no longer and certainly no shorter than anything else I've hit this year. It's a good year for drivers.

Mine has been battling the RFX this weekend. I can't get it dialed in yet, the R1 spins more for me than the RFX. The graphics don't bother me, the sound is better than the R11s but still kind of tinny. I am sticking a whiteboard in it because right now the RFX is winning easily.

I find it easy to align but it looks huge after the RFX. Ballspeeds are similar but like I said lower spin on the RFX. I played yesterday and hit a few stupid long with the RFX but not the R1. It definately needs a better shaft in my opinion.

EXACTLY^^^^ I couldn't find my alignment with it.

Edwin Watts has a playablility guarantee. I'd hate to do that to them again.

But today was rediculous.

other than alignment and sound how did it match up?

Ya ...I found no benefit on course to the I20 i had before yesterday.

Can i ask what your specs are

i'm a 106 ss 158 ball speed 14 launch with the RFE 9.5 stiff...my spin was a bit high...and luanch..i might be able to get away with the 8.5.

Mine has been battling the RFX this weekend. I can't get it dialed in yet, the R1 spins more for me than the RFX. The graphics don't bother me, the sound is better than the R11s but still kind of tinny. I am sticking a whiteboard in it because right now the RFX is winning easily.
Ya i'm thinkin i made a mistake...couildn't see to find my alignment on the course....how are ball speeds between the two
I find it easy to align but it looks huge after the RFX. Ballspeeds are similar but like I said lower spin on the RFX. I played yesterday and hit a few stupid long with the RFX but not the R1. It definately needs a better shaft in my opinion.

The RFX I have is 9.5 with x trinity
The R1 is the TP set to 9.5 with stock shaft.

I noticed on TM's facebook picture that they have the head Gallacher used listed as "TOUR" above his specs. Are they maybe planning on releasing it to the public?

THe ASP wasn't helping because I hover. And adjusting with my hands was freaking me out a bit.
You shouldn't be adjusting your hands at address, so hovering shouldn't factor into how you grip the club. All you have to do is any time before you swing, even practice swing, is place the club on the ground and then grip it.

Hopefully, you're not OCD enough that the grip logo has to be in the same symmetrical position when you grip. ;)

The only time you should be doing this is to get a little more air on the ball. Then you should be adjusting the loft some... :)

Im competent with swinging a driver. 30 years guys. I can square a face by hovering a golf club. Not my first rodeo. No need to set a driver down on grass to get it to align itself. This club has a lot of angles to it. And the racing stripes look like you are pushing your ball to the right. Hard for me to look down on.

I gave it a fair shot....outdoors on the golf course for a full round. I'll play the TItleist, happily.

I hit the R1 and really liked the feel. It went back to the feel of the R11 to me rather than the R11s. Shot dispersion was really good even on mishits. My only issue with this is the art on the back of the driver. I'm not a fan but maybe it will grow on me. Additionally does anyone know if the R1 can take the old Tmade shaft attachment?
