Get your arm swing and pivot in sync

Your issues are 100 related to arms over rotating very early in the backswing getting shoulders turning too flat with club way off plane. Only choice you have is to drastically steepen the club coming down.

Thanks Dan, I'll head over to Athlete Nation now and buy a review from you so you can let me know best way to fix.

Need to get back to working on this drill.

I used it a while ago but I'm a much better player now than when I was using it before but I know I have gotten a little out of sync recently so will try it again.

I remember once I was playing awfully, hitting everything fat, flipping, slicing, hooking, you name it, all within the first few holes. Got to the 6th hole which is a long par 3 with a green that looks the width of a pencil from the tee. For whatever reason I decided I would hit this shot using this drill swing. Stuck it to a couple of feet and to this day it remains the best shot I've ever hit on that hole!

Anyone start shanking the ball when trying to implement this drill? Obviously I am doing something wrong but was curious to see if anyone else had similar issues.

Yea I am getting the occasional shank right now - I think the "arms straight" idea along with my old stance is too close to the ball and when I pay better attention I am getting solid strikes.

Just came here to say thanks Dan, this is one of the best threads on golfwrx and ALL golfers should do this drill. 7 years ago, I was taught this drill. My coach made me do two buckets of balls until I got it and then had to warm up with it before every practice. This was to cure a long but wild driver! Although it was taught with only a 6 iron, it did solve my long clubs. It's so good, I often use it on all irons in the wind. My hdcp went from 9 to 3 with almost no penalties anymore.

BTW, Dan has some great short game vids out there, too. Highly recommend.

Tried this today in the field with SW & PW. I have issues with setup, alignment, and especially takeaway and staying centered over the ball. ALL GONE. Now i see why Spieth takes all those practice swings. I'm a big follower of Monte but Dan out did himself with this drill. To quote a Seinfeld episode, " Jerry this gold Jerry this is gold." Geez i wonder if it works putting?

I took a lesson from Dan around Easter of 2015 and he gave me this drill. Unfortunately, I started a new job shortly after and it kept me from golf for over a year. Now, I need to get back to this.

I do OK with a hip-to-hip swing, but seem to lose it a bit on fuller swings. Would a good thought be to straighten my right arm as quickly as possible during the transition and keeping both arms straight as long as possible in the follow through?

Bump.

I have the same question.

Feel is very individual. It's a drill to help get arms and pivot working together. To make it longer I'd focus on literally just elongating the swing. Anything more specific would be indidualized to the specific players needs.

You lose it cos your current transition sequence is off due to your leg action - left hip staying in internal rotation is the term? (left knee doesn't pass your hip or ankle on a face on)

One step at a time mate! In due course

My swing starting falling apart after a 7 week layoff. I reread this thread, worked on the drill and things are back in sync. I added the Smart Ball aide to the drill and that helped a great deal. It isn't necessary but it gave me a good feel and visual of keeping the hands in front and the feel of being totally in sync. Thank you, Dan! I very much appreciate you devoting some of your valuable time to this forum. My two days with you last year were the best instruction I've ever experienced. I just need to get back to the basics you taught me.

Wow, great thread.

Had 15 minutes between lessons to take a couple swings and film them. Here is me doing to the drill with two practice swings prior to actually hitting the ball. Just for frame of reference these were 8 irons that carried about 145 yards.

Excellent.

Dan - what ball flight were you hitting with this drill? Should it be the same for everyone that does this drill correctly?

It should be lowish. Curve will vary based on tilts.

Dan, if we've take lessons from you before through Athlete Nation and want to do so again through V1 do we need to sign up as a "new student"?

Bumping this great drill to the top! Dan, I have a fairly neutral grip, with about 2.5 knuckles on the left hand. When I do this drill, which is a great way to start the backswing, I notice that my left hand is dead flat at the top. Is that expected given my grip and the way the wrists set in this drill? Thanks.
