G25 Iron Review (Low Handicapper)

Instant Offense

Recommended Posts

I got paired up with a women golfer last night in our monday league who was a very strong and solid player. Being the equipment geek that I am I noticed the clubs she was carrying were older Cleveland irons, she has played for about 8 years and a Ping G15 driver. She asked how I liked the G25 irons and I told her I loved them and asked her if she wanted to hit them, she did. Long story short she striped them everytime she hit them and kept getting this huge smile on her face. Our club carries Ping and she going to get fit for a set.

The G25 continue to impress, be it male or female.

I have played enough rounds with my Ping G25 to say these things are awesome. Why didn't I make the move earlier?! I have noticed my GIR improved by 2-3 more, this is huge for a single digit handicapper. The mishits are incredibly forgiving with several of my mishits surprising making it to the green. My scoring average has come down by 1-2 strokes and I have scored under par with these irons. I am a sweeper and I find the turf interaction great, no bounce issues.

Does anyone know the actual clubhead specs for the G25? I only ask because, although it seems possible, I can't "see" the visual differences between the G15, G20 and G25 irons. I had all of these side by side at Golf Galaxy and the difference from one generation to the next seemed negligible, at best. I have an excellent set of calipers and can take measurements of the G15 if someone can do the same for the G20/25. I'd like to know what, if any, difference there is.
G25 7iron: Sole (middle): 0.93''
Topline (middle): 0.310''

G20 7iron: Sole (middle): 1.105''
Topline (middle): 0.320''
G15 7 iron: Sole (middle) 1.050"
Topline (middle) 0.319"

I'm not saying the G25 is, or is not, a great iron. In fairness, I just want to address the fact that it is in NO way a svelte player's club. I would point out, that the differences between the topline and sole width between any of the G series is negligible, at best (.011" on the topline and .175" on the sole). Maybe the darker finish has something to do with the "slimmer" look?
Great info here. Thanks for the numbers. I like the G25s, but the question is, do I like the looks $200 more than a new set of G15s? The 20s are the biggest of the 3 and I'm not considering them. Look like the difference between the 15s and 25s are minimal at best. Most significant would be the sole grind. Hmmmm...what to do?

Anyone have and comparison pics between the 15s and 25s for the win?
Still cheaper to get the G15 with a sole grind if needed. That being said I really like the shorter irons better in the G25....remind me of the i5's.

Has anyone tried the g25's with PXi's? I know ping doesn't offer these but I'd do I myself.
They are offered, albeit at a healthy up charge. I wasn't able to demo this combo but I guarantee it would be pretty lethal. The PXi's are very soft and responsive for a px shaft, but still keeps the trajectory down pretty good. I'm fishing for a 6 iron shaft to possibly try one.

Went from g15 it i29 to g25. All are fantastic. That said, I like the Cfs shafts better in the i20 than the awt in the g15. My g25 have upgraded XP s300. I like them best of all but if going with a stock set I'd go g25 due to the Cfs shafts.

I'm thinking of getting a set of pxi's and putting them in the g25's. I've done plenty of re-shafting and club work before. How hard are pings to reshaft compared to other oem's?

The easiest of Amy OEM. Not even a ferrule to worry about in G25s. Easy as pie.

I've struggled reshafting Ping's and keeping them from making clicking/tick noise, because there is a lot of clearance between the shaft and hosel wall. Not saying they can't be done, just don't think they are "The easiest...".

How is getting out of medium rough?
Depends what you are comparing them to. Because they have a large face compared to a blade ( I came from MP32) they do not cut effortlessly tnrough like a smaller profile does. That being said out of medium rough with 7 - PW they are fine. Heavy rough is more of a problem. I will say that yesterday I muscled a 9 iron out of some really deep wet rough and I got it out and onto the green, very happy with that outcome.

I've now had these irons going on for 6 weeks - used them for numerous rounds and still continue to be impressed - without doubt the best off the shelf and impulse buy regarding golf equipment I think I've ever made.

I can only add to the other hearty comments of recommendation in this thread and advise people to give these clubs a try.

Anyone put the G25s up against the Mizuno MPH4s (full set)? If so, what were your findings?

According to Maltby, the H4 has a very compact sized blade and high CG. A totally different class of iron compared to the G25. http://www.golfworks.com/images/art/MPF_MIZUNO.pdf

Wow. Shocking difference according to the MPF. Interesting. I actually thought the G25 felt softer in the long irons. Those hollow long irons just feel so tinny, although they perform incredibly well.

Well I think I've finally been hooked after following this thread for a while. Have an appointment for a lie fitting tomorrow.

I'm leaning either s300 or possibly the project x or maybe the c-tapers depending on the up charges.

I'm excited since these have been referred to as the closest thing to the i5 that Ping has released in a while and I have not found anything that'll kick those out of the bag. And the additional forgiveness is a plus as well as I went from 10+ rounds a month to 5 if I'm lucky. Thanks for the good read guys!

Gentlemen,

I am not a ho and not a great golfer, got as low as an 11.5 Once but with the arrival of young kids and a busy work schedule I probably play to a 20 if I even get the chance to get out. That being said, I currently play G2s and was thinking it was time to upgrade if it will make the times I get out more enjoyable. Has the technology changed significantly enough from G2 to G25 that even a weekend hack will reap the benefits?

I've never played G2's, but according to data supplied by Maltby, my guess is you won't experience some epiphany by moving to G25's unless you current clubs don't fit you physically. http://www.golfworks.com/images/art/MPF_PING.pdf

I played G2's (graphite S) for a long time and switched to G20's (CFS steel S) early last year - - I guess I would state it a bit differently than Nessism and say that you'll be able to make the transition quite easily. But I do like the G20's quite a bit better than the G2's - - for me: (1.) long irons easier to hit (2.) better forgiveness on toe hits, which is my tendency (3.) I like the feel better, and that's even with the graphite to steel change. I was a bit leery about the wider soles of the G20's, since the G2's soles were much narrower, but I found it to be a non factor even though I'm a sweeper/picker. The G25s are more similar to the G2's in sole width, with equal forgiveness to the G20's, so I think you'd enjoy them.

New to the MPF ratings, but agree, surprising even lower # than the 64. Eyeballing, H4 6i/7i really didn't look all that compact to me, fairly large not too far off from G25.
