G25 Iron Review (Low Handicapper)

Does anyone know the actual clubhead specs for the G25? I only ask because, although it seems possible, I can't "see" the visual differences between the G15, G20 and G25 irons. I had all of these side by side at Golf Galaxy and the difference from one generation to the next seemed negligible, at best. I have an excellent set of calipers and can take measurements of the G15 if someone can do the same for the G20/25. I'd like to know what, if any, difference there is.

I'm not saying the G25 is, or is not, a great iron. In fairness, I just want to address the fact that it is in NO way a svelte player's club. I would point out, that the differences between the topline and sole width between any of the G series is negligible, at best (.011" on the topline and .175" on the sole). Maybe the darker finish has something to do with the "slimmer" look?

I completely agree with you. I love the g25. I think it is a tremendous blend of fair looks and very forgiving performance but in no way is it a players cavity.

The darker finish definitely has something to do with the slimmer look. I put them next to my g20, at the first glance the g25 appears to be smaller, but you look at them long enough you realize they are really the same.

Agreed. Don't get me wrong, I think the G25 is a great club (only hit one time) but for many to wax like it is an MP33 with SGI forgiveness just isn't true. I don't own them, but used to sell many G5's and I would bet that many would be hard-pressed to tell a "real" difference on the course. Can't we just say that the G25 is the greatest PING G series iron? Why do people have to try and make it something it's not? I suspect that it soothes egos to think of it as more than a SGI, which it most certainly is. Alas, what do I know? I just drank the PING "Kool-Aid" this season by adding the, previously vaunted, G15's to the bag. So far, so good!

High handicap (14 GHIN), so take it FWIW, but currently comparing g15 vs g25. Was only quick-fit (lie board & ss), did not swap-out multiple shafts. Playing full rounds split odd-even bag & g15s still ahead by a nose.

Am guessing there's something about the AWT Reg shafts that I like vs CFS Reg, particularly on slight mishits (stingier feel & weak rights/lefts vs just weak rights). Awaiting an official demo day to get better fitting with g25s, figuring the 2-gen newer tech's gotta help my evolving swing, plus I really prefer the look of the g25s. Just my 2-cents.

I was in a Golfsmith a while ago and compared the g20s and g25s in hand right off the rack, all irons (3-UW). No comparison at all IMO...the 25s were way thinner and cleaner looking all the way around. The sole is not even close. To me, the 25s sole looks kinda like the i5s with a rear edge grind built in.

I'm not saying the 25s are players irons or as thin as the i5/i15, but they are nicely trimmed down. Not sure what it is (maybe a combo of the reduced offset/thinner top line and sole/dark color), but to me they look like a g20 that lost 50 lbs.

Look and feel are subjective. This person FEELS that the G25s LOOK more attractive than the G20s. They LOOK sleeker to his eye. Leave it at that. I know the measurements because I used to digital calipers to measure the OBJECTIVE differences but I SUBJECTIVELY feel the G25s are superior in terms of look and feel.

I don't really have a dog in this fight as the excessive offset keeps me from considering these. However, it appears from the pics above that much like the i20s, the G25s have a substantial portion of the sole relieved to the point the effective sole width is much less than the actual measurement.

Take a look at the 4 iron especially above. Somewhere between 30 to 50 percent of the aft portion of the sole has been beveled such that the playing surface is actually quite reasonable.

Has anyone made a hands on comparison (played) between the G25 and the i5 irons; Just by looking at them the G25 seem more forgiving, and the i5 look more of a players iron.

5 Handi here: I recently moved to the G25 irons from Titleist 712 MB's. I LOVE THESE IRONS!!!! In the past, I have had trouble with ground interaction and high flight/excessive spin with large/forgiving irons (hence my love of blades). However, these are great in both areas! These irons do everything I ask of them and the forgiveness is incredible!!! The only nit picky item would be these are a little more difficult to cut through long thick rough as compared to the MB's.

All in All - One of the best golf equipment decisions I have made!!!

I came from MP 32 and agree with everything you said. I too found the one pet pevee was out of the rough, nothing like a small blade to cut through the cabbage. I have pulled the U wedge and replaced it with my 50* Callaway X tour, have the matching 54 & 58 in the bag as well. It has been much better for me and I am going on three seasons with these wedges and know them like the back of my hand.

I got in 2 sets of irons this week. G25 w/ DGX100's and Taylormade R11's w/ stock KBS 90 stiff shafts. You know, over the years I've avoided playing game improvement clubs like the G25 and R11s of the world. Part of it had to do with the belief that these types of clubs would favor a draw or hook. Well that was not the case. These clubs hit just want go to go straight or move very slightly to the right or left. And they go HIGH. They are also super forgiving. It will be interesting to see how these clubs play in windy conditions but if you want to hit greens with ease then these are the clubs to play. It's still preliminary but the R11s seemed to be more consistent for my swing. Both of the 8 irons go higher than my Anser PW.

My comparisons were in hand up close. Of course looking down at address it would be much more difficult, but all the changes PING has done to the 25s makes them much more sleek to my eye. The sole between the two I could differentiate from a mile away. Topline a bit tougher for sure, but the 25s dark finish look sleeker. Just my experience.

Ok. The G25's got to come along for a 36 hole round on Sunday. The G25's are everything that the op described. Thanks OP for your fantastic review. It's because of your review that I purchased these clubs. My set has the DGX100's. The G25's are THE MOST FORGIVING irons I've ever played. They go high, straight, and fairly long considering that they do have juiced lofts. I've tried the G15's in the past with mixed results. The sole design of the G15's just did not do it for me and never bothered with the 20's as the sole design looked the same as the 15's. After the G15 semi fiasco i swore off of SGI clubs and went back to playing clubs like Titleist 710mbs, TP MC, Razr mb's, Razr X Forged, Ping Anser etc. But these G25s are a different animal. The current sole design really works great for my swing. The club glides through turf(not one fat shot) and the distance control was every bit as good as any blade I've ever played. This was extremely surprising. Perhaps it was the shaft. I've had good success with the DGX 100s over the years. Misses to the left? Nope. The G25s are not draw biased in any way and I happen to be a player that will throw any left biased golf club back into cyperspace pronto. The G25's are basically straight biased. :D In fact, I miss way more shots to the left with my Ansers than with the G25's. They do hit pretty high but it's not a ballooning flight. My round was pretty windy and while I was initially concerned about the high ball flight, it turned out to be nothing. Contrary to popular opinion, these clubs can be worked. No. Not as much as a blade but they are workable and I had no trouble hitting fades and draws. I also found these irons to be less flyer impacted than the Ansers. I've had some real flyer issues with the Ansers but had none with the G25's. I shot even par over the last 27 holes and the G25's were a big part of that. If not for a thin shot out of the greenside bunker on my last hole, it's 2 under. The G25's are my gamers now and I'm selling my other iron sets (TP MC's and Ping Ansers). The G25's outperform those clubs on a whole different level. The iron game has been the weakest link and now has become a strength.

I was at the pga superstore and tried these out after reading this thread. I am a 6 handicap with a fairly smooth tempo and I am not a long hitter by any means - just steady. I am 49 and started playing graphite a year ago. First I tried the 7 iron with the ping graphite shaft. Ball was carrying roughly 150 yards with total of 155 yards, 100 mph ball speed with a 21 degree launch angle and 5500 spin. Next was the standard steel shaft - ball carried a few yards less as was the total (147 and 152 respectively). Ball definitely wanted to go straight. I did shank 2 which I blame on the lack of warm up, wearing jeans, and switching back and forth from the two shafts. Of course, it could be me! The club was very straight as advertised and very forgiving. I would definitely need to be fitted as although I prefer graphite, these felt too light altogether. I currently play fujikura 75 gram graphite in my current Epons. Any shaft suggestions for this head?

Well,
I just landed my G25 irons on Friday last week and got to play them side by side all weekend vs my Anser 2012's. a little background on me, I was a Ping Cubfitter for many years and have owned every set since the i3+ blades. My short list of favorites are i3+ blades, G5, i15 and s56, anser 2012. During the 2 years I played with G5 irons, I went from a 2 HDCP to a +2 and have been inching up ever since. My favorites clubs were the G5, but I always wished they could make that head with less offset (or influencing left-shots). The s56 are dynamite, but I don't play but 2-3x per month and the ansers were a logical step up and are really good. Now that I've tried the g25 irons, I get the best of a few different worlds, 1) more forgiveness now that my HDCP is back to 0, and have retired to customer/weekend golf, 2) I can still work them ball slightly (but don't need to anymore) and they don't balloon like my old G5 irons.

I built the G25 with zz65, hard stepped once and even into the wind I get a medium trajectory and am easily 1/2 to full club longer.

I'm having a hard time parting ways with my anser irons (s300) because they look so damn good, but results are results and looks like they will be on the bay by weeks end.

The TFC 198i graphites are 86g in stiff and 74g in regular. So weight wise you are right there with the Fujis. I play 85gr NV Comp shafts in my current Srixons, and when I hit the G25 graphites these felt just as good.
