Driving iron shaft help needed badly!

byoshio82

Going to turn my P790 3 iron into a driving iron. Just not anywhere to demo such a beast locally. Pondering the HZRDUS Black 105 6.5 as I really enjoy the HZRDUS shafts I’ve played previously, Aldila Rogue Black Hybrid X as I have Aldila Rogue Black 80X’s in my fairways. Anything else I’m missing. Haven’t liked the GD TOUR AD DI shafts I’ve tried previously so skipping that option. Potentially a Recoil shaft as I have like the UST products I’ve used in the past maybe a 110 F5 or 125 F5.

I am currently playing KBS $-Taper 130X shafts in all my irons and love them but would like to use this 3 iron in place of my 5 wood when I play shorter tighter courses to find the fairway more often. Looking for something to go about 250 with roll out and think the lighter weight would help give me the little bit of extra yardage I need while using the 3 iron.

Appreciate any input.

Driving iron experiments usually go with a lot of trial and error. You never really know how the pairings will go.

You can use other successful pairings as a baseline. My main suggestion is to add a bit of length and try to use a 100g + shaft like you mentioned. I think it would go great with hzrdus 105. Other darlings are the tensei pro white, atmos Black. Can’t go wrong with any of them

Probably need to add bit of lead tape as well.

Good luck

Compared to hzrdus 105 I dunno. Kbs hybrid is really nice but with a high launching p790, hes likely not getting the bullets he wants. Unless you get the 105x and there arent many user reviews on that model

I get some solid results from the $-Taper just not the distance I’m looking for and would like something a little lighter in a driving iron setup. Thanks for the suggestion I’ll do some experimenting.

Any suggestions on tipping these shafts? I’ve read in some threads 2” and others say not to tip them at all.

OTI Tour 80x

Looking for something a little heavier as my fairways already play almost 90 grams.

I stuck an Atmos HB Blue 8x in my P790 3-Iron. It’s been a nice combo and I’m seeing a carry of about 245y on Trackman with it (I don’t have other numbers in front of me right now, sorry). It’s a nice combo.

Unfortunately I’ve found that you do need to build these as trial and error. I’m testing $-Taper shafts in my irons right now so I did grab an extra 2-iron shaft to try in the P790 (I’ll build it at 39.5”). I’m curious to see how it compares. When I hit my 40.125” Atmos powered P790 3-iron side by side with a P790 4-iron with a PX 6.0 the yardage gap was 12-15y but I did find the heavier 4-iron to be easier to hit and it had better dispersion. Peak and AoD we’re ab the same as well. So, maybe matching iron shafts is the way to go???

Thanks for the info! Good to know. I’m loving the $-Tapers in my irons. Wedges the 130 might be a bit too much for my swing as I’ve seemed to lose a lot of zip.

Trial and Error,

In my case , I end up with 70 grams graphite graphite , Regular flex. My Swing Speed is 90 mph class.

I tried 57 grams graphite before, the ball always fade or pull to the right direction.

No tipping , installed As Is by golf technician. I don't know if he was lazy to cut or he is corrrect about no tipping. He also mentioned about kicking stuffs at the tip section.

I REALLY like the Aldila Rogue Black 110MSI 105H in my hybrid and since you already know and like the Rogue Blacks then that seems like a good choice. Tough to find though. Also if you'd rather your driving iron be more of a low bullet machine then the HZRDUS shaft you mentioned might be a better fit for that.

I have 105 HM3 Black Tie in my Vapor Fly Pro 2 iron. Highly recommend. Can be found for pretty cheap on ebay. I also have a MP-25 3 iron head that i want to use in my second set, thinking about trying Recoil Proto 105 in it. Anybody have experience with them?

Ive experienced with quite a few myself. Ive played Aldila Tour Green, Blue in the 85g weights, Ad-di 95g, and have a 95g hzrdus black. Ive gotten the best results with roll out from the aldila tours. When I wasn't getting along with my driver at the end of last season I started using my UDI 2 iron with the aldila tour green and i was getting 240-250 on roll out all day and right down the pipe. Ive just ordered 2 790 3's, 1 with the ad-di and 1 with the hzrdus and I'm curious to see what they can do. We will see here soon.

+1. The X flex low launch driving iron market is pretty small so don't get frustrated if you can't find a big demo selection.

If you want to go the lower cost but good performance route the tried and true NV 105 X is still a great shaft. The Matrix Altus Tour Black can be had very cheaply too. I still play one of those in my driving iron. Neither will break the bank and are good shafts.

This is an interesting topic. I have a Ping Rapture DI. I think it is one of the best clubs Ping made, but messing around with shafts. I'm thinking about trying a Recoil shaft. I guess it depends if your prefer the feel of a long iron or more of a fairway wood. You say driving iron I assume you would not ever use on approach shots? If so you might be careful going to low with little spin. I also saw a lot of NV Proto shafts. Usually get good reviews even for an older shaft. GLWTS.

Ended up ordering the Recoil 110 F5 to start out with. I will post my results once I get some reps in with this setup. Thanks for all the suggestions.
