Battle of the $20 Urethane Balls?

gohatters

Recommended Posts

My preferred golf balls are the Snell MTB (haven't tried the new variants), but they're still a bit expensive for my everyday use.

Lately I've been playing the MG C4 balls which have performed very well at the price of $20/dz. Solid distance and good approach and greenside spin. It seems like they're a step back from the ProV or Snell but not THAT much difference. I could easily just stick with those but it got me to thinking. I like the new direct to consumer trend but many of those are still in the $33-43 range for a dozen of the urethane 3/4 piece options.

Whats the best urethane 3 or 4 piece that's reliably around $20 a dozen? (call it $15-25) I know many balls will go on sale a few times a year to bring cost into this range but I'm talking about a ball that's always near $20. Can you help me add to the list? I might try to do a real comparison over the summer.

- MG C4

- Cut Blue

- Cut Gray

- Kirkland Signature (although availability is an issue)

- Top Flight Gamer Urethane

Are there more I'm missing?

The MG C4 is fantastic. I like it over the KSig because it feels softer to me and it now comes in Yellow. The K3 is very good and a feels softer than the KSig.

Last year I played the Bridgestone RX that I bought on sale, but still not at the MG C4 price point. The MG is its equal without a doubt at half the price and it is available always at $20 bucks a dozen.

And they make great golf gloves.

I emailed MG and if I remember correctly the compression is like 90. Seems pretty hard.

Thanks. I don't know why companies mainly offer high compression balls in this category. I did notice Golf Galaxy has 6 balls for $10 on the QST. I believe that is a 70 compression ball.

You can have mine, didn't care for them at all

Vice, if you buy in bulk is about 25

Yeah, and Snell is like $26 and change. But that's 0.50 more per ball. And i eventually decided that's a good compromise for me. I like the Snell MTB (black now) at $26/dz and think it's worth a little more. Still a great value in grand scheme of things.

But for those who play often or lose many the extra $6/dz adds up.

I have both Cut urethane balls and I'm going to compare to the C4 once green fees drop here in FL next month.

I currently use the Vice Pro Soft but want to hear about the Top-Flite Gamer Urethane if anybody has tried them

I posted in the other Urethane ball thread so TL;DR: For me no noticable loss in distance, also the covers held together very nicely for me, medium soft feel, medium high spin (for me as I typically don't impart much spin anyways). I can't justify $45 a dozen for ProVs or CS's, and I don't buy enough to reach Vice or Cut's discount rates. At $19.99/dozen it is a very nice 3 piece urethane ball.

I tried. Seems like a nice ball but durability is an issue as the cover shreds easily.

If you really want to keep it under $20/dozen total cost for new balls then just buy the K3 and get used to the excess spin. It's by far the cheapest alternative (for Costco members at least) and even though it's just about my least-favorite urethane ball I'd rather play it than any Surlyn ball out there.

Of course I'm not a Costco person so I'd probably have to up my budget to $25 where there are lots of options. Including the Maxfli Tour and Tour X from DSG.

Costco members only. It's more or less a constant deal although occasionally like anything they can go out of stock.

$23.99 plus $4.99 S&H for each pack of two dozen. With sales tax it works out somewhere in the $15/dozen range. Heck of a ball for that kind of price.

Usually needs to be bought online although I think some stores sometimes have stocked them.

May favorite ball that I have played in this range was the Ksig 4 piece. I didn't notice any drop off compared to the biggest name balls. I've seen too many bad results with the 3 piece ball to give it a try.

Played the C4s for a while, when I would lose 6-10 ball/round, and liked them, but a touch on the hard side for me. I will only play urethane covers, so as a guy who was constantly pulling our a fresh ball, the price was right now these. After the Ksigs 4 piece (When you can find them), I'm not sure this deal can be beat for value.

Then Vice Pro seemed like a good ball. I played a couple dozen and don't remember having any extreme thoughts, good or bad. I'd consider giving them another go.

I'm currently playing TP5x because I haven't found a ball that plays as well in the wind. It's long, has the short game spin I like and good feel. I might lose a ball or two per round now a days, so the cost doesn't bother me.

That be me. Have a ton of them. Recently offered to unload some of them but person never bit.

Cut golf balls have a serious durability issue for me. DSG currently has the new Maxfli (Tour and Tour X) 2 for $50 and if you are like me I always have a $10 off coupon. You can’t go wrong with that deal. As others have said, KSig3s are your best deal if you are a Costco Member. MG Golf C4s are also very good value balls.

I’m just a big fan of being able to walk in a store to pick up balls. As a matter of fact, while typing this reply I just picked up a Srixon ZStar 6pack for $10 from DSG.

Certainly if you're willing to go up to $2-ish per ball (around $25 a dozen) there are several good options. The past decade has been very kind to golfers in terms of golf ball engineering and manufacturing.

Twenty years ago we'd have thought today's $2 golf balls would be impossible to make and if they were possible they'd be illegal and if they were legal, that kind of performance and durability would cost five times as much.
