Saw something on the golf course yesterday that gave me hope

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I saw two course rangers escort a group off the golf course I was playing at. Since nobody has the stones anymore to enforce pace of play I'm assuming that they were kicked off for not following the cart path only rule for the day due to wet conditions. Anyhow just thought I'd share my joy as I've been a long time whiner about playing public golf and haven't seen anyone at the public tracks that I play try to enforce any sort of rules for quite some time. It's probably sad that it has come to the point where I get enjoyment out of seeing someone get booted off a course.

I need to join a private club.

You should absolutely call that club (or better, go in), ask for either the head pro or the general manager, and tell them what you witnessed and how great you thought it was. They will get a lot of negative feedback, but if they get positive feedback from somebody in the public who is saying you completely support them removing groups that are not following the rules, then it matters.

This to is a huge problem, one of the clubs I play at I swear they have a lecture for members on how not to repair ball marks and being one of the younger members I also get the stink eye from the fine older gents on occasion. I would absolutely contact the pro and praise them for enforcement.> @Murphy76 said:

If watching a group get escorted off a public course brings this much joy, he’s going to be positively elated when he joins a private club and sees a member get the boot. Not a grander sight in the game.

In all my years playing the game I've never seen it happen. Typically the Marshalls around here spend most of their time fishing for golf balls in the lakes.

When I was playing public golf I started gravitating more towards 2 courses where the marshals were more active. One would warn groups that were slow that they would have to skip a hole if they didn’t pick up the pace and then actually enforce it on the rare occasions that the group did not pick up the pace. The other course I don't think anyone was ever asked to skip a hole but in my recollection when a group got a talking to they almost always picked up the pace. Those courses were on the higher end of cost to play.

The only times I have seen players escorted off were for fighting, excessive drinking, damaging the course or in one case a player getting in an argument with a homeowner and then teeing up a ball on an adjacent tee and trying to hit the home owners house. That ended with the police escorting the player off the course.

There may be no getting around the occasional rude, inconsiderate golfer. I have an in between situation as a member of a semi-private club which is non-equity but those of us that are members do have a sense of ownership having joined and committed to the golf course, which is excellent. The public can make tee times but during peak season but the green fee is steep and these golfers seem to appreciate the conditions and their etiquette and course demeanor is fine. Big revenue generators are the frequent outings which typically include golf and lunch or dinner. The problem is that some (not all) of these golfers have not paid for the outing and are there to drink and eat with some golf mixed in. Repairing a ball mark on the green or fairway divots is not in their repertoire. But, it keeps the dues reasonable and the maintenance crew does a great job of repairing any abuse.

Many marshals may be doing it for the free golf, but why not have some self-respect and do the job right? If someone is being a jerk or breaking one course rule or another (or very possibly ruining the day for the groups behind them), they should be at least talked to by the marshal. If the nonsense continues, further action may well be warranted. As for your last comment, I can't imagine any golf course that would want someone who'd "just ride around and go through the motions".

I don't mean to be overly critical, but everybody I know wants to have an enjoyable time when they pay good money to tee it up at any course. If the group ahead of you is being really slow or otherwise ruining the experience, I expect the course to address the situation. Don't you?

One of the best things I ever saw was at a course I worked at when I was younger. There was a group doing a bunch of dumb stuff, damaging the course and carts potentially and they were warned. Kept doing it. On 9 tee box the marshal said they were done and to drive back to the club house and leave. They refused. So he took their cart keys and drove off. They were stuck there or had to walk back. They walked straight to their cars.
