120g high launch iron shaft?

00bolt

Recommended Posts

Currently play Modus 105 shafts in my irons but wanting something heavier. I’d like to go back to 120g without losing my high launch and ballflight.

Any ideas of a good steel iron shaft?

There is no guarantee that a high launch bend profile will result in higher ball flight, so it might be a case of a combination of a bend profile you like, along with weaker lofts, to get the heft you want, with no loss of flight.

The Modus 125 shares much of the Modus 105’s bend profile, all be it in a stronger package, and comes in around the target weight range. The KBS Tour Flighted also fits the brief. The expensive Oban CT 115 while a touch light also has Modus 105 bend profile similarities.

To be honest, I’m not 100% sure what I like. Before my current set of clubs, I had the AMT S300 shafts and thought I liked them just fine. In fact, that’s still in my 4 iron.

Then I replaced my irons and put in Modus 105. I had always heard great things about Modus. But thought that I liked lighter shafts. So went with the modus 105.

I don’t necessarily hate my setup. But every time I go into my local big box stores I grab random clubs off the shelf to hit and they always seem to be 120g shafts and I hit them well and the feeling seems more stable if that makes sense?

Last few days to a week I have gone up there nearly everyday and hit the Apex MB with the Project X 6.0 shaft because I’m tempted to buy these irons so bad right now. And this combination of club head and shaft feel great to me.

At PGA Superstore yesterday I was hitting their 7 iron on their machine with a launch of around 20-21 degrees which was providing great numbers. But then today at Golf Galaxy the exact same club and shaft was giving me only 18-19 degrees of launch. But swing speed and ball speed were nearly identical and I was losing about 5 yards of carry with the lower launch.

Sooo I’m not sure if it’s possibly the balls ar these different stores? Or just me swinging differently a day apart. But I’d like to assure myself I’m getting the 20-21 degrees of launch vs the 18-19 degrees when it comes to real world. As the 20-21 degrees seems to put up better numbers overall. When I look up project x shafts, everything says it’s a low launch shaft. So I’m wondering if today’s lower numbers could possibly be more accurate. However the balls used yesterday with the higher launch numbers definitely seemed like nicer balls. At least they were uniform and not something different every shot. Not sure how much that has to do with it at all.

But that’s basically what I’ve got going on in my head

I have played a lot of shafts. The KBS Tour are high launch. The 120 is S flex. Should work well. I wanted a high launching shaft and the Mizuno optimizer as well as iteach recommended the KBS Tour X and I love them. Definitely higher launch for me.

This is a dumb question as I know what some will say. But would it be worth being fitted for a shaft at a charge of $150? My local fitter who has a great reputation for fitting charges $150. He says he has over 400 shafts in his store and a fitting usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours. (I’m sure a lot of those are driver shafts). Point is. I’m sure he would do a great job. But at $150 for the fitting. Then the cost of the new shafts. Then cost of labor to yank my old shafts and put in the new shafts and new grips. Seems like a lot of money. Is it truly worth that or do you think I’d pretty much be ok grabbing a set of Modus 120, Project X or KBS off eBay and having them installed for a fraction of the cost?

I agree with the kbs tour 120. If you want a little extra night on the longer irons get the flt.

I loved the modus 105 but struggled with the weight in the shorter iron and switched back to the KBS tour flt and have had really good luck.

It would be cheaper to go get fit for a new set of irons and sell the set you have. If that guy is a good fitter, go see him and have him put you into the right head and shaft combo.

I play the Modus 130S in my Mizuno JPX FliHi Hybrid and my Taylor Made P790 4-PW and hit them plenty high. Also, in my JPX 919Forged 4-PW I play the Project XLZ 6.0 SS1X just about as high maybe a smidge lower than the P790 with the 130S shafts.

Both are great shafts for holding flights with the edge in smoothness to the Modus 130S with ease of working left or right and for me in the P790 irons while the PX LZ 6.0 SS1X are really consistent and always seem to go relatively straight vs the Modus. I’m sure the heads play some way into the reults but in the end I bag both sets and play to similar yardages with my preference going to the Modus 130S for feel and ease.
