New AVX test balll

Here's hoping the current ball is unchanged. I know I'm probably the 1% of golfers that fits into in perfectly, but I've wanted a ball like this for a long time. Don't change it on me, Titleist!!!

I've been playing the AVX for several months now and really like it although I've been told it's totally wrong for my game. I'm a senior (will be 70 next month) and my swing speed is in the low to mid 80s. I've done extensive on course testing all though the year and the AVX performs the best for me from the driver to the putter. It took some time to adjust my chipping as short shots do not check like they do with the Pro-V-1. However, the added distance off the tee is worth the trade-off. I really hope they don't change it much, if at all as it's my favorite ball right now. Hopefully I'll get several dozen from Santa so I can continue to play the existing design at least through next year.

From very little testing but lots of research I decided to buy 4 dozen AVXs recently.

Played a couple of rounds and so far liking the balls. PROS:

Feel is exactly where i want to it to be. It is definitely much much softer than the ProV and has a real muted sound. No click at all. Probably not as soft as a ChromeSoft which is a good thingAmazing off the putter and with chipping. Distance control with my Putts has got much better. Nothing flies off too fast and really impressed in this department which I didnt really expectLove the flight with the irons. Nothing balloons in the air no matter how hard I hit it. Definitely got a good club longer over my ProV with a piercing trajectory and longer carry - although a definite notice in apex.NEGATIVES:

Driver flight is too low, especially for the winter conditions. I can't hit high bombs anymore like I used to. I have picked up some accuracy though so will persevere through to the summer. The carry could be a concernWedge spin on full shots is definitely not as good. This will definitely be a problem in the summer on my course which gets very very firmSuch an incredible ball in the fact that it does exactly what is described. Really a great accomplishment for Titleist. I will have to see how I go as courses in the UK are definitely quite 'seasonal'. Loving the feel of it so far and the reduced iron spin. Not sure if I will fully convert however - there are some negatives but the positives at the moment are really winning me over. Will need some more testing.

I would love to know if any pros actually play this.

This would make me happy. I went back to the ProV1 for more spin, but I LOVED the AVX. It was almost perfect for me, but the lack of greenside spin killed me.

Well, the day must be close at hand since I just got my email from PGATSS about the lowered price on the "previous generation" AVX.

That's the reason for my searching for this thread.

If the ONLY (real) change is a bit more spin, I'm in. Again. Changing to AVX from Chrome Soft I picked up 5 yards per club with the irons with just about the same landing results into greens - difference isn't worth mentioning but yes, on chips, while I've gotten used to the extra runout, it does annoy be that on some "touch shots" I can't get it to bite.

A buddy of mine from up north, who's down for the Winter, can hit his V1 from about 20-30 yards and have it bite nicely. He does take the high route and while I'm not comfortable with that shot myself, and my results are partially due to hitting a lower shot, the AVX just won't do that on the touch shots where I DO take the higher route.

With the driver I feel like I've picked up a bit on carry, virtually NO ballooning into the wind and it mostly definitely rolls out more than the Chrome Soft or the previous V1x I used to play. Down here in SoFla, my drives used to basically hit and stop next to its pitch mark. Now I see from a little to a fair bit of rollout on a properly flighted and struck shot.

Just yesterday I was considering trying a sleeve of V1 balls just to see if the added spin might help me around the greens. The V1 feels as soft as the AVX off the irons and the putter. Hope the new AVX comes out soon so I can try them before I leave the country for a few months (balls are 25-30% more expensive in Asia LOL).

New AVX has been announced. Still lower ball flight, but now with more greenside spin. I'll try a sleeve of the new ones this Spring. I liked the current one, but the lack of spin with irons and wedges killed it for me.https://www.titleist.com/golf-balls/avx

I don't believe they are - the EXP-01 had a different (cheaper) urethane cover and different dimple pattern than the AVX.

I didn't even know that Titleist was coming out with a new version of the AVX and when I got the email yesterday, one of the first things I did was run to GolfWRX to see what everyone was saying about it. I'm pretty on par with what a lot of guys are saying on here. The first version of the AVX was a really great ball. The only problem I had with it was the greenside spin but as others have said, I quickly got used to the ball is just going to run out a little bit so play your wedge shots that way. Some have said that can't hit this ball with a driver because of performance, but I saw yardage increase with the driver as well. My SS is consistently around 108, give or take a couple MPH, and I even compared with a ProV1 and saw better performance. I loved the sound and feel of it too with every club in the bag it was just the greenside spin. So if that's there only improvement of the 2020 AVX, I will definitely be stocking up on these. Obviously I'll want to play it side by side with the old AVX and the 19 ProV1 but I'm excited for it if what I'm hearing is true!

I loved the AVX pretty much everywhere, but as stated by one poster above, it just seemed to die off the driver. Given most of my drives seem to find the rough these days, perhaps that shouldn't be much of a concern for me, but it is.

Conversely, the AVX was always a solid 5 - 10 yards longer off my irons, which I loved.

I'd add that not being able to buy discounted logo-overrun AVX has also played into my sticking with the V1x.

More likely, he simply loses a little ball speed because of the compression of the ball. It's not that much lower spin off the driver than the other Titleist balls, but you could be lossing 2-3MPH of ball speed easily. Combine that with it's lower flight, and you'll probably give up some driver distance. The idea is that from a strokes gained perspective you more than make up for that by the additional distance you gain off the irons.

If the new AVX flies the same as the old, but somehow spins more on greenside shots, Titleist will have performed a miracle. And I will be grateful.

Keep in mind that "spins more" doesn't mean "spins as much as (say a ProV1)". I'll be looking for that additional spin shortly.

Just saw them yesterday at PGATSS and bought a dozen (leaving for a trip soon to SE Asia for 3 months and balls are 25% higher there). I figure they can't be so different that I wouldn't want to play them.

So I'll give 'em a try soon and (maybe) see what happens.

That's fine. If they have a bit more check around the greens, but still fly/spin the same way on full shots, I'll be elated.

Chipped and putted with the new and old balls today.

Definitely feels softer off both the putter and wedges. Both need a little more "oomf" with the new ball. New ball definitely bites a little more on chips.

Distance and flight, obviously don't know from today's testing. I'll play with it tomorrow.

As one poster responded, it was more of a compression issue than a spin issue of the driver. It was odd as I loved the feel, but every time I thought I'd absolutely annihilated one, I'd find that the distance was a lacking a bit.

Maybe it just means time for a new driver? :D
