#2 is good. The price is insane. I bet everyone who didn't like it would like it more for $150 instead $400 or whatever it is to play it. I would.

Think of it this way - If you had a Pinehurst membership and it didn't cost anything to play any of the nine courses above your dues, out of 10 rounds how many are you playing on #2? I'm definitely not saying 0. Probably 2 or 3 for me.

Agreed brother. When I went down with that #influencer Trip. That’s the only course that had to be paid for -

Im glad I played it but enjoy other courses as much

i really need to learn some DC math. a new club comes in for every three clubs that go out? hmmm.

in very WRXy news i'm considering buy a new rim for my basketball hoop. Yes. Just the actual metal rim. When I was putting sand in the base the whole thing it feel forward and bent the rim up. So the rim isn't level. It's not the end of the world but it really annoys it. I took it off, put one end on a car jack and bounced on it with all my weight. It did nothing. still every bit as bent.

Anyone use the INDEX / MATCH function in Excel to build tables? Building a scoring spreadsheet that hopefully makes it easier on the weekends when everyone literally still writes things out - but I hit a snag.

I have a spot to enter the front and back net scores - which should be all you have to do and then the spreadsheet should calculate the rest. There are sections for Front, Back and Total scores. Using the SMALL function it pulls the smallest three from each column and then the INDEX MATCH pulls the persons name into the section as well.

It works great unless there is a tie. And actually if you enter a tie, the scores pull correctly. But namewise, it just pulls the first persons name rather than ensure all names are represented. Is there a way to write the INDEX MATCH to include some sort of "<>" caveat? Sorry, the problem should be self explanatory but sometimes I can figure it out by writing it out.

(pauses)

Nope, didnt work this time.

This is my "one year later" review of #2.

The first thing I think about when I think about #2 is "I can't remember the holes".

I've played #2 and #4 once each, and I can tell you pretty much every single hole on #4 and the shots I hit. When I think back on 2, I basically picture every hole like, "oh, it's sorta flat, with a slight bend, waste areas on both sides filled with little tufts of fescue, kind of a raised green that runs off in 4 directions."

The most distinct hole is somewhere around 13 or 14 where the one hole goes out and then up to the right (like #6 at Timbers at Troy) and the next hole tees off right there and comes back down. The section on the front that goes out with the long uphill par 4 and the downhill par 5 coming back was nice. 18 is good, but not great, IMO.

I didn't like how there were roads and houses right on the course right off the bat. #9 (?) was a cool par 3 (nice green) but I missed the green left and I was standing near a guy's driveway.

Unmemorable holes and nearness of civilization are two things that devalue a course to me.

That's the negatives.

Here's the flip side :

I only played it once and it clearly has charms that are not revealed on a single play. Sometimes those albums you love on first listen are not the ones you love 5 years later, but the ones you're not sure about, you find yourself hearing more stuff in them with subsequent listens and 10 years later you realize, "wow I've put that album on a ton."

I like a course with challenging short game shots and some of the things I remember most on that course are some great up and downs (from the group). The flipside of that is that there were some very "close" shots that get rejected, wind up against a fescue tuft with a downhill lie, and you're chipping 6 feet up hill to a green that slopes away from you. Yeah, yeah. . .I can hear defenders saying, "well, don't miss there", but fact of the matter is, when I miss a green, I prefer my options from there to be par or bogey, not bogey/double or more. It's not a matter of "fair" (which is not something I care about) but more like "playable" -- and in a lot of places. But, maybe that's a limitation of my thinking. . .maybe missing a green should lead to doubles, but it's impossible for me to consider that "fun" or something I want to return to.

You take courses like Streamsong, or Bandon and you certainly get those humps and bumps and greens that kick balls away, but you also get bowls and slopes that feed balls towards the hole. I don't remember anything like that at #2. Sure, it will reward good shots, but there was nothing "favorable". It's all unfavorable.

And I'm sure I'd figure out driving lines, good targets into green, how to hit a few shots I need and I'd probably learn to love it IF I PLAYED IT A LOT. But, I'm never going to. At best I'm going to play it every couple of years, when I don't have my A game, and I'm probably hung over and just trying to have fun on a golf trip. And it's really expensive, especially in season.

You buy me a plane ticket tomorrow to any course in America that I can just go play. . .#2 is behind everything "good" that I've played. . .including Pine Needles, Mid Pines, Tobacco, Dormie, and #4 just to name a few courses within 60 minutes of #2.

So, yeah, if I played everything in America, I have a hard time imagining I'd have it in my top 100. But, I also know myself enough to know that could change.

Make me pick a side : overrated. but open minded.

#2 is unique because of the greens. I respect that Donnie said "fuck it I'm making a course with all upside down saucer greens don't @ me". It's like a concept album.

The price is stupid though, especially with really good golf courses within 5 miles of there. It's weird that it's so busy. I guess most people pay the $195 upcharge on packages instead of the $400 rack rate.

I believe that 2MoreTerpz might be making the point that if the course was $150, people might not like it so much.

Let's start a conspiracy theory. (Rick could write this better, but I put too much coffee in the french press this morning)

Donald Ross designed Pinehurst #1. He thought an upside down saucer green could be interesting, so he built it on one hole.

Meanwhile: There's a loud obnoxious member at Pinehurst named Elmer Birmingham or Cy Hinchman or Heinie Clarkson or some early 1900's name who is always around. He's definitely an alcoholic but since alcoholism hasn't been invented yet, people assume he's just always ship-lagged from his trans-atlantic steamboat rides to mainland europe to meet with Napoleon or who the fuck ever.

Anyway, Nap Higgins or whatever his stupid name is loses a $0.03 nassau on PH #1 and blames it on Donald Ross's funky green. Every chance he gets he tells Donald Ross that he owes him $0.03 because of his outrageous audacity to design that type of green. Out of spite, Don Ross designs #2 with all upside down greens because he's already collected his fee up front and doesn't care. He is immediately considered a genius by the unknowing public.
