If people want to follow rules for the sake of following rules - they should also do it where they live and not gripe about other people following the rules where they live. Not talking about you BTW, just talking.

There are a number of cases in my office and I'm here 60 hours a week every other week. I've also been to Walmart, Target, Safeway at least 2-3x each in the last month. The virologist on our team said that with all the measures we have in place, golf is one of the safest things you can do right now. He's the smartest guy I've met on the topic so far, so rules or no rules, if I'm going to listen to anyone, its going to be him.

Between work and having to make a half dozen trips to find toilet paper - I'm OK with taking my chances on the course playing in twosomes with twenty open minutes on either side of me. The idea that there are places where that is "against the rules" but spending a half hour inside a covid petri dish like Walmart is "OK with the rules" is absolutely ludicrous and goes to everything that City said.

I'll put it this way : I'm not traveling to play golf and I think it's MARGINALLY stupid to do so, but Sully's argument is "what you're doing is safe (or safer than going to work), but you shouldn't do it because you're not following the rules".

I don't follow rules just because they're rules.

I'm staying put or going to non-dense areas outside. But I'm not doing it because I'm supposed to or because the governor said to. I'm doing it because if I have it, I don't want to give it to people and if I don't have it, I don't want to get it from people. We're not doing ANYTHING that puts us into contact with others except grocery shopping. We're not getting take out. We're not getting delivery. Even though those are both "legal".

I just watched that video about how covid kills you by restricting oxygen flow to organs. It does not sound like fun.

Like I said, I agree with you guys on the overall safety. I’m not arguing about that. It just seems odd that people are going out of their way to break the rules in order to avoid making a trivial sacrifice.

I've got issues that put me as "high risk", but even if I didn't, Kent just said he's going to hospitals everyday and remarked how dangerous it is. I get that he's got to be there.

But then he's going to play golf with other people. Look at it from their perspective. That's the reason I'm not doing it. You have no idea how other people are living their lives.

I'm way more concerned about bringing it home to my wife (or kids if I had them).

It's not about what you're willing to risk as an individual. It's what you're willing to do to put your family at risk.

Golf is allowed in DC as recreation/exercise. EPP is opening back up tomorrow. I'll be playing both Saturday and Sunday. It's my exercise for the week. Rules are rules.

 

In all seriousness, I am not standing near anybody or touching anything other than my own belongings. It feels safe enough for me. The grocery store is definitely way less safer right now than a golf course.

 

I get why people argue against playing, and you're not wrong, either.

Would be genuinely interested to know how the MD guys would play this if they lived in VA. If you were a member at a club that was taking all the precautions, the smartest scientist you worked with said it was safe and it was completely "within the rules" - if that piece matters to you.

Passing this along - The Stay at Home order in DC states the following regarding allowable outdoor activities (which golfing is specifically defined): Outdoor activities should not be conducted with persons other than those from one’s own household.

That means NPS is knowingly breaking the rules because singles can make tee times at GolfDC courses. Reading that line/rule about outdoor activities needing to be with household members makes me shake my head at anybody going into any buildings these days that aren't their own residence.

drop clothes at back door go take a shower.

the same thing I did at woodmore and truly miss it. Wife didn’t like it but “allowed” it.
Now I’m playing CoD a lot and hitting balls in my back yard. Grass is going to look worse than a grass range after a hive event

if MD courses opened tomorrow, I'd go play. I think it's a very low risk activity.

If they said, "you can go bowling, too", I wouldn't go bowling. Or to a bar. Or play basketball.

The only people think the reversal about rules is funny or ironic is because they think my argument about things like "relief from divots" is "you follow the golf rules because they're the rules" which is not my argument, never has been and never will be. You follow the rules of golf because you can't allow for judgments to happen on the course that could be judged differently by different members of the field. That's why everything in the rule book is black and white. If more people understood that, there would be a lot less of "the rules of golf are stupid" talk or "we should use common sense.".

if turf valley was open i'd take tomorrow and wednesday off of work and walk as many holes as my body allowed. but it's not and i'm not.

 

i know a guy who almost certainly has it. he lives out toward the shenandoah valley. his doctor told him "do not come here. you almost certainly have it. we can't test you and there is no one near here who can". not great. his wife ... is a nurse

Everything in the golf rule book is black and white?? If that was the case, they wouldn't need a 'Decisions' book.

The decisions (generally speaking, I'm not going through the book to find every example) are for situations where the rule wasn't clear, or the rules weren't comprehensive. That doesn't mean the rule wasn't black & white. By "black and white" I basically mean there are no rules that allow for judgments like, "you don't get relief from a divot except when the divot is really bad" or "that ground should be ground under repair, but they didn't mark it."

I have driven past Turf Valley several times in the last few days and the course looks fabulous. Aeration and top dressing greens occurring yesterday. It is going to be pristine when you guys get back out there. Both Turf and Timbers have become exercise walker heaven. Families, joggers and bike riders galore on both courses. I did see some kids playing catch with a baseball on Timbers #7 green the other day so not sure what the condition will be there.
