5 or 7 wood?

Forged5

Recommended Posts

Hope all are healthy and well!

Course in regular times I would go into the store and demo demo demo...

Turning 60 in June and a low spin player. Play off an 8. Game is control.

Could use a higher launching, softer landing, club in between my G400 22* hybrid (high launching!! point and shoot) and my Ping 410 4 wood 16.5* (low launch off the deck) .

Have zero experience with either 5 or 7 wood and their versatility and ease of use, advantages of one over the other...

Was thinking in my head a 7 wood is like a larger hybrid but high launch. 5 wood looks big to my eye (just based on looking at them in stores) but maybe I'm missing the idea of the versatility a 5 wood can offer.

Also stuck between lofting up a 5 wood to 19* or lofting a 7 wood down to 20* for example.

Might be convinced to add a G400 19* 3 hybrid...but from everything Ive read a similarly lofted fairway wood launches much higher.

Love to hear your input and experiences.

Thanks and FORE!!!!

(NOTE - WITH HELP FROM YOU ALL THE DECISION(s) WAS MADE. DETAILS IN POST 18)

be well and stay safe :)

Get both. It might take you a season to determine which option you think works better, but both are viable.

In my case, I go 4-wood, 5-wood, 7-wood (all Ping G25), 5-hybrid (Ping G410). I'm 67; you may need all of the woods when you get to my age!

At our age, I think that the 4W and 5W would give very similar results - it does for me at least. The 7W / Callaway Heavenwood would certainly be something you will want to try when you can. Good Luck in your search.

If you think 5w heads look too big, then maybe something like a Titleist 818h2 19* hybrid could work. Alternately... the F9 Tour and M1/M3/M5/SIM Ti heads are smaller, and so is the Callaway SZ heads, but they are a little too deep IMO. Take a look at the F9 Tour 5-6w, any of those Taylormades (although I've found they are already kind of low spin) or the 818h2 hybrid.

I'd be be inclined to go with the 7 wood, as I would bet it would fill the yardage gap better. Higher launch, more spin, will land soft. Shorter shaft should be easier to control and make good contact. Smaller club head is slightly more versatile on imperfect fairway lies.

I don’t hit the ball real high, never had a club I could hit from distance and also clear a tree or other obstacle.

easy to launch, just wants to go straight, have a smoke 80 in it

7W or perhaps a SuperHybrid. Large hybrids blur the lines to traditional woods with slightly larger heads and moving the CG for higher launch. I personally like shorter shafts for control with hybrids and game a 19d hybrid vs a 7w. For me its a subtle difference, if someone replaced my 19dh with a nice 7w I'd game it just the same.

I'm playing a 16.5 and 21.0 degree fairways. Previously, I played a 18 degree fairway and 22 degree hybrid. Personally, I am about indifferent at the 21-22 degrees of loft range. I might be able to hit the 19 degree hybrid but I'm not sure I can get enough height out of it (probably a ~200 yard carry club for me).

Based on what you've wrote, I'd suggest the 7-wood. Maybe loft it down if need it to gap a bit better. I think there is an advantage in having a high lofted fairway and hybrid in the bag, as the hybrid is often better out of the rough, funny stance, etc (smaller head, shorter shaft).

I am going into my ninth season playing some version of 4W + 7W. These are joined by a 4H and a 4i (I only carry three wedges).

7W would give you more loft-distance separation than 5W. And - if you ever land in the rough - the 7W delivers launch + distance. In your situation, note that both 7W and 4H would launch high for you.

Most fitters push a two FW mix of 3W + 5W, or 4W + 7W.

Thanks all again for your input!

the search is on for a 7 wood. So far it’s been difficult to find a good shaped used one with a stiff shaft. Leaning towards a G400 7 wood.

In the meantime I pulled both the G410 4 wood and hybrid out and replaced them with higher launching and spinning G400s.

Decided to go 17.5 5 wood and loft it down. Prefer the smaller head of the 5 vs the 3.

Was very simple to find a G400 3 hybrid in excellent condition for very good price up here in Canada so I grabbed one in the meantime.

Might end up having to find a reg or senior G400 7 Wood and replace the shaft.

thanks again all.

be well

Once again thank you all for the wonderful insights.

Not being able to get onto a launch monitor so this is a best guess situation and decision.

Looking for more spin and launch...both G410 wood and G410 hybrid are gone

Purchased the G400 5 wood. Will turn it down to 16.5* or 17*. Might even try a 3 wood shaft as well.

Decided to go 7 wood as per your suggestions. Not easy to find at all, especially in stiff.

Was looking for a G400 7 wood but they are very rare and most are in senior shafts.

Canadian online retailer had brand new Cobra F8 fw stiff on sale. Grabbed a 5-6 and will crank it all the way up to 20*. The head is similar in size, 153 cc, to most 7 woods. Like the idea of the rails. Should ad versatility to the bag. Will have 3/4" taken off the shaft.

Hopefully the stock stiff shaft, Aldila NV 2KXV Blue 70, similar to my other sticks as I tend to get thrown off with different specs in the bag.

Much appreciated again.

Be safe and enjoy our game.
