2017 Phoenix area course conditions

Recommended Posts

My list from the last 2 weeks - based on conditions only:

Dove Valley - rain softened up the greens, compacted the bunkers and muddied up the fairways. Not terrible for the value.

Talon - excellent on all fronts; rain really softened the greens and slowed them up quite a bit. Should be back to very good this week.

Verde River - new fairways and greens not so good. Greens are very firm, but roll fine. The other fairways and greens are actually pretty good. No comments on design.

Wildfire Faldo - in great shape, enjoyed it very much. The greens were slower than normal, but good.

Wekopa both courses - excellent shape, but rain really made the bunkers even worse.

Whirlwind Devils Claw - in great shape. Was playing much harder than normal because of no roll.

Corte Bella - average everything

Lone Tree - pretty good shape, but rain and cold affected a few spots in fairways causing bad spots.

Hillcrest today.

It's been close to a year since I've played here. It's always been just ok, an enjoyable layout, budget friendly with average conditions.

Stay away, it's an absolute mess. Greens are sort of decent (tons of ball marks) but everything else is just pure trash. They ripped up the cart paths and did nothing with them, all the bunkers have been let go, some of the green side ones are playable but everything else was just garbage. Crazy wet, mud everywhere, goose turds covering most holes, the lakes are covered in algae and scum with trash in them. It's actually pretty sad, not sure what happened.

I play there about 10 years ago. Based on your post ..... Nothing has changed.

Definitely Southern Dunes...not a fan of Troon North layout wise but it's always in great shape...We Ko Pa I think Cholla is a good course, although it's not the easiest one around and definitely Grayhawk courses

Southern Dunes this morning with Fore_Life and another WRX'r actually. Great company.

Southern Dunes is my favorite track of all time but the greens were extremely disappointing today and Im not one to nit pick a course. They were super, super sandy and sand on the greens just pisses me off. Everything else was in great shape.

Best couple of courses to play regardless of money?

Wekopa Saguaro, Troon Pinnacle, Southern Dunes, Grayhawk Raptor, If you like a good layout vs scenery Camelback Ambiente is in my top 4 but it is not your typical desert layout. more of a linksish theme going on.

RE Troon North, I am not the biggest Monument fan, too may tee shots where you are forced to hit into a small area or lay up off the tee, which means no matter what tees I play I hit the same approach shots. Just not a lot of room for creativity as pretty much every shot feels forced by the designer. Shame really because the best hole on the course also happens to be one of the best driveable par 4's in town.

Pinnacle is a lot more open off the tee and has quite a few really good golf holes including one of the better short par 3's in town.

Agreed, don't know what was up with the sand on the greens at dunes. They still rolled pretty true, I just hate getting the sand all over the ball, your putter, and anything else you touch.

Played like horse poo but hard to have a bad time out there, it was a pretty beautiful day and great company

Ocotillo. Everything OK except tee boxes rarely flat, often chewed up. Never played before - not as bad as I was expecting. Certainly no destination course since it's way more Florida than Arizona. For the most part, I think it is one of those courses that chews up and spits out the high handicap golfer with the water, but really isn't that difficult for a lower cap.

Re: "Shame really because the best hole on the course also happens to be one of the best driveable par 4's in town. "

There is a short par 4 on the front nine but have to assume you are talking about 15...really fun hole.

Yep, 15 is a wonderful hole. The back 9 of Monument is actually my favorite of the 4 9s with 17 being the only truly weak hole but, unfortunately, the front 9 of Monument is by easily the worst of the 4. The first time I played Monument (in like 1996/97) the 9s were different. I'm not entirely sure Pinnacle was open at that time. 1 on Pinnacle was 10 on Monument and then 11-18 were the other back 9 holes. They made a change to the 9s in the mid 2000s to enable walking on Pinnacle which I've never done several times.

Yes 15. Love that hole even though it's the only hole I've 4 putted. Technically 3 because i putted the first one off the green. Front pin i drove the back of the green.

Still a 4 putt! I need to get out and play troon north sometime. Never got around to it when I lived there.

Dobson today with the crew, greens in good shape but slower than they have been, but probably weather related. 13 strokes better than yesterday at dunes, thanks to jzona for being the swing whisperer on the range.

Good sand, good boxes, good fairways. Only issue would be some of the thinned out wet greenside dormant Bermuda, but it's only on a few holes(same going on at Aguila in a few spots).

It was good. A little sand on the greens but I didn't think it was that bad. Overall the course was in amazing shape and though I played awful, I want to go back again soon. I'm determined to play well there lol

Walked wigwam gold in 3h 10m yesterday. Great parkland design by Rtj sr/Lehman. Veru fair. Could be tough depending on what tees you play

Fairways & tees-green a little thick

Greens-nice but probably rolling around 9.5

Bunkers-very nice

Rough-long & thick

Good routing but I thought they could use better signage as to where the next hole is

Yeah the sand wasn't too terrible. didnt seem to have a huge effect and I didn't notice the ball getting covered in sand or anything. The greens were a bit slower than last time (over New Years weekend) I was there though.

Other than that, the course was in great shape. Fairways seemed to be rolling out a bit more than before. And that was with some rain the night before we played it.

It was nice meeting and playing with you Ferris.

Best couple of courses to play regardless of money?

My top 10 golf courses in Phoenix that I could play regardless of money.

1) Troon North - Monument

2) Quintero

3) Southern Dunes

4) We Ko Pa - Saguaro

5) Troon North - Pinnacle

6) Greyhawk - Talon

7) The Boulders - South

8) Camelback - Ambiente

9) Greyhawk - Raptor

10) We Ko Pa - Cholla

Honorable mention goes to TPC Stadium (I think I would like this course more if it wasn't always on the top of the list for the most expensive courses to play)

Replace Quintero with Wickenburg Ranch, and assuming you mean Troon North Pinnacle since there is no Troon North Saguaro, and I'd agree with different ordering. And no honorable mention to TPC Stadium.
