can someone provide a primer on watch buying? I've been thinking about getting something soon but don't know enough to pony up money. I know Rolex is understood to be overpriced but that's about it

http://gearpatrol.co.../style/watches/

alot of their content on watches is for the super high priced, but they do have a few articles on getting into watch collecting, and budget watches

also this is what I'm wearing, (family heirloom passed down to me after dad's death) Omega Seamaster 200 Omegamatic

I have that same watch - it is my daily! Got it back in 2001.

Is it a watch or a mini computer?

I'm a G-Shock ABC and Olympic diving watch fan - both functional & reliable

Just got another Grand Seiko! Very underrated watch!

Like the Seiko watches, especially the divers one. I bought one second hand from a shop which turned out to be a fake (the watch, not the shop). Took it back and got a refund, they relabeled it as a copy and put it back in the window and sold it the next day !

Love that IWC! Congrats!

I've been busy:

Thanks man! That JLC is awesome! You and your Grand Seiko's is really making me want one. Definitely something I would love to have, any recommendations on a model? I saw one with a white dial and a blue second hand that I really enjoy.

So the IWC wasn't meshing with me. Much too big for my taste. Traded it in for this little guy instead.

Does anyone on here own a Shinola? They are American made and have some models I think look fantastic, but I just don't know much about them. Thanks!

I don't own one myself or know much about them mechanically but a few buddies have them and are very pleased so far.

Careful re: that "American Made" statement. The Federal Trade Commission didn't take too kindly to it.

Keep in mind that Shinola is a brand created by a private equity company after focus groups suggested that Americans would pay a significant premium for "Made in Detroit" products.

Sotheby's Declines to Sell Patek Caliber 89: Bids Fail To Reach $6.5 Million

The Caliber 89 has 33 complications, nine more than the Graves. With 24 hands, two dials, 61 bridges, 129 jewels, 184 wheels, 332 screws, 415 pinions, 429 mechanical components and 1,728 total components, the Caliber 89 it stands as the most complicated watch ever made by Patek Philippe. In addition to a tourbillon escapement, rattrapante chronograph, perpetual calendar, equation of time and an astronomical sun hand, the watch has a unique calendar that displays the date of Easter every year. It is 88.2mm wide and 41.07mm thick, and its functions are driven by three mainspring barrels.

Where's the best place to pick up a used Tag online? What about buy new with best price?

You may want to look at the new Hamilton watches. A lot cheaper than TAG and they use the same movements in their chronographs. Something to think about. Whatever you choose, do your research first and make an informed decision

I have a couple of them and love them. I bought one when the brand first launched and picked up another around the first of this year. They are some of my only quartz watches. Very comfortable. I would suggest them to anyone in the sub $800 market.

Check out Costco, my local one had a few in there for around $500...
